This dude just made a fabulous shot at 86.5 yards on a buck, it barely makes it out of the field and piles up and people are gonna call it unethical, just because of the distance? Come on people. Just because you aren't comfortable shooting at that distance doesn't mean he has to limit the distance he's comfortable shooting. He's clearly thought through whether or not to shoot and even let down because it didn't feel right. Max range of what you should shoot an animal in reality comes down to shooter ability, conditions surrounding the shot, and understanding animal behavior. Joel can clearly shoot well, it was calm conditions, the buck had his leg forward and was eating and not alert. Everything lined up correctly and Joel wasn't letting his ego get in the way, he was calculated, confident, and it paid off. Yes bowhunting is usually an up close and personal endeavor and as a hunter you should absolutely be a good enough woodsman to get that close. The ability to shoot at longer range and kill your animal is just another asset in your repertoire that makes you an even deadlier hunter. It's about developing the all around package if you will. If you wanna limit your range to a shorter distance go for it. But don't give a guy who has put in a ton of work to be as good as he is a moral slap on the wrist for shooting farther than you are comfortable shooting, especially when he is successful in his harvest. Good shootin Joel keep crushing it.
@@stevebrewer6204Thank you for saying this. You beat me to the punch. Compound is just not fast enough to accommodate for the drop from hearing the shot or anything else that may alert that buck. I would say that’s too far for even the faster crossbows out there. 60 yards for crossbow and 45 for compound is limits for most. But I won’t lie and say I could not push the limits a hair on a once in a lifetime buck…we all would truth be told. But not on an average mature buck say 140-170. Just being honest. But I would still be unethical anywhere past what I know is my comfortable range. Now if this guy can show me 3-4” groups at 85 yards consistently then maybe in turns more into knowing how to read the deer your hunting.
@@offgridwhitetails8768 I agree. If you are shooting outside of your comfortable/effective range, I would agree thats unethical. Know your limits and stick to them, everyones limits are different.
@@HuntEthical Come on people! It’s no one’s business to make calls on another’s hunt. If you have watched these brothers shoot 3-d and target it’s pretty obvious they both are very skilled at long range shooting. This wasn’t a Hail Mary hope I make it shot. It was a conscious dedicated shot he knew he was capable of doing. There are many good archers fully capable of this same scenario. It’s no one’s business anyway. What’s “ not ethical “ is someone taking a shot at any distance and just praying they hit an animal in the kill zone BECAUSE they aren’t skilled but want it so bad to showoff a big buck. That’s unethical!
Awesome video! 86.5 yards.....mind blown!!! That is so cool! You have put in the time, practice and know your abilities and hammered a great buck! Congrats!
I have no problem with him taking that shot. He clearly practices at those distances and feels comfortable taking it. Also an 86.5 yard pass through! Hoyt commercial right there. Nice job gentlemen.
Excellent shot! I shot a good buck this year at close to my maximum comfortable range (41 yards in a cut bean field). I have buddies that can shoot those type of distances so it's all about the shooter and their comfort level. My heart started racing when I heard the click of your hinge release. I was like here we go! I've shot a hinge a few times but in a hunting scenario I always have this concern it's going to go off when my pin isn't where I want. Great buck and video.
To anyone saying this is unethical I'm gonna refrain from saying some of the things I'd like to say out of annoyance with comments like that and just let you know you can get to that skill level too with hard work. I have no problem taking a deer at that distance. With well made and fine tuned equipment and a lot of practice and attention to detail it can be done. I shoot all year round and practice out to well over 100 yards and i know Joel does too and his shot placement here is a testament to that. No it's not ethical for everyone but for lot of people it absolutely is.
It’s not about hitting the X ring, it’s the fact that a deer can literally do a 180 before the arrow gets there. It’s just setting yourself up for a terrible wounded deer scenario. Glad it worked out for you this time.
