The Tragic Downfall Of America's Love Hotels | 1970's heart-shaped Tubs

- The Poconos proximity to East Coast population centers made it perfect for honeymoons. And in the years after World War II, the region exploded. What began with a handful of resorts, soon became a flood of inns, lodges, private cabins, and hotels.
In the early 1960’s, romance was taken to new levels with couples-only resorts that featured heart-shaped Jacuzzi bathtubs, 7-foot high champagne glass whirlpool hot tubs, in-room fireplaces, above-bed mirrors, round beds, late-night edible service (whip cream, chocolate and strawberries), and even private pools.
in the late 1990s and early 2000s, things changed. Many of the old Poconos resort properties started going downhill. Single-family proprietors faced the mortality of the owners. Upkeep costs exceeded revenue from declining bookings. In some instances the owners were filled with hubris and didn’t think things could change.
In other instances, efforts to modernize were blocked by antiquated laws and a strong resistance from both the state and county governments to see the region succeed (arguably some of that had to do with shifting political demographics in the state). Newer resorts were built in the region and in neighboring states. And visitors began looking for something different and more contemporary.

This is so sad. My husband and I went there for our honeymoon back in 1991. I loved it there. We had the room with a pool, a fireplace and heart shaped tub.
It looks cheezy. Somewhere a banker would take his mistress.
How much was it?
i’m sorry :( i bet you guys had a great time, & even though it’s abandoned now ur memories will last a lifetime ❤
@@keepingitrealUKthat was the look back then 🙄
They still exists though. I still go with my hubby! We love the room with the pool, champagne tower, sauna, bedroom upstairs!
I miss the 80s and 90s so much....there will never be a time as good ever again..
When that commercial was on I thought there was going to be a commercial for Disney's lady and the tramp right after 😅
I know right !!!❤
then u can’t leave out the mid 60’s on. u wouldn’t believe how free we were. cruising street raceing at 1am bitchen cars. Stake n shake white castle where u watch cars eat real food meet guys listening to great sounds playing on AM.
Say you're straight cis and white without saying you're straight cis and white.
Sure. It was good if you weren't a minority
I’m 41 years old, and I think I just realized my dad and stepmom are swingers bc they still used to “stay for weekends” at Pocono Palace like 20 years ago when they lived locally 😭😭😭
😂😂😂
I have stayed at the Poconos on my honeymoon!! It was crazy!!I had the round shape bed and heart shaped hot tub!
The champagne glass hot tub was so cool!! I believe it was Vive Haven. It was 1988/89
The champagne and small pool rooms were called Adam and Eve rooms. It was then 1000 To 1200. A night in the late 80’s!!
I was there on honeymoon in 1982 it was 700 dollars for three days not ,thousand was garden of Eden room
Josh is literally the king of abandoned videos keep it up brother
I agree
Bro I swearrr my fav
There's some other great ones out there but there's just something about Josh's videos
Him and Steve Ronin are awesome!
Yes he sure is really enjoy his videos
I remember seeing pictures of that resort, especially the famous heart shaped tubs, jacquizzi, the jacquizzi 8 feet in the air, in magazines in the 1980’s-1990’s. Anyone who stayed there were lucky to enjoy those love resorts back in their glory days, are very lucky to have stayed there. Those phone booths and dial phones, that aren’t push button… nostalgic! Thanks for this beautiful, yet sad video ❤️😪🙏🏼
Jacquizzi? Lmao it's a jacuzzi and honestly these rooms gross me out. There’s a reason why only the dumpiest trashiest lowest rent motels even have in room Jacuzzi anymore, which is for sanitation reasons it’s gross. It’s tacky if you wanna fuck in the bathtub. Fuck your own bathtub. Who doesn’t have one?
This is the best video you've ever produced bro. Proud of you!
