I wonder if you have insights about the current supporters of Trump, did the initial supporters of dictatorship change their minds? The ones who not only obeyed in advance, but provided the initial support?
Thank you for that, much appreciate it (and I'm not concerned about where it came from!). Still can't grasp the situation yet, that we've been through this once before with this pathetic little man and so many thought it was a good idea to do it all over again.
Hi Ali - as a fellow Canadian, perhaps I might make a polite observation about US culture here. In my view Americans tend to put an inordinate value on winners and losers (you know, the old Vince Lombardi philosophy that winning is everything. Though I think later in life he revised his opinion on this) - so, all of a sudden the Republican's are revered for their brilliant electoral strategy and the knives come out for who is to blame within the Democratic Party for the loss. As Tom Nichol's suggests in the Atlantic that this misses the point. It was never really a fair fight. Fox and the right wing conservative echo chamber - not to mention hostile foreign actors have - over a long period, indoctrinated or inoculated many Americans with toxic extremism and lies. This control of the media, not to mention that by and large; Democrats tend to want to play fair (what were traditional American values - they've not contested the election, nor will they hamper the legitimate transfer of power) has been the reason that Harris lost the election. Looking at what Democrats did or didn't do is a moot point - they ran a great and inspiring campaign but they were going up against a toxic electorate that has been polluted by a Republican bodyguard of lies. Let's say you are a business manager and you are looking to hire a suitable candidate for a job (it could be any job). Watch the live feed of the Presidential debate on September 10th and any snippets from the last two weeks of the campaign and then tell me which of the two candidates you would hire for your business - or even which of the two candidates you would let your kids just listen to on TV. The propensity for one side to embrace lies and conspiracy theories (yes I know both sides lie to some degree - but the shear weight of lies on one side and the strategy of not ever admitting you were wrong when called out) - and the inability of a large majority of the electorate to discern the difference hamstrung the Harris campaign. Trump is the personification of the problem but it is one that is way more insidious. As Mr. Snyder says time to work together and build our own version Solidarność. Hang in there everyone!
Your comment is spot on and it is the core reason for all of this. It is the image that was created versus the reality. People, even, in addition, completely abandoned their common sense. There were so many things that taken out of the environment and looked at individually were completely and utterly absurd, that in any other context, common sense would immediately reject. And it's also the as you mentioned, The winner versus losers mentality kind of like you know football. But this isn't the football game. It's real life. But the media here has acquiesced for the most part to right-wing misinformation. Heather Cox Richardson also has a really good take on this. And all this other stuff is just noise. Trying to figure out what happened and all of that what happened was, full stop, a mirage created by right-wing misinformation and propaganda machine from foreign sources, combined with an electorate that is politically and historically illiterate.
We could argue until 2100 about who is responsible for what, but ultimately, the status quo that Dems have been trying to cling on to sucks for almost everyone in this country. Poisoning the information space has sped things up, and pointed us in a troubling direction, but the average American was already desperate for change.
@@lesliecurran1704 Thanks so much for your lengthy comment. You're right, it sure isn't a football game! Totally agree that the media has acquiesced to the right wing. I have checked out almost every single book published on politics these last 8 years. Timothy Snyder's books are among the few I found well worth my time. I even took notes from On Tyranny and emailed the key points to myself. To abandon facts is to abandon freedom. You submit to tyranny when you renounce the difference between what you want to hear and what is actually the case. Klemperer said truth dies in 4 modes: 1. open hostility to verifiable reality 2. endless repetition 3. magical thinking - openly embracing contradiction, ex. Trump promising to cut taxes, eliminate national debt, increase national defense and social spending. How? my magically thinking the economic expansion would do it all. 4. misplaced faith. "I alone can fix it" post-truth is pre-facism "The individual who investigates is also the citizen who builds. The leader who dislikes the investigators is a potential tyrant."
Love your posts AND both your and your interviewees calm but firm demeanour and genuine sincerity!!! Strong men DO NOT THROW THEIR WEIGHT AROUND! Because their strength and power shines through Because they use their strength and power to help others and, Because they only resort to using their strength and power in battle, as an absolute last resort. Weak men use threats and bullying, including physical abuse and assaults, because they don’t have good intentions and they can’t use their brains 🧠 to resolve their own self-made problems, so they take it out on others who can’t fight back. Sounds like someone YOU KNOW?
Im a US citizen who currently lives abroad and has lived in a number of countries in my life. As such, i would opine that the US is below average in what one might call "citizen intelligence" or having a citizenry capable of being the foundation for a democracy. Im also a lawyer and i believe that legal structures have given the US a lot of the stability necessary for it to thrive in the last century or more. But those structures are weakening under Trump and i am not confident about the future. Authoritarian societies are not only morally and socially bad, they are also destined for economic failure.
Perhaps the US citizenry would have higher ‘citizen intelligence’ if basic education (esp in certain states) hadn’t been starved of funding/support for decades. After everything that happened in past 8 yrs, IDK if remaining guardrails will hold better b/c forewarned or also fail due to continuing infestation.
@@williamtell5365 One could argue that deficient funding stems from anti-intellectualism, yes? 😉 (But tbt, not sure anti-intellectualism is tradition as much as centuries-old lever of keeping the masses as ignorant as possible?)
@GlobalCitizen_y2k I don't think education quality can simply be reduced to funding. The anti-intellectual strain in America, historically, is not driven by lack of funding. I don't agree there.