Sorry but I think that was a bad shot especially because you are a popular TH-camr. Giving your viewers the idea that they can take a shot like that, in my opinion, is a bad idea and bad for the bow hunting sport. Most bow hunters don’t practice and tune their bows and arrows like you probably do. In most cases shooting at that distance, the deer probably would have been wounded and turned into coyote food.
Great shot but you know you wouldn’t show if you missed . Idc what ppl say, 80 yard shot with a crossbow is asking to just wound a deer.l, much less a vertical bow.
@ absolutely If I had a hunting channel. You post the good, the bad & the ugly. It’s bow hunting, it’s happened to everyone if you’ve hunted long enough. He just got lucky the deer didn’t move. 10 more shots at that distance 8/10 are wounded. Even if it’s Levi Morgan.
@@ShaneBolerHunting Would you though? I agree that you should show the good bad and ugly so people have a realistic expectation and can learn from others mistakes so they don't repeat them. The problem is hunters in general can be very toxic and it inevitably turns into a shaming match. Just today I saw two separate videos where bad shots were made. One guy aimed top of the heart and the deer ducked the arrow clean. The other aimed in the same spot and hit the deer high, both scenarios were inside of 35 yards BTW. The second one the guy posted trail cam videos of the deer days later and the deer was ok, wounded but moving good and not in pain. Were people on either of those videos understanding/supportive and said "Well, thats bowhunting, its happened to all of us."? Nope, they were getting blasted and will be for weeks to come. So if you wound whether its 5 yards, 30 yards, or 100 yards whats the point of posting it? It's damned if you do damned if you don't. Obviously I'm not saying just send it and wound animals for the hell of it. What I am saying is don't cast judgment on other hunters because you don't agree with how far they choose to shoot. If they put in the time to on demand be that good of an archer, understand animal behavior, and don't let their ego get in the way of decision making then they're doing it fine. Once you start shooting outside of your effective range just for the hell of it, thats when you're being unethical. Anyway hunt the way you want to hunt and good luck this season.
@ he’s a great shot. I’m not casting stones. It’s a bad look for the young archers who don’t know better.. too many things can go wrong with a live animal. No matter how good he is , that shot is not successful but 1,or maybe 2 times out of 10. Not because of him, but all the variables hunting a live wild animal. Idc if you ppl don’t get it or dont agree. I’m old school & I’ve hunted whitetails long enough with a bow to know how quickly a good released shot can go wrong because of the deer. Even on those dumb slow Midwest deer . Yes, they’re like hunting a different animal vs hunting whitetails in the south/southeast. Not nearly as wary, spooky or high wired. Probably because we have such long deer seasons. But if you’ve truly hunted both , it’s almost like a different species of deer., you know there’s a diference., But to satisfy all of you, he’s a great shot, I even told him great shot, but that’s an unethical shot even with a crossbow. Period.,,
@@kurtthorpe7659 in certain circumstances and scenarios, different shooters ability etc - I would agree. This was a very well thought out shot. In the same circumstances on the range I’ll put it in the vitals with every arrow I shoot at the same distance and variabilities. I would much rather execute this shot with the given wind conditions, body language of the buck, shoulder forward, calm etc. with knowledge of my equipment and years of shooting ability - Than take a 30-35 yard shot in a 15 mph wind where you had to stop the deer in your shooting lane and he is alert (yet that is one of the most common whitetail shots and considered “ethical”). Everything is situational and based off of MANY different factors. Show me a distance where an animal has never been wounded regardless of shooter ability and knowledge of the circumstances and I will limit myself to that distance. I am NOT advocating for anyone to shoot this distance. I am advocating for everyone to know their OWN abilities and understand the situations at hand to the highest level possible. @ October 14th! Haven’t shot it through a chronograph. But based on other bows I’ve set up in the past my guess is it’s right around 293-298fps. In that wheelhouse with a 498g arrow and 27” draw. I’ll shoot it through a chrono soon to find out 👍🏼
