Civil and Constitutional Rights of Convicted Felons
      NCJ Number 103775
      Author(s)
      N Pease
      Date Published 1984
      Length 58 pages
      Annotation
This memorandum reviews State laws denying convicted felons their constitutional or civil rights and discusses whether Alaska could pass a constitutional amendment denying convicted felons such rights.
      Abstract
Most jurisdictions deny convicted criminals specific rights rather than all civil and constitutional rights. The rights most often curtailed include the right to vote and hold public office, employment rights, domestic rights, and financial and contractual rights. State statutes and local ordinances are the traditional means for abridging the rights of convicted criminals.

I grew up in East-Germany, lived there my first 23 years. And I can support every word Timothy Snyder is saying here! Especially "obey in advance" with is a social-psychological cancer for a society. So keep your heads up over there. One day there will be light after darkness. And remember Shakespeares Othello "Men at some time are masters of their fates: The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, But in ourselves, that we are underlings. "

Hi Ali - as a fellow Canadian, perhaps I might make a polite observation about US culture here. In my view Americans tend to put an inordinate value on winners and losers (you know, the old Vince Lombardi philosophy that winning is everything. Though I think later in life he revised his opinion on this) - so, all of a sudden the Republican's are revered for their brilliant electoral strategy and the knives come out for who is to blame within the Democratic Party for the loss.
As Tom Nichol's suggests in the Atlantic that this misses the point. It was never really a fair fight. Fox and the right wing conservative echo chamber - not to mention hostile foreign actors have - over a long period, indoctrinated or inoculated many Americans with toxic extremism and lies. This control of the media, not to mention that by and large; Democrats tend to want to play fair (what were traditional American values - they've not contested the election, nor will they hamper the legitimate transfer of power) has been the reason that Harris lost the election. Looking at what Democrats did or didn't do is a moot point - they ran a great and inspiring campaign but they were going up against a toxic electorate that has been polluted by a Republican bodyguard of lies.
Let's say you are a business manager and you are looking to hire a suitable candidate for a job (it could be any job). Watch the live feed of the Presidential debate on September 10th and any snippets from the last two weeks of the campaign and then tell me which of the two candidates you would hire for your business - or even which of the two candidates you would let your kids just listen to on TV. The propensity for one side to embrace lies and conspiracy theories (yes I know both sides lie to some degree - but the shear weight of lies on one side and the strategy of not ever admitting you were wrong when called out) - and the inability of a large majority of the electorate to discern the difference hamstrung the Harris campaign. Trump is the personification of the problem but it is one that is way more insidious. As Mr. Snyder says time to work together and build our own version Solidarność.
    Hang in there everyone!

Your comment is spot on and it is the core reason for all of this. It is the image that was created versus the reality. People, even, in addition, completely abandoned their common sense. There were so many things that taken out of the environment and looked at individually were completely and utterly absurd, that in any other context, common sense would immediately reject. And it's also the as you mentioned, The winner versus losers mentality kind of like you know football. But this isn't the football game. It's real life. But the media here has acquiesced for the most part to right-wing misinformation. Heather Cox Richardson also has a really good take on this. And all this other stuff is just noise. Trying to figure out what happened and all of that what happened was, full stop, a mirage created by right-wing misinformation and propaganda machine from foreign sources, combined with an electorate that is politically and historically illiterate.

    • @8__vv__8

We could argue until 2100 about who is responsible for what, but ultimately, the status quo that Dems have been trying to cling on to sucks for almost everyone in this country. Poisoning the information space has sped things up, and pointed us in a troubling direction, but the average American was already desperate for change.

    • @ChrisHudson-x3y
      @ChrisHudson-x3y หลายเดือนก่อน

@@lesliecurran1704 Thanks so much for your lengthy comment. You're right, it sure isn't a football game! Totally agree that the media has acquiesced to the right wing. Moreover I am concerned that the Democrats will fall into a lot of handwringing about what they did wrong rather than keeping their eyes front - Trump is dangerous and he will start doing dangerous things. That's, in my mind anyway, the real emergency that needs to be faced. Jon Stewart had a really interesting conversation with Heather Cox Richardson earlier this week. You're right, she has a very clear and articulate take on all of this. The insights of Tim Snyder and Heather as well as many others are going to be vital as we face this test.

