    I have never been interested in tournament play. Maybe it's because I come from an RPG background first and really got into miniature gaming back in the day through the old Hero Quest game, but I've always just liked getting together with friends, taking out our little warbands, and going at one another but in a fun, casual way. That's probably another reason I'm drawn to games with a more narrative structure like Frostgrave, Stargrave, This Is Not A Test, Zona Alfa, etc. I care more about having a fun experience and telling a cool little story than "beating" someone. Who cares about a tournament. I want to hear about how you were sneaking through an exclusion zone when the dice rolls for an encounter went south and your stalkers were ambushed by a gang of drooling mutant children that came charging out of an abandoned school.

  • @fallenswan1670
    @fallenswan1670 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    One of reasons why I am focusing on Frostgrave is the fact, that you can play that, not only co-op (or competitively), but also as single player (PvM - player versus monsters). And I am focusing on single player and co-op. And because there is campaign - you will lose people, you will "hire" new people, you will learn new spells, new skills... That it is not just one battle here, other there... but there is story, there is continuation.
    Since I have limited resources, I only focus at moment for Frostgrave. But sooner or later I want also sci-fi setting (if nothing else, I want paint sci-fi stuff too). Dropzone Commander and Beyond Gates of something-something (Antares?) looks interesting... but when time comes, I will look more with detail. I also know existence of Stargrave... but who knows, maybe I want something different in that point?

    Good stuff! There's definitely a place for both casual and competitive play, but it very much depends on having players who share our same mindset. If you and your opponent are both playing the game with different goals, that's where a lot of bad experiences can happen. I like the occasional competitive game but figuring out that i'm much more into a narrative, casual, laid back experience has vastly improved my enjoyment from the hobby. Just to do a bit of crass self promotion (sorry!), I have some casual style battle report videos on my channel, if anyone is interested in that sort of thing

    • @ScooterinAB
      @ScooterinAB 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't have a problem with rule changes or new editions of the game. The problem I have is when the rulebooks for said new editions are about $80 and are already invalidated by the time you bought it, when any given edition lacks playable rules for all armies, and when the edition only lasts a few years before you have to buy a dozen more $80 rulebooks.
      But yeah. I would love to find some 2nd edition players so I can enjoy that trainwreck again. The edition we've been playing was suspiciously suggested by one friend of mine, whose army just happened to have a good release in that edition.

    I started wargaming when I was 25, now I am in my 50s. As GW prices went up I dropped GW. I have an Infinity Army when I get the competative itch but only play locally and I am certain I will loose but I do it mostly to hang out. The rest of the time, tournaments are at my home or someone else's home when we can gather 8 to 10 people and setup the garage in the summer. Last time was memorial day and the next will be 4th of July while flipping burgers. For anyone new, take the time to enjoy the game and spend the min. you need to play with your friends. Unless you are in an area with a large number of competative players with lot of tournaments and you have a lot of time and money to spend, casual play is far better for most people.
    Enjoy the hobby the way you want but make sure it stays fun and does not become work. I feel like a lot of competative play is more work than play and only the people with the most time and money are able to win.

    On the flip side, it can be really, really difficult to find a group to play casually with. Years ago, I got into HeroClix because a bunch of my comic-fan friends were playing. We had a really fun casual group going. When I moved across the country, I tried a couple of times to find players, but only found tournament play, which was cruelly cutthroat. I had the same experience with X-Wing and with Star Trek. When I started collecting Star Wars: Legion last year, I did so with the clear understanding that there wasn't even a tournament scene near me (in a fairly densely populated part of Southern California). My wife, who played Warhammer: Fantasy years ago, recently bought the Age of Sigmar: Dominion starter (it was half off at our FLGS), mostly so she would have a bunch of minis to paint, but also because I assured her I would play with her. We have a huge group of friends who play RPGs and board games, but none who play miniature wargames.

  • @caseyrusher8952
    @caseyrusher8952 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    One of the biggest reasons I pretty much fell out of the wargaming scene is because of competitive players. My local environment is very heavy on keeping up with all the competitive stuff, which there's nothing wrong with, but it was almost impossible to find players that didn't want to "min-max" and make tournament lists. Even "garage hammer" became the LVO. I'm sure you can guess I don't enjoy that. But I wish more people would (in my area) would be less competitive. But then again, if that's fun for everyone else, who am I to make them play games that aren't fun?

    I appreciate a good point in the hobby is customisation, do whatever you want, be creative and have fun enjoying it in your own way. That being said, it is a pity there is not a standard of a good gameplay with mechanics beyond a large and complex rulebook, unbalanced lists, measuring and throwing dices. Mechanics used in board games could be interested but GW does not have an interest in making a good game, they have an interest in selling new miniatures. Even initiatives like The 9th Age carry on the faults of GW and just try to maintain what was existing. I guess one day one company will get it right and deliver a product that will meet demands, particularly for new players. Probably with an App or something like that... Some kind of virtual tabletop and you can use your own minis, taking ownership of the backbone (standard mechanics, calculations, events...) and leaving space to the community to enhance it and not demanding regular payments for a new made up thing nobody demanded.

Even losing was fun, and I lost a lot of games in the beginning. I got to the point where I was planning and being a TO at my local gaming pub. Covid shot that all to h***, of course. Anyway, I encourage anyone to at least try a store event. It might not be for you, but I thought that, and changed my mind.

