it really comes down to just living and growing up in different circumstances and environments. I can understand how tebow wants the game of football, in college, to remain untarnished and what not but he has never had to watch his siblings go to sleep hungry, he's never had to watch his parent cry and stress over wondering how they will keep the lights on or get their kids school clothes, he doesnt understand the struggle and losses that many of these student athletes have gone thru and endured already in their lives. Tebow can say all he wants about keeping the game pure but as long as the NCAA is what it is, there's no such thing as pure in college sports. These schools and organizations are making millions off these kids and bc you give them a room and scholarship, that is supposed to be enough? you have plenty of non student athletes who spent years in school all to get a job that will never allow them to come out in front as they have thousands of dollars in student debt. This may be the only chance these kids have to make money bc only a few go on to make it in the pros. Why not give them a stipend each week during the season? or whatever money they make off autographs and what not, put it aside where they can only touch so much of it at a time. So many of these kids break the rules or contemplate it bc they came from the struggle and their familes still struggle, let some of that money go to help their families bc right now, everyone but the kids are making money off them and most if not all of their intentions are way less and worst than the ones these young student athletes have

So what infraction did the NCAA make regarding the families ? They are not responsible for the tears of the mother or father. The only reason you are there is cause of academic execellence and athletic ability that suit your talent level. If not you wouldnt get a scholarship you would have to walk on.Last point the NCAA is not responsible for quality of life outside of college its there life and they live it to best suit them if they want to cheat thats there decision.

1st off, Love Tim Tebow and respect him a ton, and everyone should know they don’t have to 100% agree with someone else’s perspective all of the time, Tim has his view point just like each of us has our own, we ought to be grateful for multiple perspectives and remain respectful in the midst of differences, I do think it’s messed up in a sense that players are some of the only ones not making a profit when they put so much at risk as well as invest so much into the sport, that being said, I think whatever is decided must be done with many different perspectives being brought together to arrive at the best possible decision for all involved, it won’t be perfect of course but at least we should try to set a strong foundation for adjustments moving forward. 😉

I think he deserved to be debated on his opinions. But I think the point is that instead of attacking him as a person and his “privilege” they should be going after what he says. And yes people are going after him for what he’s saying but you and I both know that many people are gleefully using his race and his background as a tool to discredit him. That’s not how it should be done. It’s being done to other people of all backgrounds in other areas and that’s disgusting too. But just because it’s being done to others doesn’t mean we should also follow along. We have to be better.

Lol stop, he was very privileged. Yes his parents were missionaries, but many of them are loaded to begin with. Ever wonder how people could just not work for years on end to serve as missionaries? More often than not, it’s because they have money.
More importantly though, they had enough money to move him to one of the richest counties in Florida just so he could play football. Now THAT’S real money. Also, he had a two-parent household, and generations of stable income with his grandparents. That all is the definition of privilege. Does it mean he was rich? Not necessarily. But gtfo with the “oh he’s just a poor missionary who grew up on a farm” narrative. This is why his argument is so out of touch. He didn’t even acknowledge other player’s backgrounds to any meaningful degree. Just so fucking cringeworthy. I’d love to see Tebow make this argument to a guy like Josh Jacobs, who was homeless growing up, has just as much passion that Tebow drones on about, and is an absolute class act all around.

Not to mention it wouldn’t be fair to all of the athletes that have come before, that have been drafted and earned every penny to their name. Just wait & see. • @TheJuxify

It feels to me like no one has ever heard of sharecropping. Let me first preface my statement by saying I am a white male in College.
Sharecropping was a practice commonly used among white farmers who wanted to keep their black slaves after slavery was abolished. White farmers would pay their former slaves in crops, almost all of the slaves were uneducated and equality was forced and not accepted. They may have been "free" but they didn't really have a place to go. These "former" slaves would be paid only in food, they would have no money and were unable to own any land for themselves or take any steps towards becoming an independent, functioning member of society.
The NCAA is basically sharecropping athletes. I'm going to be brutally honest, I played football in high school, and some of these kids were really, really dumb. They weren't going anywhere in life and genuinely struggled to maintain the student athlete required 2.0 GPA. Football was and is their only way out into a life that would give them opportunities other people have. This isn't a blanket statement that all athletes are dumb, there are plenty of intelligent ones; however, I'd say its pretty safe to say that a majority of athletes are below the average level of intelligence.
Rules require they be in school, and just like the kids struggling in high school, college does not get easier and that GPA must still be maintained. They have to attend all of their classes, do all of their homework, in many cases get extra study time and in addition to all of that practice. They travel so frequently that I doubt many employers would hire them even if they could find the time to get a job. Former slave owners paid their former slaves with something that has value, but doesn't help them progress. These colleges are giving them scholarships for "free" but it's of no true value to them.
At a bare minimum colleges should be forced to pay their players a minimum wage for how often they have to practice, at least this way they can afford all necessities and some amenities.

RenR70 But The Colleges aren’t paying. This law will just allow players who are good enough to use their likeness to get money on the side, from brand deals and what not which the NCAA shouldn’t have any business in IMO

Before I say anything, I'm all for this endorsement allowance. I certainly object to a for-profit organization limiting a legal adult's ability to make THEIR own profits, which is why endorsements should have always been allowed from the start.
With that said, no one who advocates for college athletes being paid a salary has given enough thought to the disastrous implications it would have for the 95% of collegiate athletes who DON'T play football or basketball. The budget for all the other sports programs at a given school would almost certainly be significantly redirected towards football and basketball programs, as they are the money makers for the school. While that's probably good news for fans of those sports, fans and athletes of all other sports would unquestionably suffer as a result.
Additionally, Football and Basketball would instantly become even more top-heavy than they are already. Just consider the fact that for these two sports its pretty much the same handful of schools consistently dominating. Paying players would all but guarantee that these marquee schools would be able to quickly establish a monopoly on the highest level talent through exorbitant salary offers that other schools would be unable to match. Basically, the Alabama, Clemson, Duke, etc type dynasties would continue, and intensify. That's an idea I'm sure most of us find nauseating.
I understand the racial implications of two sports with 60-80% black athletes making no money while their skills are monetized by a bunch of suits in LA and NY, but the focus needs to be shifted to other solutions, as salaries are quite simply unthinkable.

As Lebatard says: “If college classes are such valuable compensation, then compensate Saban and Dabo in 8mil/year worth of college classes and dorm room living.” Instead of a salary, just give them a coupon for a lifetime supply of college classes. Oh wait, that’s a shitty deal? Thought so...
