In the show LOST, the actor that plays the insurance guy here, is one of the villains within 'The Others'. It's definitely understandable that he could go from hippy on the mainland, to joining the Dharma Initiative on The Island, and then descend into violence as one of "the hostiles"
OMG. I've watched Mad Men from start to finish twice, and rewatched this scene many times. It never hit me that Roger was admitting to a suicide attempt before. I'm sure LSD was involved, but it makes way more sense that he was actually considering ending his life than it does to think he was just high off his gourd and Randall was like, "maybe don't have your acid trip on the ledge of the roof, man." Really adds some depth to Roger's character, and it is totally like him to just casually admit to it under the radar. Unless everyone picked up on this before except me.
Notice right as the trippy guy is leaving, Don actually gives him a look of serious appraisal - he’s nuts, but to Don he’s also a sort of leading indicator of how the whole culture is changing as the 60s start to become “The Sixties”, which as an ad man he needs to get on top of, quickly.
Sterling had a ridiculous amount of great throwaway lines in that show. "RANDY, it never works!" "You're allowing the emotions of the day and...whatever else you got in your system, to influence your judgement." (After the Tecumseh quote), "...I'd forgotten that." "He talked me off a roof once, I kinda owed him." "Make sure Randy doesn't get lost."
How did I let this scene slip through the cracks? Lmao. But funniest scene to me is when Don and Sal are in a plane examining a magazine article where Don is holding a huge bottle of alcohol and before the dialogue, Don remarks “That’s not a bottle. That’s his date.” Sal: “My my what a big bottle you have!” Don: “I’m sorry, honey. I’m taken. I just pawned my typewriter so we could spend the weekend together.”
When someone has the most BS crappy idea at your company go ahead and listen to them fully out. The reason being even if their idea has no glimmer of hope of chance of being used you can always see a derivative idea/spin off of that idea. Janeway and Blena Torres on star trek voyager do it all the time and happens in real life as well. So sometimes crappy ideas do give birth to great ideas. So it is better than no idea.
