Developing any audience that is willing to pay anything to begin with should be saluted. All the rest is semantics. That is actually the "hard" part of it all. Peace
I wish people would just go ahead and say the mainstream niggas used to diss on the internet rappers and it turned a lot of fans AND artists into believers that being independent made you "less than" and altered their whole mindset (and in some of the artists cases, their destiny) for the worse. I know we all remember those rap arguments where eventually somebody would start talking about radio/video spins, pop hits and sales, awards, and all that other bullshit that don't mean shit for REAL hip hop. Hell, as we can all see with Drake those arguments STILL go on to this day....
I like Rome’s content he drops with the mini movies. I think new artist need to look things like Rome, westside gunn or Larry June does, give the audience a whole experience like merch, movies etc and let the music be the soundtrack to all that. A strong and dedicated 300 is way better than a million casuals
Rome not only bring his street smarts to a commercial space and succeeding, but low & highkey he’s nicer than a lot of the other rappers out here. Get familiar, go get that Kontraband or Noise Kandy cause bro rap rap
That's a fact. His body of work is crazy. He hasn't dropped a bad project. Kontraband, Death & The Magician, Noise Kandy series, Street Farmacy, Kiss The Ring, Buck 50, Wasn't Built In A Day, Joyeria, Coup De Grăce, Razors Edge, Headcrack, and now Hatton Garden Holdup. Insane discography in a short amount of time.
even before Griselda look at someone like MF Doom. Doom had a strong cult following that intertwine classic child hood super hero/villain cartoons with rap. Rip the great MF Doom.
Love from the UK 🇬🇧 . I was having this same conversation with my cousin yesterday. A lot of the underground artists tour and have a cult following in Europe more than most of the other hip hop artists (outside of the Top 10 and legacy acts)
You learn to scale the business by making profit from all your resources that you make accessible to your supporting fans!!! Cut the middle man out. You're a business, brand, creat your own Ecosystem.
@ 7:00 how you scared of working towards something yourself vs sitting on your ass waiting for something like a deal to fall out of the sky this been the only way to survive as a underground rapper . There’s no set price on art you focus on making art and the rest will be history .
underground rappers don't make more than mainstream rappers that's cap tech 9 don't make more than the biggest rappers like drake j Cole Nicki travis rod wavelike baby lil durk but his makes more than the average mainstream rappers I think the suicide boys is the number 1 independent artist
Google for typing dumb stuff like this, Tech made $25Ms in 2023 and was 10th on the highest paid rappers for that year, 😂 the culture is much bigger and got way more motion than what gets served up commercially.
What many fail to realize that when you’re independent/underground you are the engine. You’re not recouping money for your label. Much of what you see is an illusion with mainstream rappers. They’re on advanced money. They’re not making making money off of streams or music. You have to tour and have brand deals. When you sale your own music, merch etc it’s yours when you understand how it goes independently. You have to focus on your own audience and stop competing. Hip-hop Artist have make a pivot because labels are no longer making them a priority. I work with artists daily. It’s possible.
Curren$y and others been killing the game as an underground artist.
Curren$y is the real blueprint how an artist should move

Tryin to get like THAT
ONCE AN ARTIST HAS BUILT A LOYAL FANBASE, THE REST IS A WRAP. GOOD MUSIC IS LIKE GOOD FOOD. YOU"LL PAY FOR GOOD PRODUCT.
Rhymesayers, Living Legends, Hieroglyphics, Project Blowed, Flee Lord, 38 Spesh and TRUST , Many have been doing it Direct Ground from the dirt
Them cats down Texas been killing it for years
This doesn't get talked about enough! One hell of a blueprint
You gotta have physical copies, technology ruined that blueprint
thats true the South in general and the Bay laid the independent game foundation
All the Texas artists have huge local followings. Big Key
Tx rappers richer than most of the rest of the country...
