  • Whilst I was up at Criterium Cycles Paul borrowed an electric van for me to try. The latest move in his quest to convert me to Van Life !
    Thanks to Western Commercials I got to try the new Mercedes eVito Tourer, in the L3 long wheelbase spec. Equipped with a 100kw battery pack the eVito will so over 220 miles on a charge and can do rapid charging. It is easily the fastest van I have ever driven and would make an interesting option for either and active family that wanted more range and practicality than many electric SUVs, or a business wanting to improve the green credentials.
    Thanks to Furgus and Western Commercial. If you are in the Edinburgh area then get in touch if you want to know more...tinyurl.com/yn...

    Thanks for the video. I picked up our Peugeot e-expert 75kw battery back in mid August, already clocked up 5k in it. Using it in the building trade carrying full set of carpenters tools, will carry a 8x4 sheet had 100 bricks with all tools in it and couldn't feel a thing. Very fast off the lights in sports mode leaves cars trailing. Does 170miles on a charge loaded up but average around 100 miles per day. Top up each night on my 5p tariff so just over £ 2 per hundred miles. Will rapid charge at 100kwh 0 to 80 % in half hour but no need for this as I leave with a full tank each morning. My previous van was around £ 80 per week in diesel, this van a tenner. The diesel version was about £ 180 per month cheaper to by ( ev £ 280 per month ) but it pays for itself due to such cheap running costs. Gone full electric now with Tesla as family car 😀

    I’m looking into electrical vans at the moment, unfortunately my grandmother will have to be in a wheelchair to transport from now on. So was looking into vans/minibus options. It’s something I was looking into because even the “normal” minibus with lifts are pricey, but if city centres become ULEZ then a ev minibus with lift or ramp access is the key.

    It would be great if they introduced V2L on vans so you can charge tools, use plugged accessories such a lights, kettle and a fridge. We have leased an Ioniq 5 so we can use electricity to keep our food hot on our food stall. There are so many advantages to V2L and now eVans ( no pun intended to many welsh people) are coming out, the options keep getting better :)

    Thanks for the video. Great 'van'. I really wanted to get this before I bought my Vito Crew van DIESEL... AGAIN! Unfortunately if you are a tradesman and want to also claim the VAT, forget it. The Tourer is registered as a car and you can't claim VAT! So, with the price of min. 42K+VAT (registered, and used a bit as demo) against the diesel 27K+VAT(where 5K of vat I could claim back), I had no choice but to take the diesel one... Overall it would be TWICE more expensive then the diesel one! I still regret I didn't go for other brand which offers a choice of typical vans with more than just ply interior - crew van (5,6 seater)with bigger battery. Hope next time when I have to change they will be a bit cheaper and more choice in MB 'real vans' .

    Even for personnel use, I do wonder if an electric van is better than an electric SUV or electric car. I suppose it does depend on whether you are regularly taking heavy loads in the vehicle that you are using for personnel use. For commercial use, I think many electric vans and for that matter electric lorries need to be able to travel longer distance, than many are currently able to do. Until that happens, an ideal solution would be a commercial vehicle that on motorways could use diesel power, but be able to be adding charge to the batteries, such that when delivering around cities they could be using electric power. The problem with that though, is having the space within a commercial vehicle to provide both, but still keeping the vehicle at a price that businesses can afford. Amazon, have gone in some areas where feasible to electric vans. However, they still use diesel juggernauts between their distribution sites, which unfortunately are mostly nowhere near any of the UK railway lines.

    Super idea for fleet use however… our company has issued us with e vivaro s the claimed range is 200 miles from a 75kwh battery in reality loaded up roof bars on 120miles tops about the doors 110 miles on the motorway tops taking it easy as it’s just a massive brick. A long journey recently 354 miles from just north of Edinburgh to Coventry for me 6.5 hours took me 9.5 hours with all the stops for a charge etc it was a long Arduous day I think unfortunately we are not quite there in terms of technology! Also Mercedes Benz is horrible with the dash design oh god compare to other brands pls. It's old and ignition on the left haha ha and still a key? Imagine you are a delivery guy and you have to enter/exit your vehicle 30x a day and you have to put the key in on the freeking left side! Why? Why? One of the reasons I will not buy this car. Sick to death of the promoting of "stronger regen". Well, its good if you want to be lazy driver, but its not more economical than lower regen or coasting.
    Lots of schoolboy errors too. like refering to battery capacity in kW instead of kWh, saying motorway driving halves real range ( claiming a 100kWh battery does less than 100 miles) etc.

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Regan has nothing to do with being a 'lazy driver', it's simply using the laws of physics to charge battery and is also good at reducing brake pad wear. I agree referring to battery capacity as kW on not kWh was lazy but every body watching the video will know what it mean so a little pedantic and the range comment was tongue in cheek humour not statement of fact.
