I was in that audience. I’m from IL and decided to visit her hometown for this show. when I left the stadium I remember taking a deep breath and exhaled looking up at the stars. for me this show on that particular night will always be a reminder that that world would drastically change a month later.

Madonna was a Punk Rocker before she was a Pop star, so in a way this concert brings her back to those punk roots before she became famous as a solo artist. This was my first Madonna concert, and I was blown away by the artistry and level of performance not only by Madonna, but by her backup dancers. When I heard she would be in the Bay Area, I thought 'Why not see this legendary performer sing her greatest hits.' But the show was anything but a greatest hit tour. Her new music was like nothing she had ever done before and the concert came to be one of her best, imv. After performing in the Bay Area, she went to L.A. and performed a show or two -- then 9-11 happened. That concert and historical events are seared in my mind.

Fun facts. Madonna forced all crew to shave their heads to fit the punk theme including Niki and Donna (who cried when she got the news), Niki pushed back and said she could pull off a Mohawk without cutting her hair until Madonna eventually relented and Niki came to Donna's defence.
Also Guy Ritchie played the role of the lost technician on one or few of the venues after Beautiful Stranger.
This was the first concert DVD I ever bought

This was the first Madonna tour I was old enough to go to, so it will always hold a special place in my bank of core memories. I was in the 9th row, and it was surreal seeing her remarkable beauty in real life. I was in awe of her creativity and theatrical presence on a stage. I was completely addicted to her after that.

This first section is called Neo-Punk (Water). This is how you open a tour. The excitement, the elements and song chosen were all brilliant to get the perfect build up. A great representation of the Ray of Light album.

I find it very interesting that she produced such aggressive work during what is often thought to be the happiest time in a woman's life (new mother and newlywed)

    • @TatoMQZD

A lot of press critiziced Madonna back in the day because she was promoting her most "spiritual and reflexive" albums with such an aggresive and even hostile show. I think that's a great contradiction that works so well with Madonna, because she also called herself several times "a walking contradiction".

You hit the nail on the head. It’s so hard thru the eras to believe it’s the same person. She transforms herself so much. A lot of people don’t give her credit as being such an artist. She is creating pop art culture. The way Andy Warhol, Keith haring, etc did.

Awesome!! We have reached Drowned World!!! Seven years since her last tour, but I had to wait 10. As I said, previously, she did not tour in Toronto. This tour kicked off in Europe, and then as it got to America, 9 11 happened. Perhaps the reason why dates were not added where I live. So sad I missed this. Enjoy the last tour with Niki and Donna, as this is their finale. The opening of this show is as subtle as I have ever seen. Future tours have such dramatic openings, and the anticipation is full on. Wait till you see her perform Substitute for Love on her Confessions Tour!

For me this was the first live concert by Madonna I ever saw! It was the last concert in Paris, in June 2001. I bought my ticket just three weeks before when they released a small number of tickets for all Paris shows, so it was a hectic time for me when I realized that I got my ticket and that I´d had to start to arrange a travel to Paris, France :D
I had made a black t-shirt with "Lucky Star" written in rhinestones, as she had that fashion craze with these t-shirts with "Kylie" and "Britneys" etc. names on them. And I remember how my t-shirt shined on the sunlight as it was a hot and a sunny day in Paris. I found my way to my seats, and I was sooooo surprised to find out that the section was stage left and my seat was in the 5th row from the stage!!!! So I saw EVERYTHING up and close

I was at this concert. It was the first concert that I took my current bff of over 20 yrs. She's been to every Madonna concert that I have attended since. I remember her being in awe. I was happy that I had just opened up a whole new world for her. Lol. I loved all her signature moves; the head/hair flipping, the shimmying, the little skip dance, the guitar playing, and, especially when she calls her fans mother fkrs. I can not tell you how many arguments I have had online about what Madonna calls her fans. A lot of the younger people try to tell me it's Rebel Hearts or Madonsters. Im like, WHAT!!!??? NO!!! ABSOLUTELY NOT! We are and always have been Mother fkrs Lol. I know, It's dumb, but I get so angry about it 😆

This was my first ever tour, I went to the shows in Milan and Paris and It was an out of body experience! I really thought I was never going to see her live and in the end I went to all the tours since and I saw her more than 25 times at this point! I know some fans don’t like this tour because it was too dark and with very few hits from the past. But it’s the reason I love it! Also both Ray Of Light and Music were HUGE in Europe so it WAS actually a greatest hits tour! And get ready for part two, it’s going to blow your minds! It’s really theater in an arena. Awesome start! I forget how great this particular tour is, being she has so many great moments regarding her tours. I remember attending two shows in Florida and flabbergasted by some who complained that she didn't focus more on the hits. I get it! It was 8 years since her last tour, but she had done so much since then. She even had a turning point in her life and career since.. with the birth of her child, EVITA and the album RAY OF LIGHT. She had three albums to cover at this point. Looking back, I wouldn't ask her to change a thing. She still brought in a a couple classics, but the focus was her last several albums since she tours. There was so much content and hits since.
And I noticed you gals noticed "Rock God" the guitarist. He was her guitar teacher who she brought on the David Letterman Show you reacted to. He ended up being her guitarist up until her last two tours Madame X and Celebration Tour. He was instrumental to her learning the guitar again. While any guitar expert would rip her to shreds in how she plays, she definitely learned enough to least look like she could rock out with the best. But what was cool, DWT was our first glimpse of her every playing an instrument on tour or in her entire career. Of course, she started out learning how to play guitar and drums back in the early days, but it is only at this time she embraced learning to play the guitar and offered another extension to being a performance artist. Some will criticize her playing, but she's learned enough to play well enough to entertain the masses. But let's remember it's just one of many stage presentations she brings to her concerts these days.
The next part of your reaction journey will be less ROCK, but very theatrical! I can't wait to see your reaction! Thanks!!