As ever, Professor Snyder is a bracing force for concerned minds. Thank you for being grounded in history and for giving us a blueprint for action. That this threat is unfolding in our time means it is our unique challenge, and possibly we can become a great generation if we come together to save our democracy. Possibly we had to get to this level of danger to see it for the threat it is. Tactical thinking means engagement and that we are at this point means there is no more being anesthetized and districted.
This is a smart guy & his message is totally backed by Ruth Bengiat’s advice that authoritarian regimes are weakest at the start & end. Pushing back starting now like the dem Governors Newsome, Pritzker, Waltz etc ❤
Tim Snyder, you are a bright light! What a relief to hear sanity, civility and what most Americans know in their heart to be the definition of “citizen of the USA.”

It bothers me that this nation does not give credence to intelligent people and quickly leans towards supporting people who shoot from the hip and are "do something ... anything" first and think the consequences through later.

We are lucky to have you here, your vast knowledge and wisdom are priceless.
Trump’s second term will be marred by chaos due to backbiting, infighting, corruption, incompetence, and cruelty. America, you get the government you deserve.😅
TDS in full effect.
How do you know?
@@mjt1517 Because the entire cast of characters are utterly shameless and unscrupulous. As in there is no honour among thieves. Hope that helps
@@mjt1517 Because high authoritarian types very predictably require an enemy. When/if the "Other" is deactivated as in the US in Jan. '25, they will have a trifecta of government and they will begin to chew at each others' necks -- as we have observed in the current US House of Representatives with the extremist, obstructionist faction. It follows as the night the day that they will fight amongst themselves for the alpha power and they will not accept collaboration. Authoritarianism is predator behavior.
The same as last time. 😢
Imagine electing a president who claimed that Hitler's invasion of Poland was wonderful and very savvy and then wanted a negotiated peace that allowed Hitler to keep conquered territory. We just elected a president who called Putin's invasion of Ukraine wonderful and very savvy and wants to allow Putin to keep 20 % of Ukraine.
Get help for your TDS. Trump will be YOUR President for the next 4 years. After that, JD Vance will be your president for 8 years.
Hi David. Kindly provide a citation for Trump calling Putin’s invasion of Ukraine ‘wonderful’. I wish to check it out for myself.
Youre not seriousare u he hasnt stopped praising Putin and saying Ukraine shoukd give up territory .
@@gaydavenport5449 Hi GDP. I would like to know the exact citation in which Trump called Putin’s invasion of Ukraine “wonderful”. And I do mean an exact citation.
[Why would anyone be “kidding” about such a request? I wish to check things out for myself. Do you have an exact reference?]
@@SystemsMedicine If you wish to check things by yourself you will find exact citation from Google. Why would you ask citation from third person? Trump is also saying one thing and meaning other thing so even exact citation would be maybe different than he would say that he was meaning... 🤔
So fascinating to watch in real time over a decade as one guardrail after another fell because an entire party of wealthy men chose greed over country. Probably confident that somehow somewhere SOMEONE ELSE would take him down .. and here we are .. the soul of America has been sold to the highest bidder and I think we all know who that is.
I propose it took several decades, with McConnell in the lead.
@@PAMELAPORTER-ci7mr
Very good point as McConnell could have stopped this buffoon and didn't.
@@PAMELAPORTER-ci7mr BUT, as Tim and ppl such as Ann Applebaum may have pointed out, there were key moments in the past 9 years when it was possible to get off the bus and few did. This is a profoundly dark dangerous social moment in american life and everyfckingone knows it except the deluded cultists and those noncultist rigthists who are just using it for their personal political and financial gain, or for the mania of power and the underlying threat of violence! (that IS what paramilitaristic behavior is all about! There are ONLY rightwing militias, not center-left or lefitst ones! FACT, i have researched it to death over the entire past 35 years into right now!
Thank you so much ! So many of us are wondering how far .
Good listen💙💙💙
We need people like Tim Snyder to guide us. He opened my eyes.
This is excellent. I appreciate it very much. Be strong, everyone. Don't get lazy or put your head in the sand.
These words come as the air. Thanks
Klemperer said truth dies in 4 modes:
1. open hostility to verifiable reality
2. endless repetition
3. magical thinking - openly embracing contradiction, ex. Trump promising to cut taxes, eliminate national debt, increase national defense and social spending. How? my magically thinking the economic expansion would do it all.
4. misplaced faith. "I alone can fix it"
post-truth is pre-facism
"The individual who investigates is also the citizen who builds. The leader who dislikes the investigators is a potential tyrant."
Love your posts AND both your and your interviewees calm but firm demeanour and genuine sincerity!!!
Strong men DO NOT THROW THEIR WEIGHT AROUND!
Because their strength and power shines through
Because they use their strength and power to help others and,
Because they only resort to using their strength and power in battle, as an absolute last resort.
Weak men use threats and bullying, including physical abuse and assaults, because they don’t have good intentions and they can’t use their brains 🧠 to resolve their own self-made problems, so they take it out on others who can’t fight back. Sounds like someone YOU KNOW?
He’s a national treasure.
This was perfectly helpful thank you
I am from Italy. My grandparents lived under Mussolini's rule. Should I say more?
Thank you, Professor Snyder ❤
Yes to all of this. And by the way, the Berlin Wall did not fall; it was pulled down - by the solidarity that Timothy Snyder describes.
I'm glad that I read your comment. I have been engaging in conversations about the proposed Project 2025. It seems like a recipe for economic failure.
@GlobalCitizen_y2k It's partly funding. It's partly a long tradition of American anti intellectualism. That's my view, anyway.
@@williamtell5365 One could argue that deficient funding stems from anti-intellectualism, yes? 😉
(But tbt, not sure anti-intellectualism is tradition as much as centuries-old lever of keeping the masses as ignorant as possible?)
@GlobalCitizen_y2k I don't think education quality can simply be reduced to funding. The anti-intellectual strain in America, historically, is not driven by lack of funding. I don't agree there.
We will win if we stick together!!
Good comments Mr. Synder. I have your books. They are easy reads. I will be pulling them out and reading them again.
Yes!!!
Thank you! We need encouragement, guidane, and clear recommendations on what to do now.
All need to hear this!!
The country will be controlled by a few business men and a clown 😢
Thank you so much for sharing your expertise. Yes. We all need to know more about our constitutional rights and law in order to know what to do to protect our civil rights.
“Do not obey in advance.” Exactly.
1. Love Timothy Snyder. 2. Timothy and others are rich enough to leave, Trump voters can't leave, they will need to live with the consequences of their vote.
Mid-terms will be VERY IMPORTANT!! Thank you Prof. Snyder! WE WILL NOT EAT CAKE!!
Thank you Mr Snyder. People need role models like you in times like these.
Feeling lonely and anxious. Okay. I will get a grip on my copy of On Tyranny. On Freedom on my to read list. Thank you, Timothy Snyder
YES! This. 🙏
Just bought professor’s book On Freedom. Hope to get some courage and inspiration during this difficult time.
Thank you So Much Mr Snyder ❤ 🇺🇸
We will fight for democracy and justice.
Timothy Snyder is inspiring. Beautiful interview. Thank you Ali Velshi.
Just like America voted for it in 2024. Just like we address climate change.

