@@DrHannibal1105 Baresi missed almost the whole tournament due to injury, he only played 2 group matches and the final. Cannavaro played the whole 690 minutes only conceding 2 goals and not recieving a single card

I am an Italian living my whole life in Germany, I was 16 watching this with all my german friends.
In the 118 Minute they said they wanted to go smoke a cigarette before the penalties and I went with them. I forgot my pack of smokes at my seat near theTV and went back when the goal happened. I screamed so loud out of my lungs and they all ran back into the room devastated and they couldnt believe it. This was one of the best days of my life and I will never forget it.

The final entertaining as well, but the semi final had everything, except a headbutt.
Of course. Italy played this unreal game with Germany for 120 minutes, had one less day than France to recover before Final, and again, went to overtime. While Italy played better than France during regular tome (a generous penalty for France, immediate tie by Materazzi, a post from Toni that would have ended the game), but they paid this effort in overtime. The last 10 minute, Italy couldn't even run anymore, they were physically finshed. Thankfully, they had more nervous reserves than France and won on penalties. While France's captain literally lost his head, Cannavaro stood like an heroic statue in the midle of the field transmitting confidence and trust to his teammates, who delivered 5 out of 5 penalties. The level of intensity, passion and excitement was unbelievable in this match. All awake well into midnight in India, Buffon's saves were giving us heart attacks and finally Grosso's goal erupted a volcano.
Le 8 year old me was busy watching Dhoni hitting sixes against WI in tests at 2am, After 4 years in 2010 i realised what have i missed.

Watching this on well past midnight i remember in Pakistan and crying my heart out after seeing Germany crashing out. Just goes to show how football is such a global sport. There really is nothing like it.

The Italian defence was so solid. I was only able to see highlights. Now that I'm able to see the full game, I just realised how much of an obstacle Italy was that year. This team was a walking fortress.

Fully agree. The team in 1990 was absolutely superior to any other team. Italy was extremely unlucky with Argentina on penalties, and the facto, in the field won every single match (besides the aforementioned 1-1 that led to penalties). Baggio, Maldini, Baresi and others deserved at least one World Cup. It's insane to think these football icons did not lift one.

@Dhi Mancini I don't think so, Italy ruled the match, just look the ball possess statistics (ita: 58% ger:42%) and the shots on target rate (ita:11 ger:6). I remember that the only think that worried me during this match were penalties, but in the regular time I never thought that Germany could win this match. Just look at Gilardino opportunity in the extra-time.

I am a diehard Germany fan. This game here sums up my childhood.I still remember where i was while watching this game. back then i was 12 years old and i was blinded by my love for Germany. watching this 16 years later made me realize how special that game was and how much i loved that team. But now all i can think of is how complete and how well-assembled this Italian team is. A real joy to watch them play. This team played football the right way. Props to totti for being that efficient on the grandest stage. Man of the match for me
As an Italian those are lovely words! I have been lucky enough to have watched many Germany vs. Italy battles and they always bring out the best in both our countries. There is a reason they are they most decorated european national teams. Lets hope we get a couple more, cause coming up against you guys is scary and exciting at the same time.

I say became because of how he played. He was never overrated in my book, he just had far too much attention because the English media. Pirlo was more quiet and let his game do the talking. Deco was great as well but never on that platform with Zidane and Ronaldhino.

the combination of Buffon as a GK with defenders like Grosso, Cannavaro, Materazzi, Chiellini, and Nesta made this team a fortress. starting from the group stage all the way to the final, the only goals they got scored on were one own goal (Zaccardo against the US) and the penalties. that's really impressive.

Italy v Germany matches are always special. 1970- 2006 nothing has changed when these two teams come against each other. Cannavaro, Buffon, Grosso, Pirlo ,Del Piero what a team. That Italy team deserved to be the champions 🏆😍 and they just did this in the most pleasant way.

That game as italian was the mother of all games against the germans, also the final vs France was fantastic. Italy vs Germany is top of the world (with Brazil of course.)

As a Germany fan I remembered this as a 50-50 game that ended in heartbreak right before penalties. The reality was that Italy was far better for most of the game. They had a better team overall and the clearer chances throughout. This was the beginning of the national team resurgence for Germany but in hindsight this team wasn't quite there yet. As much as it pains me to admit, Italy were clear deserved winners.

Actually, if you listen closely just after Del Piero's goal, you can hear the final whistle. Same thing happened in the Round of 16 against Australia; game was called right after Totti's goal.

I have not seen a better World Cup match in my lifetime (1998-now). Even though Germany have never beaten Italy in a World Cup game, those match-ups are always epic.
Italy won by penalties in 2006 and it was a massive exorcism for the Italians because they lost on penalties in the 1/2 of 1990 vs Argentina , in the final of 1994 vs Brazil and in the 1/4 of 1998 vs France . Plus they were completely robbed by Korea in 2002
Throw in the final of Euro 2000, losing for the golden goal in extra time with France.. Terrible years

I’m gonna go as far as to say this is the most perfect match I’ve ever watched in my whole life. Rewatching now is still as exciting as seeing it live back then.