    Competitive play wrecks so much of the game. It makes only a small number of models valid (why would you field anything but the best), it twists lore for the sake of power, it makes bad rolls frustrating rather than hilarious, it makes things extra tense when you do things like template weapons and even movement, it makes rule disagreements extra explosive, it can leave you feeling rubbish after spending 80 hours or whatever painting your army.

    • @briancripps496
      @briancripps496 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I also regularly see people complain about the "barrier of entry" for new players, only to have the complainer list off half a dozen optional extra rules that are only "needed" in a tournament environment, and the time it takes to build a 2,000 point army (again, not needed outside tournaments). They then blame GW for the community forcing this barrier of entry on said new player. It's a huge pet peeve of mine that they don't seem to understand that literally all a new player needs is their codex and even then, not always, 'cause a few learner scenarios can be done using the free rules found in the build instructions.
      A community focus on competitive play slowly chokes communities to death, and I have seen it multiple times. It's happening again in 40k, too.

    • @bloodbarage

      Totally agree.. playing with optimized lists is supremely boring. As soon as you attach some sort of “prize” to a tournament, people lose their minds and only want to build something that is auto-win.
      No one wants to take the time to explore an army and build something that has a cool backstory, it’s all about how can I crush my opponent on turn one.

    I'll take it further: out of all the people who wargame, the percentage that do tournaments is minimal. Most games are between friends or people that become friends because of gaming. In fact, for the total noob, it's worth remembering that you don't have to play at all if that's not really your thing.
    This hobby has three main parts:-
    The craft side - the building, painting, and collecting.
    The gaming.
    The lore (esp. 40k, of course, but others are also going down that route because it's immersive and therefore popular).

    40k really needs two sets of rules. One for the tournaments, and another that don't change just for the sake of changing. I've been playing since the '90s and every player I used played with back then eventually rage quit the hobby because of a GW rebalance or rules reboot to 'keep it fresh' for the tournament players.

    Seems like just editing the points does not help with balance in 40k. I observed that an overpowered army is so because it has ridiculous amount of stacking rules that allow huge damage outputs, invincible save options and endless amounts of re-rolling. I stopped playing at our local shop because too many overpowered armies so I started setting up my own games at home with heavily modified rules: No one model can have more than 4 attacks per turn. No one model can do more than 2 damage per weapon (an exception to this would be a D3 or a D6 damage weapon) the max AP allowed for any model is -2, only 1 re-roll allowed per unit for any phase, and we eliminated all Feel No Pains. Just doing those rules across all factions have made for some fantastic games that come down to the wire and make players have to really strategize more on the objectives. I gravitated toward Sigmar because it seems to be a little more balanced. I sure love the Path to Glory format. Great video! Keep up the good work! Ben

    I'd also like to highlight something you almost touched on adjacently... you dont have to be good to play in competitive situations. I play a lot of video games (ok, a lot of one video game) and I'm not terribly talented at it. But I sign up for competitive events all the time because the atmosphere is fun and the people are usually pretty cool to talk to. Same thing when I played sports. I was always average but going to tournaments was a blast because the atmosphere was always exciting. I never won. And nobody ever cared if you won or lost the day after the event. They just cared that people were there having fun and being excited together.
    You dont have to play competitively. But you also dont have to be good to enter competitions as long as you're having fun.

  • @ScooterinAB

    Competitive play can chew on my ass. I took stats to do academic research, not try and eek out an extra wounding hit or two with my toy soldiers. I build and allegedly play my army because I want to. I like the models and I like the lore I've built to support the model choices. I don't spend thousands of dollars buying the army that's the most broken right now, only to throw those models out in a few models and go for the next winning army. When I started playing 40k, we didn't have tryhards. I'm sure they existed, but I never heard about them because people were still playing 40k as a game, not as their term paper.

      I'm in a gaming group and most of us are RPrs and we always played that the rule of cool trumped all but we brought in one player's brother in law. He is a highly competitive player he gets very frustrated with any rule fudging or if the GM pulls out surprises for narrative purposes. He is starting to mellow out after nearly a decade. 😊

    Yes you don’t have to play competitively but the fact of the matter is, it entirely depends on your local meta. Whether you play with a small group of friends, strangers at the local hobby club or your a tournament regular, you will have a local meta. This meta realy does define what you’re army will be able to get away with, if your small group of friends are very competitive with competitive armies, you’re not going to have fun playing an army that hasn’t been optimised, and I won’t listen to a single person who says they’re happy to lose every single game they play, because they’re lying, it eats away at you until you eventually cave in and begrudgingly optimise your army. If your local meta isn’t competitive, people use the models they like or are able to buy rather than having 3 of every efficient unit in the codex, you can do the same because really, you won’t end up losing every time, everyone is on a level playing field. The thing is, if you play a game that has constantly changing rules, the power dynamic within a local meta can shift immeasurably.

    I have known people who switch out their basecoated only armies for the newest meta ones. The models I find become numbers and simple representation of stats, as opposed to warriors and characters with stories. Don't get me wrong I'll always try to build a list and have some wombo combos but I almost always play thematically and switch in things that I know suck as and when just to see them on the tabletop.

    Biggest success story to this might be MiniWarGaming. Built on covering GW games (specific to 40K for awhile) and other game systems in the future but in sport of friendship and fun. 95ish% of the lists were always made for fun, fluff or just to try something out and they are some of the OGs of Battle Reports. All my local players even if they do hit the tournament circuit are always up for fun games, and are good to get coaching from.
