Giannis, in Greek, it's the same name as John. It's pronounced Yannis (YA + NIS, YArd and tenNIS). It's not so difficult. If you split his surname Ante to koumpo, makes your life easier too. I don't think that schwarzenegger is easier...
I have to teach people how to say my last name: Papanastasoulis.. so I tell them that it is like 3 words, Papa, Nasta and Soulis.. it makes it so much easier lol
Pete Kontostatoulatokatos (in a Harry Klein joke about an american/greek reporter decades ago). Not much has changed in the common us citizen's perception.
To be honest i decided to learn his name when he became my favorite player in his M.I.P season how i taught myself from hearing it was thinking yawn-nis an-tet-u-kump-o and now i always enjoy saying his name because of the kump part for some reason
Why there are no spelling rules in english? I just don't get it. Words are spelled randomly without bounds with sounds. How can you know how to pronounce a word you never heard before?
Phonetically, most languages such as Greek or Spanish or Japanese, the pronunciation of consonants and vowels always remain the same. An-te-to-ko-unm-po
***** I think part of it is because its such a bastardized language as it borrows from many different languages and cultures. It was my first language and I still find it weird lol
English, and also French, are the worst languages for readability. You basically just have to learn it word by word. The most efficient orthographies (spelling rules, that is) are for languages like Finnish, Spanish, and (provided you get the hang of the script) Korean, plus any language that has had an orthography developed from scratch within the last fifty years. A lot of the reason for the variation is partly what Matsumoto San said, but also partly due to long-standing historical spellings where sounds were at one time pronounced separately, but due to natural language change over hundreds of years, no longer are. On another Antetokounmpo vid, this Greek guy told me that Greek actually has its wonkiness as well, particularly with their "nt" and "mp" (and having had some experience with Greek I think "gk" fits the pattern as well) spellings.
Having learned italian after english I agree with you. There were precise rules to follow and you could easily pronounce an unknown word while in english you have to remember how each word goes.
Actually, only his family name is kinda difficult. His person's name Giannis derives from IOANNIS, which is JOHN in Greek. IO easily becomes G. As for his family name, it's a clear African name, as his father came to Greece, met his wife, and the boys became full Greek citizens, even serving the Greek obligatory Army Service.
Yeah his roots are amazing . My boy Giannis is a greek in the heart with the insane nigerian genes. I also love how he shows love to both greek/nigerian people, and not supporting only Greece, evenn tho he barely speaks nigerian he considers himself both greek and nigerian
For Greeks to understand the problem think Jose Cholebas when his father went to Germany his family name if spelled Cholevas would sound CholeFas so he changed the letter to the B that existed in his name's greek form.
Right! To onoma grafetai kanonika Adetokunbo! Με ποιά λογική τώρα το έγραψαν έτσι, μάλλον φταίνε τα ξεφτέρια τα δικά μας, που το έγραψαν ετσι πάνω στο διαβατήριό του! ;)
I write in english just in case some Milwaukee fans read it. To be pronounced correctly the name should be spelled Yiannis Adetokunbo. Problem is that according to greek name transliteration in latin for passports only the double consonnants in the start of a word get the proper form ΜΠΑΤΗΣ ie becomes Batis so the A (nt)eto k(ou)n(mp)o is just a problem that greek phonemes for d, oo or u and b are written with 2 letters.

Its Greek transliteration of the Nigerian name so it is only natural they can read their own language.

I can understand that people didn't know how to pronounce it correctly, but seriously they could at least READ it instead of making up the name.
For Greeks to understand the problem think Jose Cholebas when his father went to Germany his family name if spelled Cholevas would sound CholeFas so he changed the letter to the B that existed in his name's greek form.
