Finally a Villages TH-camr addressed the fact that there is a large federal prison (largest in the nation in fact) within very close proximity to the newest section of TV! While this will not prevent us from purchasing in TV (but we are looking north of the turnpike), I do find it interesting that it is almost never discussed. In other cites where we have lived, the proximity to a prison always negatively affected property values. The prison system has concealed the views of the Colman complex fairly well - but that is no guarantee that it will remain that way. While I don't think there is much of a safety concern living near the prison, there may be a concern with the flow of visitors to the complex. There is no doubt that, given a choice, people would choose not to purchase a home near a prison - especially such a large prison...
I agree with you the complex is large compared to most prisons but the main entrance is not on right along the Villages and somewhat blocked by the trees. But it is a prison and something to consider. The Villages must not have any concerns as Eastport is about as close as any of the houses.
We live about a mile away from the prison as the crow flies. We don’t even think about it. It’s surrounded by a lot of deep woods. Sometimes when we’re driving home at night along Marsh Bend Trail we can see the prison lights. That’s really the only time you think of it. Pickle ball courts and barking dogs are louder and more intrusive. We actually get to see a lot of wildlife in our area as the prison is surrounded by acres and acres of deep woods. It is also federally owned property and it brings work and money to the area. Never have a problem with any visitors or traffic. I did have concerns before we moved in but now I know it’s not even a concern.
Hi Gary, it's nice to see another video from you because they are very informative. Yes I agree with you Gary because I used them too and it was a wonderful experience. They even found stuff that I didn't see and it was less than 24 hours and I was already getting phone calls to get things fixed. I think it was the best money that I spent. Hope you will have a Merry Christmas and enjoy your time off!!
We love one villa but is next to the gate but you can’t see it from the plants around. Do you think is still good to purchase next to the gate? The villa is beautiful that’s the only negative. I don’t know if someone has experience to live next to the gate of the community 😊
Pull up google earth map and find Eastport and look across the road. Coleman prison is a very large complex. I did put a shot of it in the video but it may have been too short a segment. The prison shouldn’t be an issue if the Villages built Eastport across from it.
What I also would like to hear about are disability and handicap friendly areas in the villages. I am 62. My husband and I are looking for a home in the villages, and due to my recent mobility disability I need to use a rolling walker to walk now. I would like to find a home directly on or near a paved safe walking path for exercise. But the villages cannot show me a single map with all the walking path areas, and where they begin or end. I also do not see many exercise or other classes for the mobility challenged. I want to find a quiet peaceful area to live in, with a pond view, but get so many conflicting opinions from realtors and residents. Coming from the Atlanta area, we do want to avoid highway noise. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.
Karen let me see if I can help. Take a look at the Vayens maps which include villages and another one shows multimodal paths. vayens.com/maps I also think their is walking paths on the Villages.net website or try this link on the .com website www.thevillages.com/trails-parks/pathways/#:~:text=Travel%20Your%20Way,to%20go%20in%20our%20hometown You may want to contact a Villages agent as they might have a map or point you to one. They may also be able to answer if their are any exercise classes. I do know they have lifts at each of the pools that I have been at. Hope you find you answers.
Great information on a subject not covered before.
Thanks for another great video Gary. Great honest information.
I try to keep it real!
What a terrific, informative video. Thank you! Doug
Glad it helped!

Merry Christmas to you too!
Might add any of The Villages waste water treatment plants to the list of location to be aware of.
You are right they are there and some can give off an odor.
Great video. Thank you and Happy Holidays!

I bet they run that place like a prison…