I grew up in the Poconos. Growing up, as kids we complained about "living in the sticks" and being in a hurry to grow up so we could "get out of the woods". But now that I'm out of those woods, a part of me does miss it. My parents still live there so I'm always visiting at least. But I'm not sure why I was in such a hurry to live in an area where you lack privacy because your neighbors house is about 10 feet from yours. I miss the privacy of a larger yard, and trees acting like your privacy fence.
Same here!
I visit my daughter in West Virginia, her and her family live deep in the woods and mountains I love visiting because I live in Dayton Ohio were it's crowded
I live in the Bangor zip code(lower mt. Bethel township). I remember my parents going on vacation in these suites with the giant champagne baths. I thought it was so cool lol. We use to vacation in the Poconos. Honestly I prefer my neck of the woods over the Poconos region. I don’t like being surrounded by woods. We have plenty of trees and forests down here, but there’s also open space, which I really appreciated. I’ve always liked this area. I live closer to downtown Easton than Stroudsburg, so that’s where I like to visit when I want a little city life. And my occasional trips to Manhattan of course.
I love living rural. Lots of people don't. You want Starbucks it's over an hour away. Want Walmart or Aldi it's an hour away. But we don't have murders, shootings and all that ish. So quiet and my vehicle is sitting out front with keys in it. City isn't for me
I stayed at Caesars Poconos resort. The Roman towers. They were gorgeous. It had a giant champagne Jacuzzi. A lower level sunken living room with fireplace, a weight room a heart shaped pool enclosed in glass. The upstairs bedroom had a round bed and celestial ceiling with shooting stars, a double glass shower. What a shame it's closed. They had live bands and famous comedy acts. I went in the 90's.The food was awesome.
I’m ashamed to say, I stayed there when I was younger in 2008 with the heart shaped bed & champagne glass hot tub 😅😂
haha same!!
Who did you go there with?
How much did it cost
Was it nice?
No shame here, because we’re interested (at least I am) about your experience
My b.f.f in college told me her mom was taking her & her boyfriend with them on a trip to the Poconos. When she got back & developed the pics ( this is in 2000-2001), we laughed our butts off to see in the champagne glass hot tubs, you could see EVERYthing- & they were naked. I always wondered what they thought at the photo place when they printed out.😆🤭
Ha ha😂
Omg😂😂
Wonder who took the pic 😜
that’s crazy
@@ruthreuter9813 she took a pic of him and then he got out and took a pic of her....and it was all hanging out😁
Omg the mix between the old and new is soooo good!! Such a good production ❤
I really loved this video. The throwback footage with the current footage mixed really well & staying in an open love hotel was such a great touch!
Hi Claire! 👋. I was scrolling through the comments from Josh's video and I found your comment. How are you doing? I hope you are doing well. I really miss chatting with you. I am still on XPLR Club. I hope you come back someday. There are a lot of people who have left the club that I knew. It is almost beach season again. I am so excited for that. Big hugs and love. 🤗 💖
@@michaelgrzesik9772 oh my goodness, Michael! How wonderful to hear from you. I hope you are keeping well. I imagine you’re pleased it’s beach season; I know you love the beach! 😄 I miss you too and was actually thinking of you a couple of days ago when I was lounging on the beach haha (I’m on vacation in Greece at the moment). Lots of love and hugs ❤️🤗
@redheadclaire Hi Claire! 👋. Yes, the beach season is coming and I am ready to enjoy it. I have been enjoying my walks on the beach and on the boardwalk. How do you like Greece. I have never been there. How are there beaches and how is the weather there? I'm planning a vacation to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida this summer. I am so excited for that. I hope you don't mind me chatting with you on TH-cam like this to you. I hope you are well Claire and have an amazing day. Big love and hugs. 🤗 💖
@@michaelgrzesik9772 of course I don’t mind! I’m thrilled you found me 🩷 Greece is lovely! It’s hot and sunny, about 82 degrees. The resort we are staying in is right on the beach so it’s perfect! I bet Disney world will be amazing! You’ll have to let me know how it goes 💫 love and hugs.
