For sending the cutting board with the obtuse angle on the handle I use a sending strip on my scroll saw. This is great for getting into those tight corners. Additionally when batching you can do all your work a grit at a time.

In those tight corners you drill holes to get that smooth rounded shape with the radius large enough to get a round over bit in there. Great job by-the-way on those boards

Hi guys, you probably have already worked out, by now, which way is best to cut the fancy handles by using templates or whatever works for you. It just jumped in my mind the key cutter machine. It uses a template, the original key, but instead of overlap, as you usually do with templates, its beside, as a guide. If you could applied this technique with the help of an arm, to any of your machine, maybe saves you time. I hope that this tip is useful and works out for you. I just want to say that its just an idea, it's not something that I've tried myself.
You worth 200 % your tutorials are excellent
    Its like 2 in 1 👌
    Many thanks 🤗

How to sand the sharp inside corner... a good file, or a stick with sandpaper glued on (different grit on both sides, air file (it has 1/2 inch wide small sanding belts). A 1 x 40 belt sander. Some are cheap and take some time, some are a little expensive. There are 1/2 x 40 belts available also, or make your own with sheet sandpaper and tape.

Great suggestion! How about rounding the corner just a bit so you can use a small sanding drum? That way to keep the overall look with a slight modification for sanding speed.

Since you have a glowforge, you could design a template for consistency and utilize a flush trim bit to finalize the handle shape. Seems like it would work out if you have consistent dimensions of your boards to just throw the template on the board with some double sided tape or other system for easy removal. Great video and awesome job

I also am working on building up my name as a word worker. I was wondering if you had any suggestions on avoiding boredom while batching? If I have a custom (new) project I'm all in. If I have to make something (coin rack, 4 glass wine display, ...) more than twice I think I rather watch oil-based Polyurethane dry. I also want to say a Thank You! your pricing guide has really help me be able to charge more correctly and it gave me a tool to talk through with my customers. easily explaining how and why "custom" costs so much. To be clear I'm still not charging "full cost" (I'm not charging the labor $ I'm worth) as I feel that I'll bid myself out of the job but, I'm so much closer because of you both.

As a locksmith I usually listened to a podcast that I rally enjoy While doing "braindead" work. So if everything is set and you know the routine, time pass by pretty fast. But this only works if there is not much thinking work to do, but only "grinding" work of course. Either that or put your thought in every piece after the first how you can make each step more effective, this also take the boredom away. Cause you can always improve something in the process.

First, I've watched a handful of your videos and it took me a little time to realize something about Jennie that makes her so adorable - she has the confidence (and rightly so) to be on camera and not feel the need to hide behind a ton of powder and paint. She realizes she looks great without hiding behind a ton of makeup (or behind a very slight amount) and I really wish more women would take that approach. That's one of the reasons I find my wife so attractive, and so many of the women I was attracted to throughout my years.
I liked the first charcuterie board that Jennie liked for it's simplicity and ease of reproducing. That thin line of hardwood adds a nice pop of color without going overboard and being too busy, and it is easily repeatable from a business standpoint. Cut the light and dark woods at full length (8-10 feet) and make one HUGE and LONG board and glue it up before moving on. Run the entire piece over the router table to quickly and easily do 75% of the routing, then cut the boards to length and finish. Where the handles are located, you could make the board a little wider and cut the handle for two boards from the same width of wood to save wood with the bandsaw or jigsaw.
If you're going to sell that first one Jennie had as a thumbhole capable board, you may want to make the hole a little larger and possibly cut the hole on an angle so it is more ergonomic for a thumbhole, then round over the sharper parts of the hole for the sake of comfort. The second one with the ~90 degree angles that would be hard to create a template for - I think you're over thinking the issue. Skip the 90 degree angles that require individual time consuming work with a chisel and instead, cut the area with the 90 degree angle in a circular pattern using a forstner bit for that part, and cut out the rest of the handle, then use the spindle sander to smooth out the corners where the handle meets the board before finishing the edges with the router. I'm not sold on which edge I prefer on these, the round over bit or the chamfer. I'm leaning slightly towards the double chamfer, but with a handle that would not be quite as comfortable. Also a cove and bead type edge would make this easier to get a grip on the edges of the board when picking it up off a flat surface, or maybe going heavy handed on the routing when you round over the edges of the handle. If you're making these out of a template, you could also create a template so you can put in the routed juice trough. if you make the boards all the same general thickness, length and width, you could build a single template to guide the router so you can easily make it a juice trough without going too far and accidentally creating a juice drain. :0) I wish I could attach an image, but basically what I am thinking is a router guide made more or less with a rabbit type slot where you could simply slide the board into the rabbit guide like a hand into a glove, then run around the guide with the router to make the slot, then remove the board and repeat with the next. As long as your dimensions are fairly close, it makes an easily repeatable use jig. I would also suggest making the handle on that one a little longer for comfort and control. The third one Jennie showed was nice, but the handle being off to the side would make it a bit awkward looking if you hang it. Just to spitball some ideas, you could have the handle attach as it is now, but angle the handle to the side so it hangs essentially straight using the handle hole, or leave the handle as it is and drill a small hole, but not all the way through the board so it could be hung on a wall with the nail/screw hidden behind the board.

