I like using 2 pumps for redundancy and ease of maintenance, but if you don't use a check valve on each and one fails, most of the flow will come out the inlet of the failed pump due to head pressure. I have also had great luck with this line of equipment.
I have been running 3 Jebao 15k pumps on my reef tanks for 5 years, no issues or failures and performance has been great with very little maintenance. They are solid!
Great to see a youtuber keeping it real in a hobby where most reefers like to show off expensive equipment rather than a tank filled with healthy corals. It wasn’t too long ago when you would be ostracised for using jebao/ jecod.
Same as other have said, brilliant pumps, especially for the money. Been running mine for over 3 years, not a single issue. One of my Jecod powerheads died recently, but with the cost of £50 it was cheap to replace.
I'm plan to try two pumps for my next build. I intend to use two separate return lines, each up and over. I like my returns up and over. It can be a pain to get them aligned straight up and down initially, but once done it's done and they look just fine. Where the return comes back down into the water I don't submerge mine. I put them just at the water level. With surface tension they make no noise nor bubbles and the siphon breaks the second you stop the pump. No valves on the lines. It's super safe and has always worked great with one pump. Seems like a perfect two pump configuration too.
Great Straightforward install of two pumps. If one likes to add monitoring, ease of failover, and ease of maintenance, you should consider adding checking valves and ball values on each pump, before connecting them. And if you want to be even more fancy you can add a flow meter after they are combined. If you are using remotely connected DC pumps and your system detects one of the pumps fails while on vacation (Via the flow monitoring), you can easily turn up the other pump when you get home for uninterrupted service (yes get pumps sized in a way you are running them each
Thanks for this video. My Vectra S1 just failed after little over 3 years. The repair cost is only 30 EUR less than new S2 with 2 years warranty...! So glad to hear these Jebao are actually maybe even better. I will still use my Vortech on battery back up at least... that's the only thing I might be missing... no back up on my return pump. But I hope the Vortech would be enough in case of power failure.
My jebao DCS 7000 is going on 5 years now. I read how people said the quality was bad and that they wouldnt, so i got 2 so i had a back up. The second one is still in the box, never been used. I clean it about once per year. Cant argue with the value for money
I have had a jecod DCT-6000 (the model before this wifi one) going for about 3 years in my backyard aquaponics in Australia. 12v solar system stepped up to 24V and fed into the control box. Turns off every night for an hour. Hasnt skipped a beat only cleaned it twice. The thing sucks snails and the occasional fish im sure because i have fish in the sump. Best pump i have ever had and i had been on a quest to find a good 12/24v DC pump for my off grid stuff for ages
Brilliant solution. Plus if they do fail, you can replace three times before equal to price the more expensive stuff. Do a whole series on reducing costs in doing a reef tank set up and maintaining in long run.
Could not agree more as I have been running mine for 5 years absolutely trouble free and so glad I did not get persuaded into buying the same thing for four times the price
Used to have a dcw return pump on a freshwater tank was cobbled into the return pipe from an fx6 when the fluval pump failed never missed a beat and was whisper quiet unlike the fluval. Did manage to snap the hose barb fitting in half though so used one of the others you get in the box to keep it going. 5 years and only failure was down to my clumsiness.

Really appreciate your honesty and willingness to talk about Jebao as a viable option. In the face of all the reef snobs with their expensive pumps etc. it’s great to see you make content like this.
AC pumps always hum, inherently, around 50-60Hz, I have tried around a dozen different Sicce, Eheim, Hydor, AquaEl, but never had any that does not hum at all. If you want to go silent, go for DC, I learned it too late. Jebao/Jecod is dead silent, especially the sine wave ones. Also if you check/tweak the fittings they can be used externally as well for example on a canister. I have a DCP 2500, makes less noise than a 250 AC pump. According to different forums, the weak link of Jebaos is the controller, it is what usually fails, not the pump, but the newer ones are reliable, so if you buy a Jebao, check when the controller is made, if it is recent, it is decent. Rule of thumb is always oversize the pump, then you can go down with the speed (and not by constricting the flow like in AC pumps) and they will last an eternity., However mine was way oversized for my nano (but could go down to 30%!) so I'm experimenting with the new TMC nano pumps (500 and a 250 for my pico), so far so good. Dead silent as well. I love how TMC gives attention to the nano things.
Can't fault my jacod wavemaker either. Nice to make saving in this hobby - more money for corals 😬😂. Brilliant channel - you have taught me loads. Thank you for sharing.