Monte Pittman (wearing that black “Rock God” t-shirt) was a former member of heavy metal rock band Prong-playing the guitar and some vocals. Madonna met him in 1999, started relearning how to play the guitar with him as teacher in 2000, and he ended up becoming her main guitarist for most of her tours starting here in DWT. She would play acoustic and electric guitar from here on. She’s awesome when she dials up her rock star artistry in many of her following tours beginning with DWT.

The element of violence in this tour was something that her brother Christophe Cicconne also points out in his tell-all memoir book about Madonna. This was the first tour in which he was no longer involved as her creative partner following a fallout between them. He wrote about how shocked he was when he first saw the concert, and how he saw it as a result of Guy Ritchie’s influence on her.

You should listen to the intro again, BEFORE the first performance ("Drowned World/Substitute for Love") properly starts, when the anticipation is building up - how brilliant, it's a compilation of elements of so many songs, you can hear excerpts of "Don't Tell Me", "Ray of Light", "Music", "Impressive Instant", "Human Nature", "Drowned World/Substitute for Love", and also "Mer Girl" (this one is actually impossible for you to notice because you haven't heard the album version), and maybe "Frozen" too - just unspeakably hypnotizing, utterly mesmerizing.

This was my first Madonna concert! I had to drive to San Francisco from Portland because there were no Portland or Seattle dates. Hearing the roar of the crowd when the lights went down is still one of the most incredible and electric things I’ve ever heard in my life. I still think about it. I had taken my wife at the time, who was only familiar with her music through being married to me and not really “getting it”, and after the show was over she said “that was the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen.”

Peak Madonna! Madonna on top of the world artistically, professionally and personally. Gorgeous, in perfect shape and voice, and more confident than ever before. It is a sight to behold! The perfect synchronicity of all her ambitions and dreams. Considering her modest beginnings, it is wonderment and joy for me that this waif of a girl kept her promise to Dick Clark and actually did rule the world as the most influential female performer ever. So enjoyed the video!

Love this tour and your reactions ! I only just found out ,this weekend actually, that candy perfume girl was apparently written about her friend who was a drug user and died of aids, I’m unsure when this was but would possible fit the presentation of this song here ?.. this was also the first time Madonna had toured without her brother Chris who, as I’m sure you know was instrumental in staging and of course chief dresser to Madonna. I remember reading in his tell all book how unsatisfied he was with how this tour turned out but don’t think he was in any way instruments but think they must have colluded on ideas for this show at some point before they parted company for good. He noted that an idea for a geisha style walk was perfected and the use of a tree wasn’t to his taste - all coming up very soon ! Can’t wait !!

I had bought tickes for September 11th. and 13th.
Unfortunately that big tragedy happened and sadly and understandable she postponed. I thought she was gonna cancel the rest of the shows (only 3 left).
The show for the 13th, was a somber one. We were nervous, but excited to see her. She broke down and made us all cry. She changed some parts of the show for it not to be so violent.

Just like Madonna herself, this tour marked a further progressive and aggressive Madonna in vision, presentation and style. This was edgier than the previous tours and it was state of the art, sound and set. This may very well have been the tour that started all the huge LED screens as moving art. Was lucky to catch this for her Labor Day weekend 2 night stop in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

This was the concert she wanted to do in late 1999 to welcome the new millennium with focus on her 1998 Ray Of Light album-but her plan fell through and it got pushed to 2001.
Spectacular staging which is state-of-the art high tech and that overhead canopy with blinking lights reminded me of a smaller version of the alien mothership on Close Encounters of the Third Kind-that just landed on earth bringing back Madonna as she appeared amidst that billowing smoke-eerily similar to her staging of Nothing Really Matters in her 2023/24 Celebration Tour. This gave an otherworldly vibe. This DWT concert in Detroit was on August 26. It’s uncanny that her opening song for this tour with Drowned World/Substitute for Love-since 2 weeks later came the 9/11 attacks in NYC and DC that really upended the world as we know it.
I luv that she opened where she and her ensemble appeared with a punk look, swagger and attitude-harking back to her hard rock roots. This was like a big f/u to her detractors who probably thought that after the harsh backlash they gave her from her Erotica/Sex book era-Madonna was chastised, laid low for good. But here she is, as fierce and in your face-coming back with a vengeance.
    Really enjoyed your reaction here.❤😊

That first guy that appears at the very beginning is Stuart Price. Remember his name cause he’s going to take a much bigger role in Madonna’s history. He’s this tour’s music director and he’s going to be for the next two ones, as well as he’s going to be the main producer in Confessions on a Dance Floor. Also, if you’re wishing for an acoustic concert, wait until you get to 2003! It was amazing in person, but they didn’t do her hair or makeup that great at the recorded show we got, unfortunately. It was too dark for me and a little too Tori Amos for me, but most fans love it. I do love this tour, even though I sort of miss the smiling having fun Madonna from the Girlie Show and before. She seems a bit nervous on this tour. Even in her movements she seems a little less free. I call it the Ritchie effect. Those bondage trousers have extra meaning to me regarding that man. Fear not, From Confessions onwards SHE IS OVER THE MOON on stage, and back to dancing like the universe is watching rather than her husband.
