  • Welcome to the channel everyone, if you're new here my name's Jake and in this episode I drag a 1973 Kenworth W925 out from the corner of a shed where it sat for 20 years with a blown 6v92 Detroit, watch me drag it home and wash all the barn dust off of it in preparation for a new engine to go in and prepare the truck to get ready for the road again.

    G,day Jake , great old banger in camera vision looks be complete and no major damage, well bumper is little bent , needs high rise stainless air cleaner tube, and a 3408 cat be nice choice, great bones for a great classic build

    • @dieseldownunder.
      @dieseldownunder.  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks mate! That bumper has to go it’s too skinny and not from a kenworth, yes it will get high rise intakes, the 3408 will have to wait for another truck I think, being a narrow hood the radiator wouldn’t be big enough to cool an engine of that size!

    The 92 series came out in 1974. Not sure if that was the original engine. The 6V92TTA was a "fuel squeezer" model set at 270 hp @ 1950 RPM. The TAs were 350@ 2100.
    What a good project. To fit a Cummins or Cat in that engine bay would require extra work.

    • @dieseldownunder.
      @dieseldownunder.  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for the info! This truck was a 290 Cummins from the factory and sometime in the 80s it was converted to 6v92, so it could be put back but someone did all the hard work converting it to Detroit with kenworth spec parts so that’s why I’ve decided to leave it like that.

    Good score mate. Sort of partial to some Detroit power but any of the big three will be ok by me. They all have their pros n cons. As long as it from the good ole USA im a fan. Remember its only original once. Apart from the repower will make a great rig. Get it back working. 600hp and youll be pulling doubles or more in no time. Will have the boys swarming around it at the truck stops for sure. Nu sub.

    • @dieseldownunder.

    After some decades, the braided airlines get corrosion in them, get very stiff and break. lots of work, but very worth it. Doubt Kenworth will ever make trucks as good as they were from the 1970's to the late 1980's.

    I recon at one point when it was newer she had a Cummins under the hood? If not that sticker on the dash doesn’t make much sense LOL. If it was a Turbo 903 I can sure understand why they’d go to a 6V92TA….the same power with twice the reliability and 20% better fuel economy. Now if she had an 855 swapping over to a V92 would be a bit more of a surprise to me but I can still understand why one would do it if they had a fleet of mostly Detroit’s.

    • @dieseldownunder.
      @dieseldownunder.  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey mate yes from factory it was a 290 Cummins, I have no idea why that was removed and the Detroit fitted as we arnt sure who fitted it, somthing must have happened to the engine and I reckon they had this Detroit on hand with all the bolt on’s already or they had a wrecked truck with this engine ready to go. Hopefully as time progresses I can price together more history about it

      I’d love too but they are quite hard to find here and the limiting factor for this truck is the narrow hood/radiator it wouldn’t be able to cool a big engine like a 3408 or c15, I have a wide hood kenworth I will fit a big engine too one day though!

    Wow! What an amazing find! I assume you'll be putting in a 6V92 Detroit, right? Would love an ASMR style driving video of it once it's roadworthy! What truck were you using to haul it home? I thought I heard you driving a truck with a Cummins ISX - I love the sound of the ISX engines! If possible, can you please do a super long uncut ASMR style video of the truck with the ISX, with engine startup at the beginning and engine shutdown at the end? Please make it as long as possible, more than 2 hours long, so I can fall asleep to the sounds of the ISX engine running up and down through the gears, cruising, etc. Please let me know ASAP.

      Hey mate yes this truck will be getting a 6v92 back in it and I can definitely do that once it’s up and running! Yep good ear the k108 has a isx egr in it set at 550hp, next time I do a load in it I’ll set the phone up somewhere to get clean audio or might invest in a GoPro as I’m sure that would produce better sound quality. I don’t drive that truck every day but when I’m in it next I’ll put somthing together for you👍🏻

      Why put an electronic engine in a classic truck already set up for a good old mechanical Detroit? Plus if you went to that CAT you’d have to upgrade the trans, radiator and driveline….that’s a lot of money. Those C15’s in their weakest form still put out nearly 2,000 lb-ft and the stronger rated ones actually put out more than that….this truck would have a 125xx or 146/147xx series transmission in it and you’d have to go to at least a 209 series 13 or 18 speed if not a 229 series, that’s a $6-8,000 difference in price not including buying the clutch or stronger driveline, yokes and joints. Even the strongest 500hp military spec 8V92TA’s didn’t make over 1,500 lb-ft, heck even the KTA-600 Cummins and 3408 CAT didn’t make any more than 1,600 lb-ft when they were putting them in trucks. these 2k ft-lb plus engines are something that’s only really been around for the last 25 years or so, the Signature 600 ISX Cummins and 3406E CAT were the first of their kind in that regard and a lot of these older trucks just don’t have the drivetrain components or cooking system to keep up with that kind of stress. The 38k and higher rated Rockwell and Eaton rears will generally take the higher torque engines OK although a 44 or 46k rated tandem set is ideal for big power. It’s just everything else that isn’t really up to the task. Heck a lot of the 70’s model trucks only came with 14” clutches but that was considered plenty back then and the 15” was overkill. If you go and talk to guys with the big torque producing modern engines in their older trucks at shows they’ll be the first to tell you what all needs done to get the things to last if you’re actually going to work them. If they’re just going to be bobtail only show trucks or trailered around then it’s no big deal but I talked to a fellow with a BUILT C18 in an A-model 78’ ex-hood W900 that was still running the 6x4 twin sticks the truck came with when it was a 3406A and he said the first time he took it out loaded he blew the main transmission on the first big hill…it sheared all the teeth off 4th gear. He said it takes a light foot and early downshifts to keep those old transmissions alive and if you wanted to get all you could out of an engine like his that makes 700+ hp and well over 2,500 lb-ft you really need an 18 speed and rears geared 3.73 or higher….his still had 4.63’s in it and the electronic engines make all their power so low in the RPM’s any gear slower than 4:1 in the rears is just a waste.
