  • I take a walk through the British Museum for the first time. Located in the Bloomsbury area of London, it is home to the largest permanent collection in the world. Founded in 1753, it's celebrated for its diverse holdings, encompassing over 8 million works, spanning from ancient times to the present day. The museum's collection is incredibly diverse, featuring items from virtually every part of the world. Some of its most famous holdings include the Rosetta Stone, the Elgin Marbles (sculptures from the Parthenon in Athens), the Egyptian mummies, the Lewis Chessmen, and numerous other treasures from ancient civilizations.

The worlds second biggest permanent art collection is also in London -the V&A (Victoria &Albert Museum) is also stuffed full of art and statuary from around the world, about 4 million pieces, or half that of the British Museum. Finally the world's largest private art collection is the Royal Collection, kept by the royal family (1 million+ pieces) -mostly in Windsor Castle's 1,000+ rooms (the country's most lavish palace, dripping with gold, painting and intricacy), Buckingham Palace's 700 rooms (then there's the 30 other palaces and estates) and the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London.

The large, light-colored cylindrical structure under the glass roof that we encounter on entering via the main entrance occupies what was the reading room of the British Library. The reading room has moved to the library's new building at 96 Euston Road. The museum looks spiffier and more colorful than I remember it. So it's obviously being maintained very well indeed. The argument over returning ancient objects to the lands where they were found rages on. At its root, the argument is about money, since the countries of origin now believe their income from tourism would increase if the artifacts were home again. But meanwhile, we can still see them wherever they now reside.

It's sad, because it's not open to see, and it's really historic. Various people from Bram Stoker to Karl Marx (his seat was G7) used it daily to work in. Next year they may be running guided tours in there, but it's mostly used for archiving now. After all the work to save it and glaze over the court.

Honestly, places like London and New York have their size and wealth based on a system of theft called"colonialism". As people tour the city, I think few ever think "theft" is the reason for the magnificence. Crimes are seldom a topic in places that were the capital of empires. Ancient Rome could be a model of importing wealth.

The very nature of museums is a British invention, there have been millions of artefacts that I’ve been lost to history, the British museum and history in the care of Britain, Is kept and maintained, the ancient Egyptian language was decoded by Britain and revived so we can understand what it says, Britain studied and understood world history. We are a highly intelligent society. Please do not be jealous that all the best artefacts in the world Is found in the British Museum.
