Teo, I think this is one of the better camera collection videos I have seen. Why? Because you showed what you can get for FREE if you ask friends and family.
Secondly, if you use your phone as a light meter there are a bazillion cameras available SO SO inexpensively.
I get that a Praktika or Mamiya/Sekor might not have the same name recognition as an AE-1 or K-1000 but so what. With the M42 lens mount there are some beautiful lenses available for cheap.
Once again great job on the content! And I always enjoy your photographs.

Great video Teo, thank you for sharing this and the personal stories you have with quite a few of these machines. That Olympus XE-3 looks like a real pleasure to use. I was wondering, what do you think about early 80's Minolta SLRs? I use an XG-M and an X-500, altering just for fun.

It surprises me that you haven't felt the urge to venture into different format films, like 120 or 110. I wonder if you would someday feel the call of a nice TRL camera. Rollei TRLs can be pricey (they're certainly not in my budget) but Yashica made some nice TRLs that would be a little easier on the budget. Even the Yashicas might be a bit much but there are decent Soviet TLRs like the Lubitel 166, which are not only affordable but smaller and cuter than other brands

and also, i find it super inspiring how you got 3 cameras from your mom, dad, and grandparents - all of which had been purchased and used a long time ago and somehow are all still working well. it really shows how durable and sustainable analog cameras are, and how much sentimental value film photography brings. i can't imagine any electronic/tech stuffs made in 21st century still working after being untouched and dusted in a corner for years lol

My first film camera was some Kodak point-and-shoot but recently I finally laid my hands on a part of my grandpa's collection and acquired Zorki-6 in imported version (now fully restored) and Kiev-4M (still broken) rangefinders. It's really amazing what deals you can get. I picked up a Nikon F3 HP for, well, let's just say "F3 money" some time ago and felt it would be unjust to leave my girlfriend with just the handful of mediocre point-and-shoots I had gifted her, so I looked for affordable SLRs on Willhaben as you did, and picked up a Cosina Hi-Lite with a perfectly good 55mm Fujinon for all of 10 euros. It was cheap because the viewfinder was infested by fungus, which took me a short 20 minutes of disassembly, cleaning and reassembly to fix, the rest was in flawless working order. I will quite plainly say, especially cameras that are held in high regard like the Nikon F series, Leica Ms and other fancy rangefinders that use the M mount etc. are just plain nicer than cameras that can be had for cheap, but unless you plan on really investing into that system with further lenses and other accessories, it's not really worth it compared to how much value you can get out of a camera significantly cheaper as long as it doesn't have a mechanical defect.

    Hi Theo,
I was hooked with your channel, because of your Praktica. Those little tanks from Dresden (my hometown) deserves more love than they get. I can recommend you my favorite M42 SLRs, the Fujica ST line, especially the 801 as the high tier manual camera. Uses available batteries, fantastic viewfinder, and a self-timer. The ST705 delivers in even a smaller package, not much larger than a Pentax MX or Olympus OM and therefore the smallest M42 body, I know so far.
keep the on with the good work and Grüße nach Österreich :)

Around the late ‘70s and early ‘80s the major camera manufacturers brought out cheaper smaller lighter SLRs with electronic shutters and auto exposure. These are cameras such as the Olympus OM10, Pentax ME Super and the Nikon FG, also the slightly larger Canon ae-1 and Minolta x300. These are all quite similar cameras but each has certain different features.. my personal favourite is the Nikon FG. Each has a different lens mount, so your choice my be influenced by the lenses that you already have. The Pentax and Minolta can both take older M42 lenses with an adapter but the Nikon cannot; I’m not sure about the other two. Adapters are available for Nikon but there is a problem with them. Due to the distance between the Nikon F mount and the film plane there is not room to fit an adapter. This means that with a simple adapter the lens will not focus to infinity, but can be used for close-ups. There are also adapters which contain a lens element. These will focus correctly, but the lens element is often of poor optical quality, and the effective focal length of the lens will be increased slightly when the adapter is fitted.

Currently owning a Olympus OM-1n and Canon AE-1 as my two only 35mm film cameras. Especially the OM-1n as my favorite camera. I’m loving it. It’s fully mechanical and only needs a battery for the light meter. The results of the photos are phenomenal. I like it more than my canon AE-1 to be honest. The small compact size, is very satisfying to travel with. Nevertheless the Canon AE-1 is also a great camera.

( Quite a bit older than you lol) I still have several film cameras some working and others passed their time. Their is something so magical about film. I know you can recreate it in digital these days, however it's not the same. I recently bought an Olympus D half frame camera which I'm dying to try. Never shot with a half frame. Film these days is not as accessible as it once was. Only a couple of places sell it where I live, otherwise it's on line ordering. Oh my, how times have changed! I remember one hour photos. Hi Theo,
I really loved your camera collection! I recently got my first one from my dad as well, it’s a FED 5B and it also got a spot in a viewfinder as your Zenith does. That spot is actually there to set the sharpness of the shot. Basically you need to focus on that spot first and make an image clear there and then set the rest of the settings. I’m sure there’s a manual online that gives a better explanation haha.

