Helping others adds incredible value to your life and Utah maintains a super healthy relationship volunteerism. Make this type of work a little safer for everyone by doing the following:
    1. Let folks know exactly where you are going AND who to contact if you don't show up. (Local County Sheriff?)
    2. Bring EXTRA food, water, a headlamp, lighter, mylar blankets.......
    3. Stay together whenever possible.
    4. Be able to "signal" air support in remote areas. Wear bright colors, bring a mirror, make a fire/smoke (if safe).
    * Remember, you may encounter someone needing assistance. If you are delayed helping someone, you will have the essentials, plus some for them.

We moved here a few years ago, and Utah is the most beautiful yet deadly place to play. Desolate desert, high altitude mountains, cold, fast water. It's absolutely serious and demands discipline. Thank you All first responders and PBS Utah for this info.✌️🇺🇲

You NEVER hike alone. NEVER ski alone in the back country.

Such a sad story that young man losing his life, that family losing their loved one. I hope his wife carried their 2nd child to full term and will share fond/happy memories of her husband to that child, to both children. Condolences to all concerned. SAR's team one and all you do and did an amazing job. Sadly you cant save everyone and you shouldn't judge yourselves, you are all outstanding. You put your own lives on the line too sometimes.. Best wishes from Western Australia....my heart is aching...
To Victoria you are one lucky lady!! You did all the right things and still things went wrong.. you couldn't help that, nobody goes out for a walk thinking they will get lost, but you had the presence of mind to leave a message. You told that stupid motel clerk (who I do hope doesn't still have a job there) to get help if you didn't come back by dark. Its not like every other guest says the same thing to him.. all he had to do is check on one guest!! He stuffed up in a major way, you could have lost your leg, you could have died. You didn't.. well done you. The rescuers didn't give you a future they gave you life.. can't get better than that.. worth writing a book.:)
To the rescuers...maybe a lesson learnt to add to your training to your members/helicopter pilots etc too that heat seeking doesn't necessarily work on cold bodies.. doesn't mean they aren't alive.. I hope you took that on board.. You all do an awesome job.. sometimes it just takes a little longer.
So sorry that little boy in the river wasn't found.. love to his family..
    Apologies for long comment.

Just amazing. I live in the black hills and have considered joining search rescue here. But I just don’t have the ability to be available 24/7 because of the business I own. It’s so incredible so many people can and do.

Volunteer SAR is much like volunteer Fire fighters, Paramedics/EMT's; just different types of emergency's requiring different types of skills. Many are "unpaid professionals" going into what many others can't, for the same reasons that other volunteer first responders join for - to help those who need it most when those resources are required. Normal hobbies just don't work for us...
@27:51 You all did everything you possibly could at the time! Let that bring you peace, not what you learned after the fact and all the the coulda shoulda wouldas... That was a terrible situation from the get go. You still did something that so many wouldn't dare attempt.

If someone heads out unprepared and without emergency contact means and self care. THey should pay for the rescue.
