Yamaha FS1-E 'Fizzy' 1970's Single 50cc

  • Don humorously reviews and test rides the iconic Yamaha FS1-E 1970's moped, affectionately known as the 'Fizzy'. Although at first not impressed by this 50cc toy for teenagers, his opinion changes as this little machine hauls him around the countryside. He appreciates that for many boy racer's of the the 70's and 80's, this bike was legally the closest they could get to a motorbike. It had a 2 stroke motor, 5 speed gearbox and looked like a motorbike. Downhill with a gale behind you, these machines could allegedly reach speeds in excess of 60mph

I'm lucky enough to have owned a Popsicle Purple one from 1978 to1980 when I sold it. It had huge sentimental value to me so I spent years and years looking for it. Then, in 2021 it turned up just 40 miles away from me. It had been partly restored, so I bought it and finished the restoration. Now, 46 years later, it sits in my garage and I get to see it, ride it and just enjoy the whole experience every day! Pure magic!!

Life began at 16 with a second hand Fizzy.
New mates, new places to go.
Everyone has their own favourite Sixteener Special but mine was defiantly the Fizzy.
Summer evenings and weekends were dedicated too new and different place to go and see.
When employment came along the Fizzy made cheap and reliable transport to work.
Even if you moved on to cars at 17 years old, you never forgot the freedom and fun on that little Yamaha FS1E.

My 16 year old self was a very anti social lad on my Fizzy. I had a very naughty 65cc 'big bore' kit with a Micron exhaust and I rode like a muppet filled with that teenage sense of invulnerability. My god it was fun. I have fond memories of the Fizzy unlike the Suzuki 250 that replaced it on my 17th Birthday!

I Had a Fizzie in 1976 and the claim here of 60 mph is very optimistic. I managed 52mph on the clock downhill, lying on the tank. The Suzuki AP50 was slightly faster, again evidenced by a race downhill, in which it slowly pulled ahead. The Honda SS50 was a four stroke and was the slowest of the three. I remember there were also Fantic and Cagiva 50cc mopeds. - Happy days!

You told it exactly like it was. I am 54 now and at 16 being able to buy a used yamaha fs1 brought me so much pleasure, freedom and tecnical knowledge. The knowledge came from it being broken all the time because we made it go faster. I LOVED my fs1. The unexpected thing is that you are clearly in the UK and apparently rules were the same in your country as in mine (The Netherlands) It had to have workable peddles and 49.9 cc was the limit. Thank you for this very nice video about my youth :)

Mine would go 50mph if I laid down on the gas tank and had a slight decent on pavement. It could carry two of us and still do about 35mph. Great little bike. The engine in mine had been freshly rebuilt. It ran perfect. I was 14 when I had this.

We were a bit luckier in France in the mid ‘70s. You could ride a 50cc bike on the streets at 14 years old with only proof of insurance. No license required. At 16 you could ride up to 125cc. License required and at 18 there was no cc limit. Gitane Testi, Kreidler, Derbi, Gilera, Flandria, Beta, BPS, Malaguti, and quite a few more that I can’t remember. Swapping out the stock tiny 14mm carb for a 19mm carb, expansion chambers, sprockets etc. Of course removing the pedals! Damn that was fun times

And keep the stock exhaust with the baffles out. One size bigger pilot jet. A 15 tooth front sprocket. Stick to the 20.1 mix. Oh yes and file the transfer port web to a smooth point. And be extremley careful when filing the top of the exhaust port. Too much can fuck things up. Yes pal. We did aquire mechanical knowledge. And loud is good. Great video bud x

Great video, I started with a Honda SS50 in 1976. It wasn't as quick as the Fizzy but it was cheaper! It got me hooked on biking!
I lost very little money on it when it came to get a 250 when I was 17.
The new mopeds were restricted to 30mph, most people wanted the unrestricted ones! It was fun, but when I first rode my CB250G5 it felt like a race bike after the SS50.
Fizzys are worth a fortune now but it's too small for me now.
My two stroke bike is a Yamaha DT3 250 Enduro, it's more practical and I can ride on a motorway if I need to!

A guy in my class in school had a Garelli Rekord - the lucky swine, and he was a fairly small feller.
He got a genuine 'just over 50' out of that thing - on the flat. And it was swift to get there too. We all envied him.
The Fizzy boys never took him on directly. They all had tales of '50 plus' but none of them really could. Maybe just over 45.
But I'm not mocking - Oh lord no - I had a Honda C50. Oh the shame. But I still loved it.
They were great days to be a teenager the 1970's.

