Damn Lane was a great character and this was the most memorable scene he had, his death was tragic Don was wrong for firing him but he died after kissing joan and kicking Pete's ass.
He only embezzled money to pay back taxes from liquidating his holdings to help start the new agency. So after putting in 50,000 he took 13,000 for taxes and lost his job and his share of the new agency
Travis Rogers It's still a crime. If what he did wasn't wrong, why didn't he get the ok from the other partners first? Because he knows he never would have got it. I get your point but that doesn't make it right. It sure as hell wouldn't if my partner did that to me.
Lane was very foolish to steal that money. What was the big rush to pay those back taxes?? The worst that would have happened had he waited until he had the money is that he would have had to pay some interest. Or, if he had simply approached Don in confidence, Don would have lent him the money without hesitation. That being said, Don showed unimaginable cruelty in firing him out of hand, even after Lane's explanation. And by the way, that is TWICE that Don has to see someone close to him hang themselves because he was unable to show them kindness. You can see that realization on Don's face when they discover Lane's body in his office. What a television program.
I think he expected Lane to be more stable than his brother. It was a sad scene. Not everyone can take Don's lack of sympathy. Peggy was one that heeded his advice when he told her to forget about the child and move on with her life. While she did not and could not forget the child entirely, she had a very successful career. She learned this another time when Don told her he pays her so he never has to say "thank you".
Its a silly feminist show though, because they want to rewrite history and demonstrate toxic childish masculinity and female oppression, which is central to the story. Remember, a man like him would have been raised his entire life to be a gentleman, literally a man who doesn't brawl like lower class bar drunkards, so to resort to "fisticuffs" in an office environment would have been lowering himself and completely uncalled for. Likewise, men were highly protective of women at this time, even if infantilizing them, and would never have permitted the open abuse that the women suffer. The goal is to produce more third wave feminists, and show them how horrific life as a housewife was, and how enlightened they are for working long hours and coming home to an empty house with cats.
The Pete Campbell character should be beat up regularly, and seeing Mr. Pryce do it was a delight! Both would be fired today for such antics, but I still enjoyed the scene.
