    Hi Becca, I planted a Chinese Maple tree when my son was born and planted a few flowers around it. He's 32 now and still talks about his tree.

    A couple weeks before my mom passed away she gave me a plant and said “Here, take this home and keep it alive. I’ve had it since you were little.” I still have it 17 yrs later but yes, it’s a lot of pressure but also neat that I still have it. It’s a palm. It was in a Pyrex dish and looked pretty sad… now it’s a giant tree.

    I had a planned c section at 4pm so that morning I went to a pop up plant sale to take my mind off of the nerves. I bought a little Syngonium that I promised would be “her” plant and I would try to keep alive as long as possible. I almost killed it while caring for a newborn but I’ve since brought it back to life and it’s made it 9 months so far.

    • @ShannonRose99
      @ShannonRose99 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had a syngonium that I neglected over the winter and it lost every leaf, but I cut it back to just stems and put kieki cloning paste over almost every node and it’s done amazing! They are incredibly resilient if you just don’t give up on them. Good luck on your new baby and your plants. ❤

    Hi Becca, my Mom planted a purple clematis vine around the light post near our driveway the day before I was born and it still grows (or outgrows) the post now. It is so beautiful…. A perennial, so it comes back year after year more beautiful than the last. 😊

    • @jessicapetrin1655
      @jessicapetrin1655 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think if you do plant something, an outdoor perennial (bulbs are great), is a nice choice…. Then, you don’t have to worry about killing it.. and i totally get why you wouldn’t want to get a houseplant at the same time.

    Love that! My daughter's name was picked by me years and years ago too... I always adored the name Noelle so when we found out she was a girl on Christmas morning, it felt perfect! She actually turns 8 tomorrow (May9)

    For a baby plant, maybe take a propagation of a plant you already have & like as "their" plant. Birth month it's a 1 node/leaf water prop & it grows with them.
    Less pressure on care & you can track their growth together

    I know someone that has had a family snake plant - it’s been in the family for 30 plus years and is probably 5/6 ft tall now. With a new baby on the way they decided to start another baby snake plant for when the baby is born. It’s a good plant pick for this because they are so easy! So as it gets handed down it’s pretty sure fire to keep alive 😊

    Hi Becca! We received an azalea when my first was born. We dug it up and moved it with us when we moved. We lost a bunch of trees during a storm one summer and it looked like one of our trees had fallen on the shrub. I was devastated. BUT! The tree was about two inches from squishing the plant. We are so happy to have our 'Dominic Bush.'

    I RESONATE WITH THIS. We had a ficus moclame tree in our wedding ceremony, and they are so dang finicky. It is acclimated now, but when I got it home it lost every single leaf. I felt like it was a sign for our marriage. 🤣 (I also make everything way too deep.) My husband actually laughed as he overheard you talking about this!!! I am so the same. (I will say the tree is nice because it doesn’t get big too fast!!)

    You should switch to chache pots! Especially for your maranta. You won't have to lift heavy pots off the shelf and you don't have to repot when you want to switch out pots. It'll lengthen time between watering too!

    I can't remember who but someone in one of my groups said her mother took a cutting of her grandmother's pothos when she was born and grew it out and now that she's had her own daughter, she has a cutting of her mother's plant to grow. I like the idea of that. A simple enough plant to care for but one that's shared down generations.

    I gave away spider plant babies at my baby shower and ended up with an extra that unintentionally became my son’s baby plant! I had no plans to have a plant grow up with my baby, but they’re both 16 months now and the spider plant is ready to be repotted for the first time! I’m glad his unintentional baby plant is the easiest and most forgiving plant ever so I don’t have to stress about its care lol. I also had my son’s name picked out way before I ever even met his dad and planned for him. Props to all the dad’s that just go along with the first born’s name. They really are the MVPs

    My brother gifted me a Syngonium albo that he took the cutting of on the same day my baby was born. Unfortunately it went suicidal and went all white and dropped all of its leaves. It was super high car to begin with... The nodes are activating now though and I’m getting some little baby leaves.

    My parents planted birth trees when my sister and I were born. We moved away from that house, and I'm pretty sure one of the new owners cut one of the trees down, but they were super cool when we were growing up! We used to try to climb each of our trees and, eventually, that's how we did learn to climb them! I don't know what type of trees they were, but we called them flicker trees and other people called their seeds helicopters.

    Most of my plants are in terra cotta because it’s my preference, and I have DEFINITELY put a plastic nursery pot into a terra cotta pot with a plant that would prefer more moisture 😅. It just looked better than the plastic. I basically used the terra cotta pot as a cachepot, particularly because I just didn’t have any other cover pots or ceramic/glazed pots on hand in the right size. It worked well!

    The best type to buy as a “daughter’s plant” is a tree. Bonsai or slow growing, easy care etc. Or you can dedicate one specific type of plant so that if it does die, you can just repurchase the same plant and the symbolism remains. My favorite to purchase is the ficus elastica because of its resilience.

    I've been following you since I saw your poppy video from Cali! So I've seen all of your tiny apartments, lol. It's definitely been a journey with you! I'm glad you finally have a yard to venture out in and spread your wings. I've loved every minute of following you along in these years and watching you grow.
    Also, that white fusion makes me want to get another one! I use to have one years ago. It got so big! And then spider mites got it, lol. If I could give you any advice today it's to give it regular baths.
    And I'd put that Mother of Thousands somewhere where the babies will fall into their own pot and not on the ground, lol. Otherwise you'll have babies EVERYWHERE! Just trust me, lol!

    I like the idea of a plant to grow with baby girl. But I would definitely pick something easy & forgiving. Like a pothos, heartleaf philodendron or Hoya. While I see the benefit of an outdoor plant, I thought you were thinking of moving soon- I would want something to take with me. Plus with the plants above, if something happens to the plant you can always propagate a portion- much less stress!

    Not a houseplant (usually, though some can thrive in a pot too), but depending on your hardiness zone you could try a fruiting tree/bush! Trees are hardy. And if you're lucky, by the time your daughter is around 10, you'll have fruit to enjoy together :)

    You could Just get some kind of pothos or something gir your girl and just always keep a cutting of that. And then when she moves out one day you can give her a cutting as well (:
    I think it’s hard to kill a pothos and even if it’s half dead, a cutting can be saved most of the time and you can also keep it when moving an so one because you just have to keep one small part of it (:

    Beautiful calathea. Speaking of names, do you think you'll name your baby after a plant theme like Ivy or Fern? I know it's probably a secret but any hints?

    I know a Lilac. Cutest little blonde curly head. I like unique names that aren’t plain weird or those that sound like the parents tried too hard. I also don’t like names that rhyme with things or those with too many syllables. I like the challenge of names. All that said, my girls have one syllable boys names 😂

    Oh man I had a calathea white fusion before, and wow she was sure pretty lol. Damn spider mites ate her alive, but I did have her for a month or two 😅. Hm, wishlist plant is probably the anthurium luxurians, just love the texture.
