I am so jelous of anyone who got to work with him on stage! All the Sarah's and Christine's and the many others have all been blessed to work with him ~Rest In Peace, Steve Barton the true Angel of Music~
Five people (the dislikes) are completely ignorant to what true poetry and art are. This song is one of the most lyrically beautiful songs I've heard in a while.
Not the song, but Steve Barton did the best job, he made Krolock as he was and is remembered, he make the best Krolock and no one could replace him, not in the german nor in the english version. I'm so sad that I haven't seen him live, only got the video and the cd backtimes. Thanks to his acting and voice I liked dance of the vampires, now it's no where near what I'd liked :( I was so sad as I heard about his death...
The lyrics are so powerful. Beautiful. Work of art. I feel it in my soul. In my very being..in every fiber, every atom, everything that makes me theoretically and scientifically. "I believe in just one god... All consuming appetite." Beautiful.
Zoe, I'm right there with you. In both languages, just absolute poetry. The weakest flaws of humanity, alongside the beautiful soaring heights of longing and ambition. The absolute agony of regret. This song of Steve's is IMHO his masterpiece. There will never be another Von Krolok, only stand-ins
@@handynutzerin6466 It's the original "Meatloaf - Objects in the Rear View Mirror" by Jim Steinman is the music an' those lyrics, Meatloaf sings that piece of paradise.

Both versions, the german and the english, are wonderful. Many lyrics in the english one are more soulful than in the german. Especially the passages when he sings from the beginning of his "curse"
As far as translations go, personally, I think this is one of the better ones. Not really fond of the fact that they translated it to "endless appetite" (it sounds rather comedic, especially compared to "the insatiable greed," which I think is the literal translation). Other than that, I thought the English lyrics were pretty good. And, gosh, Steve Barton was legendary!
@@kexu5858 No, Jim wrote the lyrics in English first and those were pretty much used for Broadway, with a few changes, like the "God is dead...." verse was replaced, as american audiences can't handle that :)

I think, this is one of the few songs of the musical which sound in English as good as in German. Endless appetite and Total Eclipse of the heart. There are no words to describe this song...
So magical and wonderful voice. This with Meatloaf (Objects in the rear´viewmirror) is awesome but this version makes me almost cry and my skin i almost creeping out of my body.
Dance of the Vampires Endless Appetite Lyrics Well alright, no stars tonight The moon must hide can't bear to see my face So many moons have passed So many suns gone down Too much blood under the bridge Too many worlds turned upside down The skies were pure and the fields were green The fading summer, sixteen-seventeen The first time I ever drew blood She was such a beautiful and innocent child She never knew my soul was cursed for good I fought to overcome my thirst I thought I could But when I kissed her lips then I had no control And the furies all ran wild And when I grasped for life I always killed the things for which I yearned I wish to be a flame and reduce to ashes But I have never burned I long to fly in total freedom and yet these chains keep dragging me down I want to be an angel or the devil himself But I am nothing but a creature longing for things I can't have The preacher's daughter let me in her room In seventeen thirty-two, to love me was her doom With her silken blood I wrote a poem of love Upon her ivory skin And the bashful page of Napoleon the Great In eighteen hundred thirteen he stood at the gate When I recall his body I can't help but think To consume him was a sin So many victims washing on the shores an ocean of pure tears So many pleas for mercy, howls of pain Intoxicating fears I used my body just like a bandage I used their bodies just like a wound And I'll never know where they disappeared But I can see them rising up out my memories now Just like the demons rising up from a tomb! And there is no way ever to apologize, repent or make amends No release and no redemption The hunger never ends There are those who believe in science And those who believe in art There are those who believe in power and wealth Or love and matters of the heart There are those who believe in various gods In nations, and knowledge In hell and in heaven The powers of darkness The a__umption of the light But I believe in just one god That of endless and insatiable Immoral and destructible And all consuming appetite There is a prediction that I now will make And I'm sure it will be right: When the next millennium finally comes The god most worshiped in this world Will be the god of appetite
You forget the part with "when the world has made its final breath and extinguished all the light..." But thank you for your hard work writing this down. 🙃
I think they did a great job with translating this into English! I do prefer the more poetic description of the blood drawing they had in the German version, which reflects more the interpretation of vampires as a metaphor for greed among others in addition to the literal meaning (e.g. the literal translation of the song’s name would be Insatiable Greed and not Endless Appetite, and the descriptions of his earlier kills are a little more euphemized as if he is reluctant to acknowledge just how dreadful his deeds were). But I guess that’s personal preference.
:-) Yes! The translation was the work of Dr. Michael Kunze! (Meanwhile DDr. Kunze, German 'Libretto-Man' of the Musical 'Dance of the vampires'.) Ph. Sachs
Ok People are doing my head in, The German version is the best. The problem with the english version is that they tried to make it a comedy thats why Jim Steinman wanted nothing to do with it really. It is funny, that in the tranlation in to the english text some pieces are, that remember to the song "objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer then they are" but they have no relation to the german lyrics.

well if thats your opinion thats great :) I jsut thought you didn't knew the german version .. I don't hate the english one but I just don't like it as much
Sadly the translators did an awful job with this, instead of trying to stay close to the meaning he tried to stay close to the german language which any trnaslator should know doesn't work, through that it is not as emotional as the German original, if they would have written new lyrics with the same meaning (what you should do) that wouldn't happen

Blood red moon tonight. Had to revisit this.
Dance of the Vampires Endless Appetite Lyrics
Well alright,
no stars tonight
The moon must hide
can't bear to see my face
So many moons have passed
So many suns gone down
Too much blood under the bridge
Too many worlds turned upside down
The skies were pure and the fields were green
The fading summer, sixteen-seventeen
The first time I ever drew blood
She was such a beautiful and innocent child
She never knew my soul was cursed for good
I fought to overcome my thirst I thought I could
But when I kissed her lips then I had no control
And the furies all ran wild
And when I grasped for life
I always killed the things for which I yearned
I wish to be a flame and reduce to ashes
But I have never burned
I long to fly in total freedom
and yet these chains keep dragging me down
I want to be an angel or the devil himself
But I am nothing but a creature longing for things I can't have
The preacher's daughter let me in her room
In seventeen thirty-two, to love me was her doom
With her silken blood I wrote a poem of love
Upon her ivory skin
And the bashful page of Napoleon the Great
In eighteen hundred thirteen he stood at the gate
When I recall his body I can't help but think
To consume him was a sin
So many victims washing on the shores
an ocean of pure tears
So many pleas for mercy, howls of pain
Intoxicating fears
I used my body just like a bandage
I used their bodies just like a wound
And I'll never know where they disappeared
But I can see them rising up out my memories now
Just like the demons rising up from a tomb!
And there is no way ever to apologize,
repent or make amends
No release and no redemption
The hunger never ends
There are those who believe in science
And those who believe in art
There are those who believe in power and wealth
Or love and matters of the heart
There are those who believe in various gods
In nations, and knowledge
In hell and in heaven
The powers of darkness
The a__umption of the light
But I believe in just one god
That of endless and insatiable
Immoral and destructible
And all consuming appetite
There is a prediction that I now will make
And I'm sure it will be right:
When the next millennium finally comes
The god most worshiped in this world
Will be the god of appetite
You forget the part with "when the world has made its final breath and extinguished all the light..."
But thank you for your hard work writing this down. 🙃