Get a 3/16 blade for your bandsaw. The 3/4 I saw is meant for resawing. Also, a Carter v-groove bearing behind the blade lets you make free form curves without binding.

One of the designs that I have to cut out a lot had a sharp corner in it my solution was to change the corner to a small forstner bit that has a corresponding drum on the spindle sander and it didn't really take anything away from the look of the product

  • @wayneshippen1126
    @wayneshippen1126 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I liked all of the boards, I agree with Jennie about my favorite. For the handle, I suggest using a Forsner bit to make a radius on the interior corners. Then it will be easier to sand, especially if you have a spindle sander of that radius. Greetings from Idaho. Wayne

I rally enjoy tour videos and it IS nice to see and follow the kompani from start. I am just a armature woodworker but cause of tour video I was thinking I maybe Gould sell My work as well. But it would probably only be in small hobbyscale för extra Money.
So I liked the "plain" one better. Probably cause the line in the middle. Cause it really made the whole piece. The other one was nice with handle, but I think that will seldome be used (the handle)
There is also 2 other aspect why I like it in practical thinking. 1. It is easier in the production line if you like to make it in bigger scale. 2.nd is that it is easier to see the "branding" that probably will be burnt into the white area. But you can also hide the branding in the line if you don't want to have a big sign with a logo.
For a more advance I would look at a painterspalettboard and try and remake the hole so it might look/feel like one (more ergonomic) when you "serving" sense painters use it daily in that way. But that will make it a little harder in making process than just a plain hole.
Thank you for the video and keep the work up :)
A question at last... I am from Sweden and I uncertain, but you have a flag in the background and it looks very much like the Czech flag... but not really. What flag is it?

On the Walnut board that has the sharp angles on the handle, when you design your template make it and then use a round over bit on the handle area. That way when you use the template it's already setup for using a round over bit. Easy Peerzie lemon squeezy LOL

Great video. If you have a spindle sander, I would base the radius for those two corners that connect the handle to the main board off of the smallest spindle you have. It might make the handle a little wider but it will make sanding easier in the end. I like it when sanding is easier. :)

To sand into the "sharp" corners I use a 1/4" spindle sander (you could run them in a drill if need be) ... sure it won't be a super sharp corner, but still a very good looking one ;)

    • @JayOfBurn
      @JayOfBurn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I came to suggest this too.
Making a small spindle would be pretty quick and simple. I used to have a small die cutting bit with a slot through the length, quick grind to remove the teeth and it would be great to wrap a bit of sand paper in to create a very narrow spindle for a drill.

Jennie and Davis I admit I have a commercial CNC but my cousin has the same CNC and it does not showing up late no Worker’s Comp. no employee taxes no accidental injuries and I bet you the small cnc keeps up with your pattern router most quarter inch bits on a slow machine like yours are 50-75 inches a minute that means if your paddle is 50 inches of surface material it would only take about two minute to cut out there’s no way you’re doing in a pattern router especially when you have to take the time to adhere it to your material and take the tape off when you’re done and then all the sanding no way I promise you’re wrong
Should listen to experience I promise it’ll take a little bit of time to learn it but it’ll be well worth it

To sand into the sharp corners try a 1" belt sander. I use one of those to get between the ears on my bunny Easter baskets. In a pinch a disk sander might work as well

BOTH of you are AMERICAN HEROES because you're VETERANS who know and value FREEDOM found only in America! My guess? Ya'll served in the Air Force...you're smart and highly motivated!
Although I'm not a FT woodworker, I've found Klingspor's Woodworking Shop in Hickory, NC to be my "go to" resource for everything wood working. Their online chat team is staffed with highly skilled, friendly, knowledgeable folks who know their stuff and never pressure for a sale. Greatly appreciate ya'lls energy and enthusiasm as a young couple. I'm confident God is going to bless and prosper your marriage, family, business, and community as you continue serving with integrity, service before self, and excellence in all you do!

Did you make them because you wanted to make them, or because your customers requested them? Big difference...

@@jennieanddavis I normally make beard combs as a daily item. Figured I'd make something different for the shop.

Gotta listen to your customer base. Can’t just run off a cliff with a random idea.

Beautiful...reminds of Apple marketing packaging...like if apple was to mass produce Charcuterie boards, this is what the packaging would look like. Bravo!

Here's a tip: Stop listening to everyone else and pull from your creativity. Doodle on paper as much as you can. Ya'all know what paper is I hope.

They are moving in the right direction! Keep up the good work but KILL that very distracting music. It takes away from the video content.