I just purchased the cor-15 from Neptune and once it figured out All the annoying programming witch is terrible by the way I’m actually enjoying this pump very much, I love that you can adjust the speed by 1% at a time and since my overflow is super finicky my return pump has to literally be PERFECTLY matched up or catastrophe happens, I just wish they didn’t make it such a pain to get set up and running
I have a positive experience with the longevity of these cheap Chinese return pumps. Sure I expect the red dragon to last longer and be even more silent but for those on a budget I really recommend these.
Keep other great, honest work and don’t sell Ecotech come knocking on your day with a sponsorship. I just subscribed today because you’re one of the only higher profile you tubers who can attest to Jebao😃

Learning the hard way sucks. I have a Vectra L2 and Ecotech doesn't care how long your tank is down. My pump lasted 11 months before having to contact Ecotech to send out a replacement. Turnaround time took 2 weeks! As I stated, they don't care and they should at that price point. Thankfully I didn't wait that amount of time before grabbing my salt mixing pump rated around 1,350 gph. I told Ecotech that I made a mistake going for a Ferrari when I should have opted for the Toyota. Having a pump that is dependable should have been my goal but I really thought Ecotech was. Fun fact .... Hygger pumps are identical to the Vectra but half the cost.
I also have this pump and have never experienced anything so quiet. You can't even feel it's on. If you couldn't see the impeller spinning you wouldn't know. Time will tell how reliable it is but haven't had a jebao product break on me yet.
Oh this is interesting! I have looked a lot into dual returns for redundancy and a lot of what I read online meant having 2 return lines or check valves as if one failed often the path of least resistance would be back down into the return chamber via the failed pump line, but with your "Y" set up when one is switched off you still get a decent return flow into the tank? Great video!
Great topic not often discussed! I use a Vectra M2 on my 100gal tank and have never actually heard it running so perhaps Ecotech made the 2nd generation quieter?
Been using their power heads for years with little issues… went with Nero 5s for the new tank…. I guess I’ll see if it was worth it 😂 when my COR 20 craps out I’ll probably go this route… plumbing it was horrible!
As a retailer I sold hundreds of Jecod/Jebao pumps, powerheads etc and in the end abandoned selling them because of the very high return rate. You do get what you pay for, generally speaking, although you can always find people that have bought expensive equipment and had it fail, and others that have bought cheap stuff and it lasted a long time. The several buckets of dead Jecod equipment I have around here doesn't speak highly of their reliability.
The check valves rattled quietly occasionally but otherwise it was fine. I ended up going back to a single, larger return in the end though (Jecod MDC6000). I got fed up of having to turn 2 pumps onto feed mode and the 2 control boxes took up quite a lot of space so looked uggers.
As a builder for decades we had "Builder Grade" and "Client Want" Builder grade would pass all codes and work perfectly fine an the cost was typically Thousands of dollars less than client wish. I will never forget a Brother and Sister I had that bought houses from me, Brother wanted Builder grade on everything but his Stove and Fridge. His house came in at $325.000.00 US..... Sister was all about the bling an name brand everything so she can tell her friends all about it, her house came it at $457,000.00 US. When they came in to finish sign the paperwork she heard what her brother paid an threw a temper tantrum befitting her High Maintenance. There is what works an what cost.... Buy what works.
I'd never buy TMC dry goods 😬 they have an awful reputation for reliablility and I had constant problems with the only kit I bought from them when I started in the hobby...
Do you have to "balance" them when running more than 2 or do the check valves avoid this? I'm just getting a new tank built (850L freshwater sump system) and the manufacturer commented that he personally wouldn't run 2 pumps as you have to balance them far more often? Great video by the way!
Not sure what balancing means? They run at the same percentage all the time if that's what you mean? But basically, I've just left them to it so far and they've been fine...
it shows it. the pipes have the silicate tubing that runs to a joint ~18in from the pump.then the join connects the two flows and it continues into the tank
@@ReefDork When you remove one pump to clean it, doesn't the other pump force water back out the opening where the other pump was connected? I would think you would need check valves above both pumps to ensure water only goes up. Great video.
So glad I seen this video. I have a 20 gallon innovative mating AIO tank now and I want to go with a bigger tank, something big enough to hold a fully grown tang (that’s a goal for me) I’ve been looking at Red Sea but they’re very expensive but I don’t know if there’s a way to get something like a Red Sea for less. I don’t mind buying the tank in pieces. I know nothing about plumbing however. Any suggestions?
Can you show how you got the Y installed to run dual returns? I don't understand how they aren't fighting each other which creates back pressure. Thanks and great video!
Lovely lovely lovely. You might just have inspired me to switch out my S1. I wasn't sure if you could plumb two pumps in to a single return outlet; are there no issues with back pressure on the pumps?
