Fished Catalina on the Pescador out of 22nd St. Landing with a great group of fisherman. The yellows made a showing but not in the force that they've been lately. We landed 8 for the boat. I didn't get one. The calicos were on the chew and that made up for it.

Peter Torres Maybe down the line for sure. At the basic level use the 200 series for bait and 300 series for jigs. Upgrade to better drags. Should be good to go. 👍

Just goto San Diego my friend. Any boat.. just get on the one that has an opening for you. Best quality of fish is down there.

Hi, just wanted to ask you how is the casting on the new tern 500, i have one myself got it last week. I noticed the control knob kinda weird to me.
Rocky Elefane It was fine. The gears were clunky at first because of the stainless steel parts. But that didn’t affect the casting. What was weird about the tension knob?

Yeah you’re right about that, i did free spool it and and crack it making so much weird noise, knob casting control is the one that bothers me LOL. U can only do one full turn and I don’t see any change on the brake system to kinda slow down when you’re casting.
I just tried casting it 30 minutes ago, what I did is removed the knob put portion of paper, inside and boom it worked, the break works okay now😅

Would the tern 400 be a good 40lb reel to throw irons?
steve gonzalez You can definitely use it for that. Especially with a lighter rod. 👍
Jigslinger I have a okuma 801xh I was thinking of pairing it with. I have never used that rod either. Hope they pair up good for irons
steve gonzalez I’ve pulled on those Okuma pch series before. They’d be great for colt snipers type jigs paired with that Tern 400. You can use it for surface iron but it wouldn’t be ideal. Just my opinion tho.
What size is your Tern and how does it compare to a TranX500 ?
bob vangrin I was using the 500 for surface iron. Tough to compare an open face reel with a level wind. I prefer open face reels for surface iron but you can’t go wrong with either one. 👍

MishaFlyers 26 Highly recommend you do so. You can either use the fishing tape from any fishing tackle shop. Or use the medical stuff I use from CVS.

What Month do dorados usually start getting caught? They're my favorite fish, never been salt water sport fishing though. Just went on my first 1/2 day on wednesday!
All throughout summer but nowhere near catalina island you gotta go far down south if you want any chance of catching one
TheCaliforniaConservative They usually start showing up around mid August on normal years. You’ll start seeing them on offshore trips. They hang around kelp paddies. 👍

What's the rating on the Phenix black diamond and what was the weight of the hookup bait?
Rock in roll chill Rod is rated 15-40. Hookup bait is the 1.5oz.

Anotherflores91 I think 1.5oz is its sweet spot. 2oz is about the max on it.