I can't believe it's been 7 years. I remember watching the old videos. Great videos Josh! ❤❤❤
The editing showing when you visited in the past vs now in 2024 was amazing. And then the final touch, with you going to the current one... seemed like you literally went back in time to that one that was falling apart and stayed in it! Soooo amazing.
My parents had a lake front home on lake wallen pau pac. I would always see the signs for this place and once I asked my dad what that place was. I was 7 at the time and he said, “Don’t get any ideas of visiting there since your not allowed to date until your 35.” Lol Protective a little? … possibly lol that story will never get old 😊
Hey Josh , 69 years old and still watching . Love it !
Outstanding! I'm 53 and hooked! Josh, Steve, Dan, etc....love them all!💞
I’m 55 still watching
✨60✨ and love exploring!
I’m also a TH-camr …
Love watching Josh’s videos! 😃✨💖
I’m 101 years young and been watching since birf
@@erinbricker-urbanhistorian5803what's your channel called¿¿
I LOVEEEE that you used an active location in this video as well!
Having vacationed with my family at Brookdale on the Lake in the early 80s, this is a real eye-opening time warp down memory lane. This may be my favorite video of yours yet, Josh, and I have been a fan since the beginning. Keep up the good work!! XO
Absolutely loved the whole compilation of years you visited these Love Hotels. And seeing an actual active one as well. Wonderful, please more of these great exploring vidoes. You are amazing Josh.
So cool watching this since I live in PA. Haven’t been there or to the Poconos, but my parents have stayed in a love hotel there at a similar hotel. They have pictures in the late 90s and you can see the heart shaped tub in the background
That was brilliant. Absolutely loved every minute of it. From flashbacks to new, so good. Love how you blurred your body 😄 Can't we even get a sneak peek? 😄 Hope you enjoyed your stay there.
I have been following you for years and this is by far my favorite video! The history and flashbacks you did were amazing! This must have taken HOURS to edit!
you did NOT just say "some one named Sugar Ray" 😭 i feel so old. i remember when he was on the charts! lol
I had to check his age and he's 31 so I'm shocked he doesn't know him! I'm the same age and I absolutely do haha.
Totally loved this, going back in time! My husband & I spent a weekend at Cove Haven to celebrate our anniversary. It was 3 wks after 9-11. Crazy!!
My goodness, my then husband and I had our honeymoon there in 74! Fun times!
Staying at an open one was so interesting! Thanks for including that
BEST VIDEO you’ve done in a while!! Absolutely love how you’ve gone back to some places you’ve gone to years ago and actually staying in a love suite 😅 the BEST
LOVE that you were able to live history at the end 👌🏻it’s always super helpful to include visuals of the time from the places, but it’s even better when it’s a 1st hand experience
I rediscovered this channel after years and I'm so happy to see josh is still doing these cool videos exploring abandoned places!
Welcome back stick around
It’s cool to see when you first visited there I remember watching that video and to see how much time has passed its crazy to see what it looks like now your channel has grown exponentially since then is amazing
The day gets instantly better when Josh posts.
One of my favourite videos Josh, you got to see it abandoned & then it was like going back in time and seeing it, I would love to stay somewhere like this so much character & fun ❤
Oh Jeeze. I feel so old now. Hubby and I used to stay there. We had one of the indoor pool rooms and a heart shaped bed. It was so tacky lol
Just be thankful you can admit and acknowledge that now❤ lol hope y’all had fun! 😂😂
Nooo it was tacky it was kitschy!! Which is awesome!
Josh I’m dying, lol My ex & I looked into one of these resorts back in 1998 for our honeymoon… thanks so much for confirming we made the right choice by taking a 7day cruise on a boat that just hit the seas “carnival Destiney” lol great blast from the past video! Stay safe!
Hey! My husband and I stayed at one in the Poconos back late 80’s early 90’s!
A most interesting tour of the old and new at bygone romance resorts, and one in operation for two more weeks before closing. Many thanks for the video tour, Josh! 🤠👍❤
Hey Josh… 60 years old and love watching your explores!!!