Hey idk if you'll see this but I set up my first saltwater tank around two months ago and I bought this pump mdc 5000 for my red sea reefer 350 and it send water too fast to my display tank making the return pump compartment of my sump to go dry. This means i cant run my return pump at all times which really annoys me even with my valve all the way open. Any help
I’m happy with my Abyzz pump. It may be 7 times the price but it’s 7 times the pump. Consider life support for your kid? My fish are fortunate to have me.
Great video, when you use the feed mode or turn off both pumps do you have some sort of no return valve at the top to stop the return pipe gargling and spluttering as it back feeds?
@@ReefDork Thank you, mine takes a good 30+ seconds, I have an RFG pointed down into the tank, (if I have it surface level it sprays everywhere), I think I might split my return with a Y splitter and use a fish tale on the surface and the rfg below so that it breaks suction immediately.
I can't see why it wouldn't work with different flow rates as long as one isn't MUCH higher than the other. Brands shouldn't matter either - as long as they both have the same size outlet, it should be easy.
@@ReefDork amazing thank you, I’ve got 1x TMC 12,000 as well as 1x TMC 10,000. Was hoping to use these on setting up my new 6ft, have them on spend 40% power each. (Depending on what the end flow equals.)
Thanks for your answers. I believe you also said that Jebao is more quiet compare to Vectra S2? Is that correct? I am thinking about Jebao DCP 5000 or Jebao MDC 6000 WIFI. My LFS said the WIFI does not work for like 50% EU customers. Which one would you recomend? Mainly for being quiet? I got 350 liter tank Thank you
I had the M1, not the S2. The WiFi doesn't work on my MDC either but it's quieter than any Jecod pump I've had before so I'd personally still go for that...
@@ReefDork Ok, yeah I think I will go for it. Hopefully it is better than those Jebao pumps like 4 years ago... I did not like those... sounded like having a hoover 🙉😁 Thanks for your time 😉
If you want a pump to last get a AC pump like iwaki or panworld. Built like tanks run 10+ years zero maintenance. I have them 20 years. DC pumps all the range but they are built like plastic toys in comparison and they have no head no power. Any sort of head will take the flow from 400 gph to 20 gph. 3 return pumps in 3 years means you are buying junk.
Hi dud you have any issues connecting with the app. I was trying to set it up for 5 hours. Still no luck. In n how thinking about send it back to fastlight.
Yeah, tried and failed a few times and gave up in the end. They're still better than my non WiFi Jecods so I'm happy with them. I've seen others with this issue so fast light might be able to help you fix it.
I’m thinking of getting a Jebao return pump. What is the difference between the MDC and MDP? Is the MDP the newest generation? Also if I were to go with the 3500 what is the lowest flow it does?
Youve cost me more money today 🤣 what size is your tank? Ive got a waterbox 110.4 and ordered an 8000. Just wandering if i should have gone for the 6000 or even the 5000. Whats your thoughts?
@@ReefDork it would mean running at 36% where the 6000 will be running at 44% and using less electricity. So thats whats drawing me to swapping. Taking into account head pressure loss sand rocks etc ill have a tank turn over of approx 6 times at 44%
@@ReefDork I really like how they are setup to work with battery backups. And the quality and customer service from ecotech is unmatched. But foe the price you can always have several jebao pumps on hand. And the jebao wave pumps are much better value. If ecotech ever made some standard wave pumps for less money that would be great.

Great video 👍 I have the 10000lph one and it's been great. Very quiet. Need to do a 6 month review on mine soon to be honest. You can adjust the feed timer in the app as well so if you need for instance 25 mins or longer for a water change then you can do it. Doesn't have to be 10 mins 😁
Hi, new to reefing, if I have a 115 gallon tank, how do I know what size pump I need? And then if I want to do 2 like you do here, do I just get 2 that are 50% the size I need?

@@ReefDork thanks pal. I picked up the newer mdp which i think is the same pump just different controller. Can you hear a slight whiring noise from yours or is it literally silent silent?

I I’ll have a refugium and an oversized protein skimmer. Can you please tell me what will be the best third tang for the 120 gallon tank? I will have an oversized refugium and protein skimmer and also feed heavily in the tank. Thanks! Please let me know.
The shops that all LFS stores hate 😁. Ask any LFS and they are guaranteed to have a horror story about Jebao, to make sure that you buy a non eBay pump.About a third of the price of an equivalent Vectra. Will they Jebaos fail? Absolutely with time but in my opinion no more than other brand names pumps
@@ReefDork when you take one out to clean and leave the other one on do you have to double the speed so that the weir does not go mad with a different water level/flow rate? I can kinda see this being more of a hassle than just turning it off for 10 mins to clean?

