Nice, JefF--"The Man in the Pit" From one of the ones that sat next to you, in those days (Not until '71), on my 5'9" x 21" Ben Ferris, then a 5' 3" x 21" Larry Duff "HONER" 'then my 5' 6" x 22" Mikey "Whitey" Thornton-Jim Hennessey glassed Fish..but still b4 may others "converted" Not too long after Stevie busted out the Fish, there were Several Good Local Shapers getting into then..Ben "ASYM" Ferris, Mikey Thornton, Jon "Da Kid" Riddle, Harry "Skip" Frye, Louis Greco, Robert Keinholz, "Figures a San Diego Boy would take my stinger and use it on a Fish--Ha Ha Ha--Looks Good..like the "Sculptured Bottom"..Light, too"..His son (About 14-16) wanted to try it, but Both had surfed for Hours W/ No Breakfast & Were Starving////Made plans to see them the next day--But OB//Cliffs were firing & Never made it back! I remember when Twinnies" made their resurgence and the "Death of the Fish" was being claimed!! The Hardcore Fish Riders NEVER GAVE THEM UP----and Now are the Proven Design We always knew they were//are! LONG LIVE THE FISH ...and Long Live Jeff Ching....Now a FISHING// Snowboarding Fly Tying Legend!! An "Artesan" in many Ways!! And a Darn Good Cook/ Crudo Chef!! CHEERS, JEFF and to about 50yrs. of "Friendship" and Sharing Those Roots! Who''d of Thought it would have Ever gotten this Huge & Spread so Far!----We were just happy to be playing in our own back yard with such incredible "TOYS"!
Some of the most radical surfing took place at that particular time, and place. The Classic Fish was refined by a crew of 5-8 truly hard-core players. They shaped the boards. The atmosphere was very creative, so guys were putting in the time to further refine the fish, and then go rip the place apart.