I am a TH-camr also, from the PNW. ✨Washington State…✨
Thanks for taking me along! 💖
I remember the first video I watched of you years ago was of the love hotels! So cool to see you revisit it! goes to show the value and purpose of documenting these places
I love how you’re adding videos on how it was back in the hay day; it’s the perfect touch. Like pumpkin spice
There’s something healing about watching josh explore some place I explored when I was a teen!
Wow! Your video is so inspiring! I just gone back in the lost era, forgot how to breathe. Thanks a lot for that awesome journey!
This was so cool !!! To show the differences throughout the years and to actually stay in one suite!!! You are great !!
Fantastic video Josh, what a memory you will have to look back on when you get older.
Hi josh what a fantastic video thank you & i can’t believe it’s been 7 years i remember watching them doesn’t time fly and keep up the good work Josh
Hey Josh that was a great video, really good how you first visited the love hotels abandoned then actually stayed in one, you are so good at doing this 👍
The best part is seeing who you got to enjoy the room with!! I hope you two had a amazing time! And bro stop blurring out your body! Who cares what anyone thinks and nobody is perfect 💯🤜
Absolutely loved this video! Would love to see a follow up once it closes. The pocono resorts are such a vibe.
You guys are awesome keep it up. I see now why it's important to find the place still intact it's so much more interesting to see everything left in time
This episode was so fun but kinda sad to see these go. Im glad you guys could film it in the nick of time!
Yooo!! I watched you explore this resort back in 2016!!! I’m so happy you filmed there again! It’s one video of yours I ALWAYS think about!!
I went to beautiful mount airy lodge with my late parents back in the 90’s. I love the poconos and it is one of my fave parts of the country.
This was so much fun to watch Josh. But every time you said: "Back in the days.." you make me feel ancient since I lived through the 70s 🤣. Loved it, thank you.💖
This is sad that they are abandoned and closed, but you did a very good job on this video. I enjoyed it a lot a lot of information. I really enjoyed this video. Keep up the good work, Josh.
Made me feel old too by seeing how long i been watching your channel bro…missed them abandoned vids 😎🤙🏽
Its so crazy seeing how it looked in 2016 vs now. Me and my brother went there several years ago for the first time so i never got to see how it looked in 2016. There's really nothing left to see there anymore. Good thing is there's another abandoned resort not far from there. Bunch of old cabins in the woods. Wish i could have met you there tho 😂 its like 3 hours from where i live
You were there "With" your "Brother" haha you must be from WV!!
waaiiittttt i know this is an old video but this vidoe is LITERALLY how i discovered you back in 2016
Exactlyyyy
It's actually a new video. He visited twice. He was just showing a few old clips in between the new footage captured.
Me too me too
Growing up in Greenville, Delaware in the 70's, graduated HS 1984, I remembered alot of TV commercials for the "Honeymoon Love Resorts." Always thought it was cornie, weird, and creepy. Great videos!
omg 2016 josh! ;-; i think this was the first video of yours i saw! this brought tears to my eyes.
17 mins that room with the moss is absolutely beautiful I would love to go and see that.
I live near the Poconos. I've visited a couples resort in the Poconos near the casino that's still open until this day. Its awesome! I stayed in the winter with a few feet of snow so I didn't really get to utilize anything on the property. But they have two or three other resorts that you can shuttle back and forth to for free and use the amenities they offer. The one near the casino still has champagne glass tower hot tubs. They take forever to fill! I stayed in the room with the glass tower, a heart shaped personal pool and sauna. I also stayed in another room there with a small heart shaped hot tub near the bed and a smaller heart shaped pool. It wasnt as grand as the champagne glass room but it was still beautiful! The champagne room is actually two whole levels! Have you ever stayed in a hotel room that had two floors?! Website says its 4 levels. It was wild. I stayed at called Cove Haven, I believe. They also have Paradise Stream. I stayed at the one a few minutes from the casino.
