The reactions our pets are having from these flea/tick medications is heartbreaking!
The vet sent us home from our first appointment, for our 4 month old rescue, with a "welcome bag" with a free toothbrush, a free toothpaste sample, and a free simparico trio sample. 10 days after the simparico trio our Lily began waking up 3-5 times a night with what we thought were vivid night terrors. Our vet prescribed us benedryl to help her sleep, then rimadyl in case she was in pain, then trazodone for if it was anxiety, none of which fixed the nightmares. Finally they started happening in the evening while Lily was sleeping on the couch and we could see her reaction when she woke up. We realized she had a physical response as well. Loss of balance while trying to sit up and star gazing (neck goes back and looks at the ceiling), in addition to the immense fear response crying and yelping. We immediately reached out to an emergency vet clinic (not our primary vet) and they told us to bring her in right away as she was likely suffering from complex partial seizures.
3 nights in the ICU later, after multiple attempted discharges and readmissions through the ER, Lily has finally just made it through her first night back home with us seizure-free after being put on both Keppra and Phenobarbital. We're praying Lily continues to respond positively to the medication and doesn't go back to nightly cluser seizures.
During the day and when not sleeping, Lily's the most perfect, beautiful puppy. This whole thing is BEYOND heartbreaking. I need to remember to thank my vet for the "welcome bag". 😭

Man, I’ll be reading up on potential side effects for myself and constantly see wild ones even risk of death and I’ll generally shrug and take the medication but soon as I read risk of seizures for my dog I’m feeling nervous, my palms are sweaty, my heart rates up, I have a lump in my throat. I know the risk is low but I definitely care more about the wellbeing of this little furball more than I do just about anything.

I'm sorry to hear also. We unknowingly allowed our vet to give this pesticide to our adult male cocker and for the past 3 weeks he has been dealing with neurological issues, tremors, some mornings he cant even get up. Cant stand steady long enough to pee without falling over, walks like hes drunk, it's so sad to see our little guy suffer when before he was extremely mobile, playful, and energetic. Now he sleeps 90% of the day and needs carried around 75% of the time cause his back legs are like jello.

@@sarahtara5546 Our cocker seems to get relapses every 3-4 weeks. Last week he wouldnt use his back right leg at all. Anytime he moved he held it as if it was broken or hurt. You could touch it, pinch it, move it, whatever when he was laying but when he got up to go anywhere he held it up. It has to be causing neurological problems since it apparent that it's not hurt, hes just having issues making the mind muscle connection. We're praying it fades but time will tell. He is moving around fine again but we're dreading the next episode. We gave him the 3mos dose which is supposedly time released so it makes perfect sense that once every 3-4 weeks it releases and causes problems. On a good note it appears the side effects are getting slightly less severe. Probably a result of the drug losing it potency towards the end if the 3months but its BS that it's considered acceptable by any standards regardless of how small of a percentage of animals have these reactions!

I took my 5 year old shiba inu who has a history of seizures to the vet for the first time in the place we recently moved to. The same day they gave me Bravecto because the fleas and ticks in my area are worse than what we were used to. The same day I gave it to my dog and less than 10 hours later he had 2 seizures within 15 minutes. The first was mild the second was severe. It lasted for around 5-6 minutes. I rushed him to the animal hospital and explained what happened and they immediately said Bravecto was probably the cause and he should never have been given it. I forgive the vet, recalling how the vet visit went I can see where the mistake was made and I’m sure no one meant to hurt my dog and I’m sure they are good people. One good thing about this particular episode was that I got more answers from the seizure than questions, which is a first. I pray that I’m right and my dog and I don’t get slapped in the face by fate but I now feel more confident that the treatments I was using for him were working (for reference he’s had 6 seizures since he was 3 and the last one before this was a year ago and I had started the new treatment) and that this seizure had a cause, so now I just have to really watch the medications that I give him and continue with the treatments. He made a full recovery after spending the night at the hospital and I really hope this comment helps any other pet owners in any way. The treatment that worked best is CBD, not that I’m a weed advocate or anything but it just worked best for my dog. Thank you for reading all the way to the end and I hope all your pets overcome their medical issues that brought you to this video!

@@richstevens5727 G_d bless you and your family. I really hope he recovers fast. From what I understand, we’re a really small percentage of people affect by this. Maybe bravecto works, just needs more restrictions. My heart and prayers are with you. If it’s problems with the nervous system then I definitely recommend finding a legitimate bottle of legal CBD for dogs and adding it to a treat ASAP! From my understanding, CBD calms the nervous system and raises the threshold for seizures and other issues. I get my bottles from a friend in Las Vegas, it’s pretty expensive but I know that the research was legal and legit. Sincerely wish you the best of luck!

Havent seen another since. But I'd rather bathe him in lemon juice and tea tree oil everyday than see him go through what hes experiencing currently.

