In Boulder County, Rocky Mountain Search and Rescue says deaths have been almost 15% of their missions this year. That's three times what they've been in recent years.
I wonder if one significant factor in this increase is how people are going out into the wilderness in greater numbers all by themselves. Perhaps the proliferation of cell phones and social media has given many people the false impression that they are not alone and that help, if needed, is easily reachable. So they risk going alone -- which has increased deaths because if something bad _does_ happen in the wilderness, when you're alone, your chances of surviving drop quite significantly.
More people _are_ alone these days, but still want to enjoy the outdoors. It would be interesting to get some numbers on how many S&R's are on lone hikers versus people in groups. Same on people out for half-day or shorter trips versus longer trips. And even though I enjoy roped climbing, scrambling above treeline scares the heck out of me. No traverses here!
People see the news as a movie. They don't realize that's real and can happen to them or their loved ones and friends. They keep themselves underestimating the unforgivable depths of nature and the subtle tricks of the mind and the body. I have been surprised at how many people have died the last two years in nature and after one another comes.
Are we sure there is “no charge” for search and rescue services? When you buy a hunting or fishing license in CO the fee is paid for. If you don’t have a search and rescue fee paid that fee gets slapped on the user who needed to get rescued
And if you need medical care after a rescue operation, doctors will first make a solvency diagnosis and then decide whether to create a treatment plan or a hospice plan.
I'm not surprised about the trail runners getting themselves into a pickle. I see a lot of you tube videos of people running in the mountains with NOTHING. No backpack or supplies or warm clothing, matches, food etc. How are you going to survive if you break your ankle??? Preposterous. I always run with a backpack with emergency stuff, extra hydration, matches etc. Think about what could go wrong, and then try and mitigate those dangers.
You're smart and have common sense, which unfortunately quite a few people don't have, along with arrogance, ignorance, overconfidence, and complacency. Never assume everything will be alright, especially the weather
The rescues are not free... Anyone who has ever purchased and hunting or fishing license in Colorado in the last several decades has to foot the bill for them. You're welcome.
too many inexperienced influencers coming out here unprepared all for a thumbs up.. they are sharing their inexperience with others and those other inexperienced people are coming out here unprepared and getting hurt.. i see it everyday..
The people moving to CO are by and large upper class people who think they have all of life's answers. So often they seem to consider themselves mountain experts after simply making the decision to move here. Being an actual expert requires experience...
Sorry to hear , I used to roam the wonderful Flatirons also , where flat meets slope . BTW - Gravity is a “law” - truth hurts , no SCOTUS “immunity “ in the mountains ladies and gents . can’t fix stupid , nor disrespect [- all Hail Derek Hersey who downclimbed the diamond of Longs Peak there ] - maybe a “carte niege “ would pay for some chopper fuel - no charge for Colorado rescues ???? But my knees feel weak ?
If you’re a Native of Colorado or even a longtime resident then you’re well aware of the population growth over the years. With the explosion of and continued influx of people into our state more people are finding their way into our mountains. Sadly the greater number of these people lack any kind of training, experience or skills to be transversing peaks. And those who go on a day hike are simply not educated in safe hiking practices, and ignore simple rules to keep the alive. There needs to be a state program in place to help curb these deaths by offering classes, training, and certification’s. Mandatory classes for those who want to transverse our peaks.
It would make no difference. There are countless people who already break laws on the trails so adding more laws would make no difference. Colorado is so completely ineffective at enforcing laws that the rich transplants think they have free reign and can do whatever they please.
People overestimate their capabilities and bite off more than they chew. They also just make stupid choices. Your ego is not your amigo.
0:46 a man must know his limitations. 0:49
Some people just want to die outside. You don’t get it

There are a lot of people who have no business being in the mountains. Especially in Colorado
WE ❤ OUR ROCKY MOUTAIN SAR❤❤❤THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO!😊

I live in one of Colorado's more popular resort towns. The ignorance and stupidity of visitors and covid transplates is astounding !
This guy was a Colorado native. All the intelligent people have left Colorado. LOL
Were you born there?
The only real “natives “ are the Ute Apache and arapahoe and Cheyenne tribes . Not you anglos
This will always happen when ambition exceeds skill set.
Having watched a bunch of videos about hiking tragedies, the recurring issue is that people go out alone. Stupid.

Do some research. It took me three minutes to find that your information is almost entirely wrong.
If your rescue requires helicopter or ambulance you or your insurance is paying
And if you need medical care after a rescue operation, doctors will first make a solvency diagnosis and then decide whether to create a treatment plan or a hospice plan.
@@markon6909 Emergency rooms are required to provide treatment, irrespective of one's ability to pay.
Buy a CORSAR card! It’s not expensive and these guys are volunteers (many of them) so do your part!
I would give 10 thumbs up if I could!

See the same in White mountains in New Hampshire- crazy.
I have been preaching this to people, especially in winter to early summer. People lack any forethought, I guess.
You come to a cliff and your cell phone app tells you to continue in that direction...so you do.
Natural selection. Nothing anyone can do...
Come to our state and overload the trails and enjoy our beautiful vistas. Wtf
It's more like "come to Colorado because there are jobs and functional government." The outdoors are just a bonus.
You can thank Denver for that lol a rise in deaths goes hand in hand with a drop in intelligence and common sense
The rescues are free, but you still need to buy a COSAR card from the state so that these groups and their volunteer rescuers can get reimbursed!
The rescues are not free... Anyone who has ever purchased and hunting or fishing license in Colorado in the last several decades has to foot the bill for them. You're welcome.
Acceptable. Hike at your own risk. Do not expect to be saved in the back country. Be prepared. Be aware.

Mountain lions love runners !
JA yet?

They hiring?
Please the last thing anybody wants is more goverment red tape and odious regulations when you step out your door
Oh, right, the govt that protects the land from mineral extraction and poisoning.

As a native, I enjoy the Darwinism of the day. Zeitgeist!
"finding their way into our mountains" lol they are not your mountains :) They are everyone's mountains for everyone to enjoy.
You don’t own the state. Calm down there.
Bet this guy has a "native" sticker on his car. lol
More tourists=more accidents. It's a numbers game. Also, I see people heading into the woods with nothing but a phone and a water bottle.
It continues to amaze me that colorado does not require a permit to climb. Part of the permit process is a basic vetting of skills and equipment.

@ maybe maybe not but doing nothing will get the same results.
Selfie sickness.
Covid scare?
That gross american food just wont cut it