We’ve had several fail on three different systems. Don’t know why the boss keeps buying them other than the price.
Thanks for this input, what was the moat common fault, do you remember?
Hi great idea, I am thinking about doing this for my new xl 425. How did you get on with them in the long run?
The check valves rattled quietly occasionally but otherwise it was fine. I ended up going back to a single, larger return in the end though (Jecod MDC6000). I got fed up of having to turn 2 pumps onto feed mode and the 2 control boxes took up quite a lot of space so looked uggers.
I just ordered a Jebao return pump for my Biocube 29. I'm hoping it's quieter than the pump I have now.
Nice analogy 👍
Great video thanks, what’s your opinion on the TMC reef pumps
Be cool to see how you plumbed them in tandem👍🏻😳
it shows it. the pipes have the silicate tubing that runs to a joint ~18in from the pump.then the join connects the two flows and it continues into the tank
2:48
That's it. Join the two silicone tubes to a y piece, then connect the y to the tank's plumbing as usual
@@ReefDork When you remove one pump to clean it, doesn't the other pump force water back out the opening where the other pump was connected? I would think you would need check valves above both pumps to ensure water only goes up. Great video.
I use a jabao ACQ ITS A 240V 10 speed speed controlable only cost 60 quid fantastic
So glad I seen this video. I have a 20 gallon innovative mating AIO tank now and I want to go with a bigger tank, something big enough to hold a fully grown tang (that’s a goal for me)
I’ve been looking at Red Sea but they’re very expensive but I don’t know if there’s a way to get something like a Red Sea for less. I don’t mind buying the tank in pieces. I know nothing about plumbing however. Any suggestions?
Go 2nd hand - plenty of bargains to be had
Can you show how you got the Y installed to run dual returns? I don't understand how they aren't fighting each other which creates back pressure. Thanks and great video!
The y piece just points straight up so the flow moves naturally - doesn't seem to be any back pressure.
@@ReefDork is there a place you recommend to buy this part?
Just ordered the mdc 5000's they look so small on your videos mate, look absolutely massive in real life haha
Hope you like them. And that's useful to know - i'll show something in future videos so you can compare the size 🙂
I always put a silicone mat under my return pump stops any vibration noises
Great video you just confirm my purchase :) lol.
I’m interested in what size piping is on your overflow line/lines
there wave maker ow25 in my 35 nano runs awesome
Lovely lovely lovely. You might just have inspired me to switch out my S1. I wasn't sure if you could plumb two pumps in to a single return outlet; are there no issues with back pressure on the pumps?
Nope, no issues as far as I can see...
Will it hold memory if its unplug for long time ? thx you
Quality info as always 👌
Great video, when you use the feed mode or turn off both pumps do you have some sort of no return valve at the top to stop the return pipe gargling and spluttering as it back feeds?
No, it just makes a gargling noise for a few seconds, then stops. All perfectly normal, no problem with it.
I use the tmc 2000 return and comes with a controller
By the way, when you press the pause/feed mode, does it still push some water so the sump does not get overflooded? Same feature as Vectra?
Thank you
Nope, it turns them off for 10 minutes.
Are these quieter compared to AI Axis pumps?
Really hard to say without doing a side by side comparison but they're both very quiet if run below 50%
I run 2 pumps one goes to return and one goes to chiller
Should both return pumps the symmetrical and I pump the same amount or is it okay to have two separate brand/power?
I got 350 liter tank
Thank you
I had the M1, not the S2. The WiFi doesn't work on my MDC either but it's quieter than any Jecod pump I've had before so I'd personally still go for that...
@@ReefDork Ok, yeah I think I will go for it. Hopefully it is better than those Jebao pumps like 4 years ago... I did not like those... sounded like having a hoover 🙉😁
Thanks for your time 😉
So if one fails and the other keeps going and no check valves on either will it syphon back into the sump?
Yeah, at the moment if one fails the other will just push water to the sump. I need to fit check valves to fix that
If you want a pump to last get a AC pump like iwaki or panworld.
It is designed for closed loop because due to the wave function
Don't think there's a wave function...
bought something like 5 DCWs in a row, all fail to maintain continuous flow rate. Tried one DCP, same.
Haven't seen the mdp. Lowest is 30%
what are your tank dimension? looks great
It's 24x24x50 inches. Red Sea Reefer Peninsula 500 👍
Youve cost me more money today 🤣 what size is your tank? Ive got a waterbox 110.4 and ordered an 8000. Just wandering if i should have gone for the 6000 or even the 5000. Whats your thoughts?