Born in the 1940s i was always strongly influenced by American culture, Music, Movies, literature History of the wild West, the Indian genocide & black slavery & civil war.
I served in the Vietnam war & personally found the vast majority of American personnel easy to get along with & helpful.
I'm devastated by the reality of a 2nd Trump Term, an extreme ultra right group (many Convicted Criminals & Felons)
      International
Intelligence security & Military agencies are all going to be compelled to insulate sensitive information from the Americans now.
This Administration is hostile to the free world & very cozy with the likes of authoritarian govts.
I doubt after another 4 years of Trump, it will EVER be salvaged?
Lack of social equality, the exploitation of the poor
The failure in distrubution of wealth & appalling misgivings in the educational system, media & finally the breakdown of the seperation of powers are underlying failures..
The USA enters a phase of possible total chaos & disintegration.

    OBITUARY NOTICE
My dear and precious Uncle Sam passed away from a long-term illness resembling cancer on November 5th, 2024. His close associate, American democracy, was with him at the time of his passing and sadly, died of shock immediately after the passing of Uncle Sam. Expectedly, many are praising the passing of my controversial uncle and his close friend, democracy, because they stood up for truth, justice, dignity and liberty, and those qualities are clearly out of date and out of step with the America of today. Comments of relief and joy are flowing in from around the world from dictators and tyrants such as Putin of Russia and Viktor Oraban of Hungary, and Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela. All democratic nations have expressed great sadness and fear over how the death of Uncle Sam and democracy will erode the democracies within their own nations. Flowers may be sent to the US Capitol building in Washington DC where a memorial service will be held on January 20, 2025 conducted by Donald J Trump.

Probably confident that somehow somewhere SOMEONE ELSE would take him down .. and here we are .. the soul of America has been sold to the highest bidder and I think we all know who that is.

I have checked out almost every single book published on politics these last 8 years. Timothy Snyder's books are among the few I found well worth my time. I even took notes from On Tyranny and emailed the key points to myself.
To abandon facts is to abandon freedom.
You submit to tyranny when you renounce the difference between what you want to hear and what is actually the case.
Klemperer said truth dies in 4 modes:
    1. open hostility to verifiable reality
    2. endless repetition
    3. magical thinking - openly embracing contradiction, ex. Trump promising to cut taxes, eliminate national debt, increase national defense and social spending. How? my magically thinking the economic expansion would do it all.
    4. misplaced faith. "I alone can fix it"
    post-truth is pre-facism
"The individual who investigates is also the citizen who builds. The leader who dislikes the investigators is a potential tyrant."

Love your posts AND both your and your interviewees calm but firm demeanour and genuine sincerity!!!
Strong men DO NOT THROW THEIR WEIGHT AROUND!
Because their strength and power shines through
Because they use their strength and power to help others and,
Because they only resort to using their strength and power in battle, as an absolute last resort.
Weak men use threats and bullying, including physical abuse and assaults, because they don’t have good intentions and they can’t use their brains 🧠 to resolve their own self-made problems, so they take it out on others who can’t fight back. Sounds like someone YOU KNOW?

Im a US citizen who currently lives abroad and has lived in a number of countries in my life. As such, i would opine that the US is below average in what one might call "citizen intelligence" or having a citizenry capable of being the foundation for a democracy. Im also a lawyer and i believe that legal structures have given the US a lot of the stability necessary for it to thrive in the last century or more. But those structures are weakening under Trump and i am not confident about the future. Authoritarian societies are not only morally and socially bad, they are also destined for economic failure.

Perhaps the US citizenry would have higher ‘citizen intelligence’ if basic education (esp in certain states) hadn’t been starved of funding/support for decades.

That this threat is unfolding in our time means it is our unique challenge, and possibly we can become a great generation if we come together to save our democracy. Possibly we had to get to this level of danger to see it for the threat it is. Tactical thinking means engagement and that we are at this point means there is no more being anesthetized and districted.
