I don't think it was ever in there in the first place. My then Russian penfriend came to stay with me once. It was fraught because turned out we were both temperamental and a bit on the edge. She was lovely but she WAS very authoritarian in nature and accepted other people being authoritarian over her if it applied,just as she was authoritarian over those she was allowed to be. Its a different mindset.

I think that is slowly changing but I still don't think we have the full truth. I would hope that the information most of those bloggers are sharing is information that we could always get through other means anyway. Just as long as they don't say bad things about their country then hopefully they should be fine and not get in any trouble for anything.

It sounds like there are people particularly in the country areas who still think that they are living in the USSR and unfortunately this will all take time to resolve. I do believe that the lives of the Russian people will improve.
Ksenia, in the 'free' west, if you take the law into your own hands, like the man who 'cleaned up' the road, you would also end up in court. This is normal. The citizen cannot just do what s/he wants.
Ksenia, I want to offer some context concerning the man that was sentenced to one half year house arrest. I worked in Russia for about 9 months during the mid 90's. A observation that I had, was how sensitive people were to those that did not do their assigned jobs. At the time everyone was a member of the worker's union/party. Since almost everything was associated as a benefit from the Russian state, when you did'nt work and or do your job, you were considered a parasite to the system. The way to view this from afar, is that when you do the work that someone else is doing, you are taking their work from them. I think the authorites did'nt like the idea of having to deal with having to deal with those responsibe for the maintenance of that road. I'll just add that when you got in trouble a person or persons, you never knew how far up the line, they were in the local political party.

I have the impression that most Russians have a rose tinted view of the guy, not fanatical or adoring, but some sort of mild admiration mixed with dismissal of his crimes. I wonder if the TV schedule now allowing for entertainment is a sign of some sort. Sign of what, I don't know. If it was the West it would be just a matter of the public being tired of the topic. Propagandists never get tired, though, but they run out of steam if they don't get clear instructions. I dated 2 Russians in the 90’s 1 from Ukraine (yes he considered himself Russian) and 1 from Siberia, very different cultures even at that time still the USSR, and they all knew how awful Stalin was, he killed so many Russians. That happens in the UK too. Some individual transfoms a litter strewn traffic roundabout into a beautiful garden and the local authority takes them to court for trespass and not having suitable insurance in case of accident. Same thing.

I did not believe this, but in the EU it is true. The factories face problems with expenses and inflation. And more children have diceases after covid than normal. But there are plans to create stocks for at least 6 weeks

Ksenia, which news source do you rely on the most? And, do you think understanding English lets you get more reliable news than those who only understand Russian?
Not from the UK BBC. Nothing reliable on the BBC. Waste of time. People are switching off in droves.