From what the repair guy told me it means that the springs inside the camera have slipped and are no longer properly aligned, which also means that the higher shutter speeds aren’t accurate
    (Regarding your mamiyas)

About Zenit - you can find a lot of spare parts for them and they’re quite easy to repair, so clearing the viewfinder or light meter window would be like a piece of cake

Weirdly enough, I was also gidted an Olympus Mju ii today. Its the Zoom 80 and I like it. I'm shooting the first roll tomorrow. My first 35mm was and is still a Praktica MTL3. I also have an LTL3. Very solid cameras

Fujica ST is also a great option if you are on tight budget. At least on Asia, that's pretty common. And since I'm a Nikoner, it's hard not to recommend the Nikkomat/Nikkormat.

Very nice camera collection! I'm also very keen on shooting with vintage cameras from the USSR (especially the Zorki models) or the GDR. Another brand I fell in love with and which I can highly recommend is Voigtländer. I own my dad's old "Bessamatic", some of the smaller "Vitomatics" and a "Vitessa T". All of them are fully mechanical cameras from the late 50s to mid 60s, they're reliable, built to last and - depending on the model - good value for money. Most of the Voigtländer lenses are amazing. I'd recommend the Color Ultron lens with the M42 mount. They can go up in price but with a bit of luck you can still get them for a bargain. I payed about 50,-€ for mine and it's worth every cent!

9:30 hello hello, i guess this mark or stain in the viewfinder could be because someone tried to increase the contrast of the viewfinder patch? i’ve heard that placing a mark, a stain or gel right in the middle could help increasing the visibility of the patch :) also great video, as always i really enjoyed the shots!!!

Enjoyed your video. I recently started using the Pentax K2 that I bought as a student in 1976, very curious how the results are. Its now possible to buy many of the beautiful lenses they made at that time, but which were then far too expensive for me. Most of them are relatively cheap and I found a couple on ebay in Japan that are as new. Besides, most of them work great with an adapter on my modern Nikon Z7.

I would like to quickly say, that the dirty spot on the Zenit is the silver mirror finish on the outside of the pentaprism starting to rust or simply crumble, seems to be a rather common thing
And with Prakticas, yeah, they are somewhat less durable than Pentax K1000, but earlier Praktica cameras tend to be more durable than 1000 and 1500 since they were made towards the years where most of the Soviet lenses and cameras suffer from quality problems
But yeah, MTL5 B is a good one, MTL 5, MTL 3, LTL 3, LTL 2. These all have a brighter viewfinder and I am particularly in love with LTL 3 because... Well, apart from being a good camera it also has silver dials. And that's pretty. I am biased, but it is still good. I have a regular LTL and it is still quite sturdy

The advantage with buying the basement price Praktica is that it takes very good photos because they are German made with German lens and generally German lenses are quite expensive so this is a way around that. The EXA is also German.

Mamiya 1000 M42 an underrated as underrated camera gets... It's M42 also... so universal mount... There are SO many lenses available.... With the prices of K1000s, AE-1s and Olympus OM-2s going all kinds of crazy, if you want a good camera that does the basic 1/1000 stuff you've stumbled onto a low cost gold mine with lens choices from Zeiss to Mamiya in the Middle and Agfa on the other side.
M42 had basically every manufacturer from A to Z. Also, you can still buy new and near new Voigtlander lenses for M42 mount. Voigtlander is the only company that is doing that now apart from Leica of manufacturing new lenses for old cameras.
The only better M42 camera is the Voigtlander Bessaflex with a 1/2000 shutter (but it doesn''t fit the price point of being cheap, or a camera set up for being set up for beginners). The Bessaflex nevertheless does have every setting you would expect from a modern, fully manual, SLR though, including a reasonably fast shutter speed, ISO control, and flash sync (with a cold shoe adapter, becoming "hot" when it's connected to the PC port) and extremely accurate internal metering. The Bessaflex is comparable in size to a Nikon FE, with all the features you'd expect on a Nikon F2.

    Hey! Love the video!
I have 3 Zenit ET bodies of which one also has weird marks in the viewfinder. It turns out that above the prism of the viewfinder most old mechanical cameras used to have a cork or similar plate on top of it, i have no clue for what reason though.
The Zenit ET uses some kind of dampening too but instead of cork it seems to be some sort of sponge or a different material which rotted away and now gunked into the viewfinder prism. This might actually be similar to your issue and as far as i know it is a bit difficult to clean as you have to remove the whole top cover to get to the viewfinder box, so you have to be cautious on which settings you remove the cover etc.
Nevertheless it doesn't actually turn into a problem shooting pictures, only if the viewfinder is completely covered haha.
