It's very hard not to give Emezi all the stars.

I’ve only given three books 5 stars so far and they weren’t books that blew me away. Some of these books are on my TBR so maybe there’s hope to add to my five star reads. And Then She Fell, I Who Have Never Known Men and As Long As The Lemon Tree Grows are high up on my list. 😊💙

Woohoo! You read My Brilliant Friend before it was listed as the top book of the last 20 years by the New York Times!!! I went to an event the other night at my bookstore, and the author speaking described the Neapolitan Quartet as the greatest example of character development ever written. Which I thought was a bold claim! But it IS great.

Welcome to Booktube, thank you for saying hi. I subscribed to your channel and watched a video of yours when I saw the comment, but had to duck out of the house, so never said hello, welcome and you make great videos.

I loved Loop Tracks. Interestingly, Sue Orr is the wife of the Governor of the Reserve Bank here in New Zealand.

I need more reading time to fit in all of these I haven't yet read. I was so keen to read And Then She Fell for one and didn't get to it. And had forgotten about Anita de Monte Laughs Last altogether until watching this. Boysie Singh came up from the library unexpectedly last week so I have to squeeze that in between Jane Austen July and BookTube Prize reading.
Glad you reached Ferrante. And I did get Ordinary Human Failings in June. Carmel sticks with you, doesn't she?
    Thanks for the earworm 😅

At last a video by you that didn't blow up my TBR - but oniy because Ive already read all bar one. You convinced me that I did, in fact, want to read anotner WWII so I have added Safekeep. Loved seeing a couple of NZ books on your list.

Wow as always you have significantly affected my tbr list but tysm for your input on James which is a book i struggled with (i felt its cynical tone and comically bad villains incongruous with the story) and im very very grateful to you and your presence on booktube ❤

Love The Book of night Women!!!! Definitely one of my favourites. Love the Neapolitan quartet and it just gets better and better with each book. A Trace of Sun is very good and I'm disappointed that it wasn't talked about more. Whew! Boys Singh! Have been listening to the audio and reading the physical simultaneously. I'm in the middle of reading it now. So damn good! Annie Bot and As Long as the Lemon Tree Grows are both on my TBR along with James of course.

Yay! Sounds like Cantoras might speak to me a fair bit. I’ve had an e-copy of it for years.
So many (all of them) I’ve already read and loved as much as you did, or want desperately to read. I’d read anything on your recommendation. Great video, Friend.

The Safekeep was a miss for me. Overwrought and by around halfway, I began skimming to the end. An intriguing premise, but the execution was lacking.

So many great books - I've read and loved a few of the ones you've mentioned and the rest went straight on my TBR list! I Who Have Never Known Men DESTROYED me (in a good way) and is one of my favourite books of all time.
Unfortunately, James ended up being the biggest disappointment of my reading year so far. The way marginalised groups reclaim their agency and narrative is constantly evolving and it seems Mr Everett hasn't been keeping up with the discourse here, making some quite outdated and harmful choices regarding language and education (partially for comedic effect, partially I'd say because of generational disconnect). I do believe his intentions were genuine, but he should have been advised by younger Black advocates.
On a more positive note, I've just finished reading my favourite book of the year so far - Mongrel by Hanako Footman.

  • @TheLeniverse

I've read six of these, and four of them were five star reads for me. (And Then She Fell, Ordinary Human Failings, Greta & Valdin, James) Eight more are on my tbr (well, it was seven but I have now added As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow), and I'm now even more excited about them. Sadly we diverge on Boy Parts. That one really didn't work for me, but after listening to you talk about it I wonder if it was because I listened to the audio. It's read by the author, but she manages to make her main character so utterly unlikable. And not unlikable in a way that I enjoy. I wonder if I would have had a more nuanced view of her if I didn't have the text filtered through the audio performance. Maybe I'll try it again once enough time has passed.