I was cleaning up some old photos and videos on my phone and came across the videos I took of him while he was going through it. As much as I'd love to erase those memories of watching him suffer like he did, I decided to keep the videos as proof and a reminder in case they ever need to be referenced. I remember telling my wife during all of it that she needs to mentally prepare herself for him to pass. As hard as it is to do. I stayed hopeful throughout but I've had well over a dozen dogs in my life ( 90% rescue so they havent all been puppies) and at one point 4 in total in the household and with all the typical issues one can expect from any dog this was BY FAR the worst! It was drawn out over months with relapses. We thought he was recovering 3-4 different times and due to the "slow release" every 3 weeks on the dot he'd wake up on that morning right back to where he was 3 weeks prior. Extremely lethargic, seemed very cloudy minded, confused, with almost no control over his hind legs.

Hello, my dog has a history of epilepsy but nothing super concerning, maybe one every few month. 2 weeks ago he took Bravecto as prescribed by his vet because we noticed some fleas. He began having cluster seizures, 9 seizures in a couple of days, and had to be hospitalized to stop them. Thankfully he has not had any more in the last 3 days since he left the hospital. He’s currently on medication which he started this week and being monitored. I am certain that it was the Brevecto that caused this sudden change. Can this continue affecting him in the long rung or did his body simply have a reaction and is now calming down? Also, is there any form of detox or vitamins that can help him metabolize the Bravecto faster and remove it form his system? Any help is greatly appreciated. I don’t understand how the vet prescribed this to us knowing the dangers and pre-existing condition. Thank you!!

From the data sheet: Adverse reactions
Mild and transient gastrointestinal effects such as diarrhoea, vomiting, inappetence, and drooling were commonly observed in clinical trials (1.6% of treated dogs).
Lethargy, muscle tremor, ataxia and convulsions have been reported very rarely in spontaneous reports.
Most reported adverse reactions were self-limiting and of short duration.
The frequency of adverse reactions is defined using the following convention:

Is the risk higher for a dog in kidney failure? Because I would imagine it most definitely would be. I hate not trusting the vet, and I try to be rational and not caught up in anecdotal stories, because it's true anything has the potential for side effects, but I can't help but wonder about a product that is an insecticide that is supposed to last three months being given to a dog whose kidneys are barely functioning. It's worth mentioning I believe that I can't use topical treatments like a flea collar or drops because I administer subcutaneous fluids ever other night, and that's not a good idea either. I don't want him to suffer with pests because he still has a solid quality of life despite his condition, but I also don't know if the risk is worth it. It just seems like such a harsh way to take care of the problem and I really don't want any more damage done to his kidneys when he seems like he has some time left.

You're right that some drugs are best to either avoid if there is kidney failure present, and others where the dose needs to be reduced. Bravecto is eliminated from the body in the feces and so kidney failure should not affect how it is handled by the body. I can't find anything to suggest that there is a higher risk in dogs with kidney failure but as for whetehr you should use it, I would recommend talking to your vet who will best know the condition of your dog's kidneys and the risk of the various parasites it protects against. I too would be erring on the side of caution when it comes to giving a product that lasts so long when there are likely to be equally effective alternatives available

I’m new to the channel, doc. Hoping you’ll respond. I think hearing this reports of side effects, maybe I should go for topical spot on solution. Bravecto now has a topical or Spot-on version, which they advertise to be effective for 6 months for fleas and ticks. What are your thoughts on this doc, will that spot on really last 6 months even after repeated baths? Thanks

    • @OurPetsHealth
      @OurPetsHealth  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

as far as side effects go then I imagine they will both be similar (and rare). As far as duration of action, if applied as directed and all instructions followed then you can be confident it will work as advertised

Is there a single medication me out there that some humans or animals would not have a bad even fatal reaction to? Some people can't take penicillin but would you ban that. If you are giving medicine to the dog the first time why are people not giving it a third or half dosage to see how it reacts & if it has a bad reaction find an alternative or if no problem carry on using. I live in Thailand & have seen the misery & death in dogs incaused by fleas & ticks pumping the blood parasites into them. I got 7 dogs with a total weight of about 140 Kg & I cut up 2 x 40 to 56 Kg dog Bravecto tablets which should be for 80 to 112 Kg of dog & give it them so they all get a lower than recommended dose but it still works great & keeps them flea & tick free for 3 months. I also give the Ivermetcin every month but again there are breeds like collies & sheep dogs that are not tolerant. There is a tolerance test but it is not available in Thailand & there is no antidote but charcoal will absorb anything still in the stomach. First time using on a dog I give them half of the dose & have a pack of charcoal tablets ready. If OK after 4 hours I give the other half of the dose. You have to check the dog has no heart worm before you give Ivermetcin & if it has get it clear using other medications. I never had a problem giving my dogs Ivermetcin or Bravecto & find they are a great combination. Ivermetcin prevents heart worms, mange, round worms, hook worms, blood parasites & mites but not effective against fleas & ticks but Bravecto is the most effective stuff against them I ever used. Remember like people all dogs are not the same. What works for most might not work for all but those it don't work for have alternatives.

While the chew and spot on are licensed for pups older than 8 weeks, I wouldn't generally recommend a long acting medication such as bravecto in young growing dogs. Mainly because as they grow they may jump into a different weight and so dose category making the treatment less reliable.
