One very important aspect of any location for a business is the local and state political climate toward your industry and business. If you find unnecessary political difficulty in opening your business or obtaining permits, identify other options and research the satisfaction of other business owners regarding the responsiveness of local politicians. I'd recommend considering going door to door, meet the neighbors. Often, you'll find in instances like this, you'll need to spend quite a bit on legal fees and other costs, not associated with the business over time. Information is never perfect, but not all business environments are the same. Unless you have deep pockets, consider other locals. Just a friendly, and neighborly recommendation from a California CPA.
How about making California more business friendly. Hell how about being more tax friendly especially on people making less than 160k a year. Or their insane property taxes.
come on, the rules and process is known for decades, put $1000 cash in an envelope and bring it with you along with your application and hand it to the counselor (^NOT the clerk), simple and hassle free, same goes with the planning inspector
Let's put this way it was never theirs to begin with. What was built there they were not people that built out mission. So what, times is changing y'all just need to move with it. This isn't first time the mission districts culture and ethnicity have changed.
The permitting issues are due to NIMBYs, across the board. Oakland minority and LGBTQ+ locations have faced permitting issues too. It’s even worse when neighborhood districts take advantage of prospective (same causes, like Mexican) small businesses too.
What blows my mind is that there is actually a narrative that swears up and down that no Democrats de-funded the Police, it's all a FauxNews lie.....😂....🤡🌎
I recount a news article about the Mission neighborhood groups NIMBY a ice cream shop, dragging it out for years while the prospect shop owner was paying rent on the space that he cannot occupied/open for business as te process dragged.
This is another prime reason why the City can't advance.... too much unnecessary red tape. They don't want box stores and they don't want small business owners to succeed. How can a small business owner pay all of the permit fees and pay for months of rent when they can't even move into their business. Its outrageous how special interest groups tell small business owners what and what they can't do, ie what kind of art to sell, what kind of food to serve. There is something for everyone, if you don't like the menu, go somewhere else. Its like telling an Italian restaurant thatthey have to serve Chinese fare for the Chinese patrons. Duh!
the regulations, permits & fees that are placed on small business owners is ridiculous. all of it put into place without taking ANY consideration to the operational capabilities of the business. I've had an experience where the health department wouldn't approve my plans until I put a $3,000 air-curtain on double doors that were inside of a building(didn't lead outside). when the health inspector came for final inspection she told she didn't care if I had an air-curtain there or not because it wasn't necessary. $3,000 out the door because of the incompetence running the city. For any future business owners.. DO NOT COME TO CALIFORNIA. With the regulations, fees, rent, woke practices, inflation there are no profit margins.
This gives HOA energy--maybe it's all about control. As a resident of lower mission, I think all of these so-called community 'protection' efforts are excessive and misguided. The area could actually use some change; some fresh blood. Not every new retail or restaurant concept is gentrification.
The community organizer who insists that people who don't share his ethnicity or culture must "integrate" themselves into his ways - what he is actually doing is practicing fascism.

San Francisco is a city of anarcho-tyranny. Very strange how they manage to have anarchy and tyranny at the same time. What if the businesses and developers didn't follow rules like looters and drug dealers in SF?
incredibly stupid journalism to conflate "refugee opening business in vacant space" with "residential landlords evicting people," and that does not think to ask the question, "how many votes can this Arguello rando whip up in the BoS election that lets him wield this kind of power in the neighborhood?" If thousands of people trust him to tell them who to vote for, and that means the Mission supervisor has to listen to him, so be it, but... does he have that kind of juice?
Any business not maximizing profits is not a business. History doesn’t entitle residents to continue taking up space that more profitable consumers could be occupying. Resist it all you want but don’t blame the businesses when the place turns into a slum.