The 8K will be fine - just turn it down a bit 🙂
@@ReefDork it would mean running at 36% where the 6000 will be running at 44% and using less electricity. So thats whats drawing me to swapping. Taking into account head pressure loss sand rocks etc ill have a tank turn over of approx 6 times at 44%
I still think vectra are worth the extra money, but the cheap units are great for a backup or second pump.
I was REALLY close to getting an M2. Good pumps, no doubt.
Does this pump have any metal parts eg screws nuts my dcp6500 has started to rust after a year looking for something not to expensive that's all plastic
Nothing externally, no - it's all plastic
Friendly @ReefDork any chance you could do a video on "Best Chenobyl thing for tank"
I ❤️ that neon look 🤜
Might be able to one day, yeah. In the meantime... Softy - Green star polyps. Utter Chaos zoas too. Lps - war coral is bright, as are green scolys. And torches. Sps - can't beat Seriatopora caliendrum for glow!
@@ReefDork Legend!! thanks mate, have a great weekend!
Do you ever need to use the wifi function? Could you please comment on the wifi and the app? Thanks for the great review.
I can't connect at the moment - had the same issue with my Sicce so i'm probably doing something wrong. Although I never used the app for my Vectra so probs won't use this either...
That's cool - I need to check out the app still...
@@ReefDork well you can always watch my video on it ! Lol.
@@ReefDrama watched it last week 🙂
@@ReefDork awesome 👌 thankyou. Hope you found it helpful.
I just bought a CDC sicce7.0 should I be worried
See how it goes - I might just have had a loud one
Hi, new to reefing, if I have a 115 gallon tank, how do I know what size pump I need? And then if I want to do 2 like you do here, do I just get 2 that are 50% the size I need?
My main tank is roughly that size - I have 2x 5,000 lph pumps that I run at around 50%.
@@ReefDork thanks. Do you know if a good place to buy hard plumbing from?

i just finished to rewatch your video on test and salt . and for you which salt is the best red sea or tropic marine ?
your opinion counts for me Thank you .
I use Red Sea blue bucket because it closely matches the parameters I aim for. Both good salts...
Anyone can please share the MDC pumps measures? Thanks!
How are you still finding this pump mate. My 4 month old vectra s2 is so up and down never constant lately. Need a more reliable and consistent pump
Love it - I have 6 return pumps between my 2 tanks for various reasons. They're all Jecods and the MDCs are the quietest.
@@ReefDork thanks pal. I picked up the newer mdp which i think is the same pump just different controller. Can you hear a slight whiring noise from yours or is it literally silent silent?
That will be my cheapest upgrade(or should i vall ot downgrade?) ever.
Can I ask where you got your silicone tubing from?
Amazon - i've put a link in the description.
@@ReefDork fantastic, thank you
I just ordered 2 of the none Wi-Fi version where I live 5 Ghz is only available so the app would be useless for me plus I saved a few bucks.
Hey here, I am planning on setting up a 120 gallon mixed reef tank. I want to add two tangs, a purple and tomini tang. I really want a tang trio tho. I I’ll have a refugium and an oversized protein skimmer. Can you please tell me what will be the best third tang for the 120 gallon tank? I will have an oversized refugium and protein skimmer and also feed heavily in the tank. Thanks! Please let me know.
Maybe a kole tang would be good - they don't need big tanks.
@@ReefDork okie thanks!
Best pumps running for 4 year getting upgraded when new comes and yes completely silent.
I run a 8000 thats hard lined completely silent
The shops that all LFS stores hate 😁. Ask any LFS and they are guaranteed to have a horror story about Jebao, to make sure that you buy a non eBay pump.About a third of the price of an equivalent Vectra. Will they Jebaos fail? Absolutely with time but in my opinion no more than other brand names pumps
What’s the App like to control them?
Can't get it to connect to my wifi at the moment! Had the same problem with my Sicce so it's probably something i'm doing wrong...
@@ReefDork when you take one out to clean and leave the other one on do you have to double the speed so that the weir does not go mad with a different water level/flow rate? I can kinda see this being more of a hassle than just turning it off for 10 mins to clean?
@@marbles351 exactly right. I prefer to soak pumps to get them spotless so it'll take a few hours for me to do it
@@ReefDork would be a good video to show how you have done it all……😀
Good informative video, but just one ☝️ observation, you better pray to God Mrs Dork doesn’t find out how much money 💴 you’ve spent (wasted) on return pumps. 😂😂🏴
