Thank-you for your clear, informative instruction. I worked in pastel a number of years ago & finally got so frustrated with matting, spacing, glass problems, reflection, etc of framing & the transfer of pastel onto mat after you finally put it all together that I left it & went thru almost every other medium. Now you make me want to revisit pastel. Your technique is very interesting & I am inspired to try yet again!🙋🎨

I did this painting this afternoon. I’ve just started using pastels. I didn’t have a wide selection of colors so I did the best I could. I tend to want to blend my backgrounds. Thank you for the step by step lesson.

You are a great instructor and your pastel paintings are inspiring. After watching your videos I want to try using soft pastels. However, I am afraid to do so because of the potential hazards of using soft pastels. Some state that one should not work with soft pastels unless one has a filtered air system in their studio, employs gloves and and a mask while painting, and entirely prevents exposure (including pets) to soft pastel dust. My "studio" is located in my bedroom and I also have a cat. Do you think my concerns about the potential dangers of using soft pastels are justified ?

I think it is important to show your reference photo prominently as you are drawing/painting.
Also, I didn’t see what you used to do your early blending

There are three primary pigment colors : red, yellow, blue.
Blue is the only cool color among these three.
In all mixes of paint, the one with the most blue will be the coolest.
    Yellow and blue create green.
Yellow with 10% blue added to it will be a warmer green than yellow with 20% blue added to it.
    Red and blue make purple.
The mixture or red and blue with the most blue in it will create a cooler purple than the mixture with less blue in it.

It seems to me that sanded paper is probably worth the money. I’m irrationally miserly about art papers of all kinds.

The nice thing about sanded paper is that they are easily reused!
