  • We are still at the Color Country Model Railroad Club in Saint George Utah for their November open house. This week we are visiting David Merrill's HO-scale railroad.
The highly detailed model railroad features western scenes and scratch-built and craftsman structures. AND a fantastic photo backdrop of western mountains.
One area depicts Utah's Park City, where the original three-foot gauge Utah Eastern, later the dual gauge and then standard gauge Denver and Rio Grande Western, met the standard gauge Union Pacific. The best-known structure was the Silver King Coalition Mines tipple right in Park City. The building stood for almost one hundred years before it burned. But to this day it is the symbol of Park City and is featured as the city logo. It has been scratch-built in every scale, and the one here is among the best! WOW!

    Beautifully built layout.
I stayed a night in Park City in 2016. It was freezing cold and nothing was open. We'd dined outdoors the evening before in Moab, wearing t-shirts!
I remember I really enjoyed the drive from Park City to Salt Lake City. Beautiful scenery.

HI! Yup... I worked there in the winters for years. I was media for Sundance. Fun gig.. NO MATTER.. But staying there night temps were as low as -40º F. Oddly thats -40ºC as well.... I DIGRESS! BUt during inversion its cold in the valley, not that cold but daytime 20ºF, but in Park City warm! I was having lunch with Sundance guys at the TOP of the resort. It was 60ºF!!! 16ºC. No coats. We ate outside in the warm sun as people skied by... Whilst down in the city it was dense fog and everything covered with frost.... just odd...

@@ToyManTelevision It is not hard to do. I am 74 years old and doing bonsai and from seeds also. Give it a try and don't be afraid to do it. If you can make these fantastic layouts, then doing bonsai will be a nice relaxing venture for you. Just be patient and select the tree you want. I have to redo an Olive tree for my small HO caboose. Do you know of a track to have for the small pot so that it does not rust? Just need one straight track and where to buy it. I use the regular track, but it rusts with the watering. I try to do it on the children's corner that I do also for the kids. Always enjoy your videos. A great husband and wife team. Tom

The overall quality of the transitions from 3D to the 2D photo backdrops absolutely looks awesome. Excellent enhancement of the field of depth.

David Merrill's layout is such a fun one to go to. There's always something interesting to find, like the little secret of the name of Merrill's railroad (which I never noticed till you two pointed it out) or being able to help out on the layout when there's a little derailment or something causing a little derailment. Just absolutely a fun one to go to because of how cool of a person David Merrill is, I am thinking of going back sometime soon or when all the layouts do an open house. Thank you for making this video about it.

Hi. It sort of depends on what you are modeling. Class A railroads sure. Or even N. But Colorado three foot gauge? O or S? Or our choice… F scale. But HO is still the most popular.

One word describes this layout: AWESOME!!! Dale, every portion of this layout is "contest level". 😊 I am totally impressed with the level of detail, everywhere! The backdrops are beautiful! And the trestles always gets my attention. I LOVE how the articulated steam engine slows to a "realistic" stop at 👉 10:00. Too bad small scale steam engines cannot blow out lots of smoke and steam like the real thing... those are the only things missing. Yeah, smoke and steam! Great video! 👏😁

It's almost like you're married or something. Finishing each other's sentences. You could be discussing the tops of your neighbors open trash cans hypothesizing what they did last week, to the point where I'd want to pull up a chair and join the discussion. Great job again.
