    Great ideas as always - I never would have thought to try just one speedlite behind the subject and using 3 bounceboards - Ive been so used to lighting with umbrellas, softboxes from the front - Ill give this a try tomorrow with the shoot im on see how it works out !
    Update: I tried this out in todays model shoot and it does work out nice - its like a summers day style of light in my home studio - I put the light behind the model and above a background as I dont have a clean clear space/wall, and this worked nicely! Cano post a pic or two or even the BTS video I created.

    Hey, I’m using b10 and b10 plus but for some studio lighting setup I need continuous lights which modeling light on b10 and b10plus is not enough powerful specially for using for recording video! What’s solution if I don’t want to go for another brand to use LED lights? Thank you

    Hello Daniel. I follow you from the City of Mexicali, Baja California. Mexico.
    With the topic of the pandemic I have given myself the task of learning from home because during all this time I was working from home and I took the opportunity to continue learning and training in learning how to use the flash and I really liked the work you do and how you spread it. In fact, I like it more when you do it from your studio and not so much from the Adorama studio, I think that in some way I don't like it due to the fact that it is a small space and in your studio there is more breadth and possibilities of handling equipment. I really appreciate being able to live in times when technology allows us to learn at a distance. Greetings to you and your beautiful model Marisa.

    The overhead reflector acted a a gobo to eliminate lens flare from the flash. Cheapskate me would have used wax paper or drafting velum instead of a gel.

    This would work with a single $100 speed light, but you have to have $1600 worth of C-stands.

    • @TMM6900
      @TMM6900 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      C stands are so useful though

  • @kmorrocco
    @kmorrocco 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great video. What about the photographers that don’t have 4 or 5 light stands, reflectors, and the room to set all that stuff up. Plus what’s easy for you isn’t easy for others. Anything that requires all that explanation can’t be easy. But still, the video was informative. Must be nice to have all that stuff. But if I could afford all that stuff, I’d buy a better flash.

      I get hung up on gear, but it's not that important. Photography is less about following recipes and more about learning how to shape the ingredients you have. You always need to improvise and use the things you do have. C Stands are nice to have, but most of the time a simple $20 folding light stand will do what you need. I've attached a cold shoe to an a-clamp and hung a speed light when I didn't have appropriate stands.

    • @kmorrocco
      @kmorrocco 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply Brian. I tried something once that worked pretty good. I got a white Lamp Shade. Covered the top with white paper. Rigged the flash into the lampshade and put the whole shootin’ match on top of one of those 20$ stands. Remote fired the flash. It actually worked pretty damn good. Attached the flash and shade to the light stand the first time with the Handy Mans Secret Weapon, Duct Tape. Second time with wide elastic rubber bands. Less messy. SUbject was near a corner in an off white room. Soft light. And since I took the photo, I thought it turned out really nice. So did the subject. Everyone was happy. That’s what it’s all about.

      Between Daniel's back and Marisa's is less than 10 feet (~3m) and the "set" is less than 7 feet (~2.1m) wide. So you need a room slightly bigger to make this setup work. While Daniel uses an "expensive" Profoto (that price might buy you 3 to 6 cheaper Chinese branded ones) speedlight, the learning moment is not about this expensive piece of gear. You can make this same setup with cheaper Nikon or Canon speedlights, or dead cheap 3rd party ones. And the "expensive" Mathews or comparable "C-stand" light stands that Daniel uses are extremely sturdy and reliable, but could be replaced by very cheap and light ones. Altogether the whole point is to demonstrate what you can do with a single flash. The Profoto A1 is not particularly powerful but is part of a professional ecosystem - as long as you are not invested in that ecosystem, cheaper is equally good in a similar lighting setup. The reflectors are DIY panels (Daniel and Seth call them the "Brooklyn" reflector after a NY neighborhood that traditionally has been poor and depended a lot on the simplest DIY, I guess). Or, if you replace the essential "studio" kit used here by cheaper, you have a really affordable beginner's setup. As there's only direct light from behind on the model, the reflected light on Marisa is very diffuse and soft. It's a really clever setup that illustrates Daniel's deep understanding of what can be done. Does MacGyver still mean something today? That's what this is.
