LOVE how Mark Volman jumps into the frame, and Howard Kaylan just keeps on singing! These two have a strong friendship, and it shows…over 50 years later, they remain close.
One of the greatest examples of the perfect pop song: Lyrics, melody, chord progression, harmonies, arrangement and recording. A true '60s California production classic.
@@fshoaps 'It's My Party'-Leslie Gore. Again, the melody, lyrics, arrangement and performance are stunning. The song tells a complete, understandable, and empathic story in 2 minutes and 19 seconds. Produced by Quincy Jones.
It still comes behind most of the songs written, arranged, produced and performed by the man they were attempting to emulate, their friend, Brian Wilson.
It was my favorite song when I was 9 yrs old. Me and my cousin would dance to this song in her bedroom. I still feel happy when I hear this song It's so positive and lifts one's spirits.
I just love the way the singer looks so caught off guard when the backup vocalist comes up on his mic. That's like something I would do with my friends.
Sullivan insisted the vocals were live performances, but by 1967 the instruments were often pre-taped. The drummer isn't doing anything he couldn't do live, but the horn player sure is. Great song. Great band. The Turtles didn't write it, but they get royalties whenever their rendition is used, and the songwriters sure deserve their due.
Howard was only 20 at the time---he looks much older with that thick mustache. I love when Mark steps up and harmonizes with Howard at the same microphone. They all---Al, Johnny, Mark, Howard and Jim---sounded great. I wonder if they had strings and horns when they toured back in the 60s?
I saw Zappa on that tour, and near the end of the show when the drummer switched to those eighth notes leading up to the chorus, the crowd went wild! Beautiful
The first concert i saw was March, 1973 at the Sam Houston Coliseum in Houston, Tx....Alice Cooper's "Billion Dollar Baby" tour headlined with guests Brownsville Station, and Flo and Eddie!
If your 14 like me, and you like 60s rock music, and feel guilty about not being alive in the 60's, not need to be guilty about being born in 2008 because your a legend if you like that music at 14!

I saw Flo and Eddie open for Stephen Stills around 1976. They started off saying "Give us a big round of applause like we were a big deal like Bruce Springsteen!" They sang Suite Judy Blue Eyes with Stills during encore.
I always get a kick out of watching these bands Ad Libbing to their studio soundtracks. Most did such an incredible job. Its especially amusing when they're playing electric guitars with no cords running to the amplifiers, and electric keyboards with no power supplies. 😊😂
This song was played as my husband and I were leaving the church when we got married. We were both over the road truckers and would sing it to each other all of the time.
They perform "She's My Girl" immediately after this and it's a great segment. Howard sings wonderfully and Mark hilariously acts a goof with a violin. Trippy visuals are incorporated into the performance too which was pretty hip for the Ed Sullivan Show at the time! Can't wait to see it on TH-cam!
This was the very first song I played in my first car in March 1967. The car was a Classic 1957 2dr ht. I was a senior in H.S. A dozen famous groups of the 60's turned down Happy Together to record..of course it was a number 1 hit for the Turtles..and the rest of the groups are still to this day kicking themselves in the butt for turning down the song! 😎
There was no MTV etc at that time, and it rare to see these groups on TV. You would only hear them on AM Radio and that was that. This is literally the first time I've seen a recording of them, I never knew what they looked like !
This is a song that always brings me a smile and lifts my mood. Something went really right when this tune was created. Honestly, the lyrics could have been about making a peanut butter sandwich; there's just something extraordinary about the song, not just its sweet and romantic sentiment.
Apparently, the lead singer/writer, Howard Kaylan, sat in a hotel room basically forced by the record company at the time to write another "Happy Together," which he didn't want to do. he just basically, made an inverse version of Happt Together musically. When the one goes up, the other goes down. Etc.
@@eduardo_corrochio "Happy Together" is the song The Turtles are most famous for. Check it out. The writer of the song said he took all the elements of "HT" and just kind of inversed it ...
I think Howard Kaylan is absolutely gorgeous too bad I was only 8 years old when this came out. I grew up listening to all this great music, the best era in music ever and every one was real back then, nothing fake about them. Love these guys!!!!!!
A couple of things to note: 1 This song is about unrequited love for those who didn't know. 2. As it became a #1 single, you'd think that acts were lining up around the block to record it. The fact is no one wanted to, even The Turtles turned it down twice, they relented when they were allowed to rework the arrangement
Gone are days I guess when high quality group harmony (such as this) was the feature. Opened up this window, still mid morning, really improved my mood.
The🌟TURTLES "Happy Together" a treasure Classic. Love this 1960's hit song brought a lot of joy into my life growing up. Their Happy Together Concert Tours are amazing!!!🎶🎶😃
The amazing thing about this video is the drummer has a closed hi-hat set up by his side tom. It's like a proto type remote hi-hat. I've never seen that that long ago. The guy was way ahead of his time. The man's a genius.
Love watching videos of 60's acts all dressed alike, nice boys wearing nice suits,.....now thanks to Tom Hanks all I hear after the songs is " at the end of the song, we are smiling, smiling bowing and running off stage before the applause dies down...."
The Turtles concert was the first that I went to. I was 14, and it was in San Diego. They were perfect in live performance! I was over the moon!! Nothing has compared since and I'm *gasp* 70 now. 😸
Definitely one of the better bands of the late 1960's. The Turtles were on Ed Sullivan twice, both times in 1967. On the earlier show, they performed "Happy Together" (the full version) and "She'd Rather Be with Me" and those videos have been released by Sofa many times in compilations. This footage is from the second show they were on, which I've never seen before. According to an episode guide, they performed "She's My Girl" after this.
The "She's My Girl" performance is good. Like this one, the backing track is played back but the lead vocal is live. They incorporate trippy visuals to go along with the theme of the song, which is neat. Looking forward to seeing it on this channel!
She’s My Girl Should be released then because many people of already seen the first performance of happy together. By the way on their first performance during she’d rather be with me, Al Nichol broke his guitar strap and you could see it toward the end

such a good song. its kinda sad that it's been kinda cheapened by being in so many movies and commercials
Yes!
The exposure keeps it alive. This isn't some Rembrandt hanging in the Louvre.
Nothing "cheap" about people getting paid each time it's played. That's called earning a good living.
I kind of have a different perspective on it. I think it being used so much pays homage and is a testament to its timelessness
Makes the songwriter money.... I think he is OK with that.... more than OK.
I saw The Turtles and Grass Roots in 1988. They were great.