No one can take away your freedom without your consent
Gee, that's niave talk. They won't ask you for your consent.
Gee, that's naive talk. They won't ask you for your consent.
So you think that Ukrainians in occupied territories gave their consent?

Reminds me of that old Chinese curse, "May you live in interesting times."
Thank you Ali Velshi and Timothy Snyder. I appreciate you both so much!
When the going gets tough, the tough get going and the saints go marching in. This interview gives me hope.
I'd also suggest reading Vaclav Havel's book The Power of the Powerless, recommended by Snyder in his recent book On: Freedom. Resistance is possible. It always succeeds, even though it might be a long struggle to get there. Persistence. Adapt. Adjust. Overcome. Take the long game approach.

I am the same person but how do I handle my relationship to people who voted for Trump, feeling what I do about what he stands for for?
Thank you so much for your help!! I will follow your example and not get discouraged.
Proud to be the resistance.
"On Tyranny" is one of the most powerful books, Thank you Professor Snyder
We need to immediately set up a National hotline people who voted for Harris can call and request verification that their vote was counted and went to Harris. The election should not be certified until EVERY person who calls and requests a verification gets a confirmation that their vote went where it was supposed to go.
thiSs is huge, ive watched this segment three times and its therapy for my brain and my soul, it answers my question,,,,what can i do now and i can see my immediate future hoping to find others also in the resistance movement, i especially like Dr, Snyders comment that they can't rule without us and that Trumps only one lazy man. (lazy is my own effect)
Very insightful, Thank you
Very inspiring 🙏💙
Thank you to Professor Snyder for his patriotism and analytic mind. His honesty about the roots of Lebensraum etc. will stand the test of time as truth. His recognition of how the citizenry has been dumbed down, and why, should be read by every teacher in the country.

Thank you. I love following you.🎉
I needed this.
I do find the Professor's optimism surprising. Im going to check the books out.
This great man looks shell-shocked and must be so disappointed that his warnings went unheard by so many.
Thank you. I needed that.
It bothers me that this nation does not give credence to intelligent people and quickly leans towards supporting people who shoot from the hip and are "do something ... anything" first and think the consequences through later.
East Germany was a socialist country, not a communist country! I know, I grew up there. Americans took the freedom they are so proud of for granted. Ignorance will shield the people for a while, but eventually it will sink in. I wish more folks would think about the consequences, and the consequences of the consequences. I wish you all good luck! Stay strong!
Interesting to learn that Walter Ulbricht was not communist.