Really loved this one josh..I always wanted to visit back in the day
Amazing video Josh, loved it 😊
Definitely do more like this! 👍
It reminds me so much of when I first started watching you explore! ❤️🥹
This is a great video! My husband and I will actually be staying at one of the remaining resorts this weekend for our five year anniversary. It was actually urbex vids that made me want to go there and seeing your video now has me feeling extra excited! Awesome that you got to stay at Pocono Palace before it closed!
JOSHHHH I BEEN WATCHING YOUR VIDEOS SINCE YOU WERE JUST USING YOUR SELFIE STICK AND PHONE. ITS AMAZING WATCHING YOU EVOLVE AND MASTER YOUR CRAFT. YOU ARE NUMBER 1 URBEXER IN MY OPINION ❤❤❤❤
So glad to see one up n running thank you for the video
Wow this was amazing loved this josh, a blast from the past 👏🥰🇬🇧
Damn, sad to see that place in shambles, hope to see more videos like this of yours in the future. Awesome stuff man!
Love that you included footage from 7 years ago in this video. Just sucks cause I knew about this place for a while and always wanted to go here and now a majority of it is gone and/or trashed beyond recognition.
Thank you josh, a blast from the past.
I only live 45 minutes from there it’s awesome to see you guys exploring it I never been there myself but I’m glad to see you guys there again
This was nice to watch, a lot of interesting stuff and history. Good vibes and something I didn't know was a thing. Got more than I expected. Thanks! :)
Omg i was just thinking of you josh! Loving your videos! ❤
Awesome! Welcome to my neck of the woods Josh! I grew up in the poconos. I know the exact area where you are. What a great video. The cop unaliver was Eric Frein, he was eventually found in an old airplane hangar. I actually grew up in Canadensis! I’m surprised there wasn’t much security activity, they’re usually roaming around to look for trespassers and criminal activity.
So great seeing this video. Awesome job.😍
Honeymooned there in 1977. We had a cabin with the heartshaped tub, two fireplaces, and we horseback rode to the top of Big Mount Pocono. It's a shame its one big eyesore now...or what is left of it.
This was one of the best exploration videos!! Very interesting!! I loved it!! Also, loved the way you say golf Josh! It's so cute!! It was really awesome how you made this video a before and now video from when you went back in the day and when you went now to compare how it's decomposing or being torn down. Overall, really great video Josh! 10/10!!
❤ I was also going to mention on how I LOVE JOSH when he says GOLF!😂😂
Lol 🫢 .thought Josh was going to get a little kinky
🌡❣️ 🫣
Fantastic video, the nostalgia level maxed on this one
I remember seeing all the commercials back in the day and thinking it must be the rich people that go there i'll never be able to afford to go there
I worked at Cove Haven when i was going to school and i now pass Penn Hills on the way to work. As someone who grew up in the Poconos, this was amazing to watch ❤
I've been waiting for your new videos 🤘🏻 🤘🏻
OMG. A smile on my face and a tear in my eyes when I heard that Penn Hills theme song. The nostalgia. I was only a child but remember the commercials. I miss those days.😊
fantastic josh . big fan . just love the natural decay retuning to nature . forgotten past . cool to see the past look and todays look .wow
I've never heard someone call it Galf before 😂
I absolutely love Josh's Abandoned videos!!! They give me the creepy factor with the before and after videos ❤
Been watching you for years and this is epic.
I knew this place looked familiar, I remember when you explored this back in 2016!! Wow time flies. God bless ❤
Dude longtime fan and I gotta let ya know you're the man! I really enjoyed this! I can totally relate to feeling like everything is gone and fading.. I got married in 2013 and the double tree hotel it was an icon on Ct Ave in my hometown of Norwalk. It's gone!! It's been there all my life and now it's been destroyed to make a fancy entrance for Costco!
This blew my mind, so much to see. Going back 7 years n then coming to 2024 is greatest content n edit it well. Miss the 80s telephones, that I won't forget. Love those heart shape pools, those are cool 😎.
Wow I watched this 7 years ago?! Crazy how time flies
You know its a good day when Josh uploads :D
Awesome video josh!
