      I'm a general contractor in the bay. You have to remember the service people already moved decades ago and commute an hour to two hours one way into sf to work everyday

There are work stations, shared living space, private meeting room, individual climate control, internet and utilities included, a shared kitchen, laundry restrooms and shower and even a weekly cleaning service for the communal areas.

Perhaps they do not want to comply with the house rules a family household would have. The area is not zoned for high density residential.       Downtown SF pricing has always been top dollar. If people are OK in roommate style living, have an AI tech job nearby, 700 bucks is cheap. Make your month's rent in a few days and save up the rest of your check. Don't have to spend money and time to commute. I'm not 20 anymore so it ain't for me but for some, it can make all the difference in their lives.

It isn’t a homeless shelter dormitory, and I’m not sure the negative effect this has on the area should be permitted just because techies feel like living on a shoestring. Some people would like to run a power cord from their neighbor’s place to their own, and empty their wastewater into the street so they don’t have to pay sewer fees, but it’s not allowed.

      US businesses, actually most, don't care about quality or happy customers or the foreseeable future. We live in a, "I WANT IT NOW!!" Impatience isn't valuable to anyone.

    Only a cheap looking shower curtain for privacy, SAFETY and nowhere to put clothes, computers, etc. ?
    They also look like they get no ventilation. I felt like my oxygen level dropped to 50%.
    All those "pods" with a small living area and an even smaller kitchen. TOO CROWDED + STRANGERS = A POSSIBLE REALITY SHOW that know one wants.
    I bet they didn't have a proof of concept model. As in having people try them out for a several months for FREE! Proof is no participants were interviewed.

    what a nightmare I'd rather work retail, live quietly in a small town in other states & have a private studio apartment for $700. This is not worth a start-up. You can start up from any where.     I've got nothing against giving people living in an expensive city a more affordable place to sleep, but this is insane, akin to people in Tokyo living in Internet cafes. If your city doesn't pay enough to let you sleep in an actual apartment, room or house, the solution is not to cram everyone into a shelf like they do in Hong Kong - it's to pay people more or make existing living spaces more affordable.

    $700 divided by $30 is $23 a night. This is a fabulous price for hotels. Hostels - note the added "s", y'all from I Dunno Land - charge more than this in the Bay Area. Who would live in these all the time? Students. Who would live in these part time? Tourists. Whichever, if this makes you panic, don't move to an important city packed onto a tiny peninsula.

      If only houses cost 100,000. That kind of money gets you the materials and perhaps the labor. Where does the land come from? $80,000 gets you a parking spot. $200,000 gets you a build able lot on the outskirts of town. $340,000 gets you a dump. $450.000 gets you a house. $550,000 gets you a nice house.

    I got my 1st apartment in 2003 which was a 1 room efficiency with a tiny kitchenette and regular sized bathroom and a walk-in closet. I paid $300 a month with ALL utilities included. I used the closet as a small makeshift bedroom.
    That same apartment is now $750 with little upgrades and the neighborhood has gotten significantly worse since 2003.
    I can't believe that the rent has more than doubled in 21 years.
    This rental market isn't sustainable.

    Makes me feel slightly sorry for them when I have a 2100 sf home on 10 acres with a view all the way across the Sacramento valley that's only costing me $400 per month more than that. And that's not including the fact that I don't have to worry about getting stabbed or walk in the sidewalk deposits from the homeless people.

    I would accept this as a backpacker temporarily staying at a hostel. This living situation gets old real quick.
    As others have mentioned, it might be better living in another city if this is your only option. The surrounding area is probably not pleasant either, filled with addicts and homeless.