Had an FS1 that went 50 mph back in the days. I had the gas wire rolled around my right thumb (insane). Roads were mostly gravel where I lived and I remember meeting a car in a curve, and the car drove too far on my side. I couldn't complete the turn because of my velocity and rolling gravel, so I had no choice but going straight out in the mud field. Luckily I remained on the seat as the FS1 dug half its front wheel into the mud, otherwise the gas wire would've chopped off my thumb. Ultimately, one day I was caught by a cop and had to strip the engine right on place, miles from home. I'm quite thankful that the story ended like that. :)

Realistically the top speed of a FS1-E was about 45mph. I don't doubt that some lads got up to 55 plus downhill with the wind behind them and optimistically read it as 60. Itwas the media which made that claim when they launched a campaign to have mopeds restricted to 30mph. They were successful and the law was changed. They were restricted to 28mph but the pedals were no linger required. Many young lads got around it because on certain models the restriction could be removed by just cutting a wire in the ignition circuit.

Learnt a lot in the early 80s about getting fizzys to go quite a bit faster than they should, standard barrel ported and bored out to max = 54.3cc, piston to match but fitted with some snipped down Honda 70 rings, engine sprocket up 1 tooth and back sprocket down 4 teeth, exhaust was a home made expansion box, cant remember jet size for carb but it was bigger than standard hence 27/28 to the gallon, not much really for a moped but it won me many 50 pence,s, The one i did the work on was NTB 13M and would pull 62mph on the flat, another i remember was RCK 78? R blue dx model, i remember going in to T & D motorcycles in Preston in 1980 and being quoted £215,85p for a brand new one ,

Had 58 mph on the clock laying on the tank down the steepest hill I could find. I went on to an RD250 and then a GT550. Tried to push an AP50 up to 60 with my 550 and could not get past high 50s until the rider pulled the clutch in. Managed 85 with clutch pulled in. I have a 1000 now so could probably get even more, but I am a bit old for moped pushing now.

My first “real” motorcyclish transport. Bought it new in Montreal in 74 for about $250 hard earned money. This was , again, before the Feds got wind of it and the next year the regulations came fast and furious. But for that year, I used that shiny machine to take me every where there was pavement. It was , by dealers records at the time, the first Yamaha Québécois, that’s what the Provincial government insisted it would be called, sold in Quebec, if not Canada. It was so new , coming from Japan, I couldn’t even get it looked at for maintenance during my time with it( only that summer), no one had even heard of it. But it was a Zipper for sure, I clocked myself along side a big Honda 4 on the road, WOT, on the tank and the biker gave a thumbs up and indicated 45ish mph or 72-73 klms. And it was freedom for a 16 year old teenager, I was the talk of all the cousins ( I’m oldest), I would advise ANYONE wanting to get on a bike, considering the immense power they make today, to start SMALL, like a good used 250-400 cc bike and LEARN defense driving! It’ll save your life.

A variation of this was very common in Sweden baack in the days. Ours was very restricted, 1hp and 30 km/h (19mph) and could be driven at age of 15 without any licence. Removing restrictions and tuning them to go faster was very common but the police was very strict and chased us teens almost to death. They even used helicopter to chase. I got busted a few times and they confiscated the engine parts that was messed with.

I had a Suzuki Hustler 250 lined up to buy in December of '71 and even had my new red licence ( I applied for the licence 4 weeks before my birthday) , I was as sick as a dog when Barbara Castle, the transport minister put the age up to 17 and I had to send it back. I had to buy a 50cc moped instead ! :-(

    • @Enpassantful
      @Enpassantful 3 ปีที่แล้ว

She probably saved your life, a 250 was way too powerful for a learner, I know because I tried a quacker 250. 0 to 60 in about 4 seconds. Imagine a machine like that in the hands of a teenager and a learner to boot. My first bike was a Suzuki TS 100.

@@Enpassantful Yes you maybe right, I did still get my T250J Hustler, but a year later, when I was 17 and I still had to put L plates on, I later had a KH250 Quack, which I took in P/X for a Z650, both great bikes.

Mate had one in yellow with a disc brake. It would do 50mphmon the clock. It would do that almost anywhere and would eventually get there two up as well. Reliable and felt unburstable compared to others.
Fantic GT was the fastest, six speed, constant changing and 60+, clocked by bigger bikes, just achievable!
Suzuki was marginally quicker than FS1E too.
There are a few youtube posts that show speed testing of the sports mopeds, admittedly getting on now and most don't make 50.
