Just finished disassembling my 1982 Mk II Target, thoroughly cleaning and inspecting each part. The pistol is stock and after the cleaning looked like new. Yep it was a challenge pulling every pin, especially after the last time I think was about 9 years ago. It's like a new gun, still highly accurate and after thousands of rounds, maybe two FTE, maybe two. And I think it was the ammo. Anyway, just got the Mk IV Target in stainless. With two slab side Mk IIs didn't have the need for another Hunter. When I first field stripped the Mk IV I knew this was paradise. The hell with the 72 virgins, this was paradise.
I am looking for a decent holster as well. The typical Uncle Mikes will do but I would like something different. If I find one will post. Thanks for the great videos.
I have a UM from the 1980s for my MKII that is is still in great shape and gets used regularly. The new ones suck. They are thin and wimpy and don't anything like the old ones. I found a couple kydex ones that don't protect the gun much. I will probably end up with something custom.
Jeffrey Locke You'll like this one even better. I remounted the Venom Red dot on a burris mount replacing the rear sight to lower it.. My MK II and III were stolen years ago. I’ll get the MK III back soon, but I got a MK IV 22/45 Lite and I LOVE IT! These are the best .22 pistols on the planet! I’ve done mods. It has a 1.5 lb trigger. I really like yours too and I’ll probably pick one up next time I’m home. Great shooting there!
Kornholeeoo Thanks bud. THat trigger Mod is a MUST! haha. There have been a couple more since this video. I know this video is 3 years old and here it is 20/20 and I bought me the Ruger 22/45 Lite here about a month ago and mounted me a rail and a fire field optic on it and once I got it sighted in it is a really fun gun to shoot.

I also have Mark II from 1980 and had zero problems since day one. I used DW 40 penetrating oil to clean and flush instead of taking it apart which is a nightmare. It worked all this time.
Yes sir they are very forgiving guns. Remember that 100% of ALL proceeds from this channel for the month of September are going to Hurricane Harvey relief! Share Share Share! and Thank you for watching!
I have a Mark II with the 6" tapered barrel in blue. I've never really had any problems re-assembling it because I always followed my father's advice, that when all else fails, read the instructions..... My only issue was the non-adjustable sights. If Ruger would come out with a Mark IV in blue, with a tapered 6" barrel with adjustable sights, I'd be the first one in line to buy one.Until then, I'll stick with the very accurate, reliable, all ammo gobbling one that I have.Good review!

Great Video, love your enthusiasm and nice marksmanship! I plan to get one soon, I traded off my Rugers Mark 1,2 & 3 years ago because of cleaning. Traded my mark 4 22/45 Target model because it didn’t fit my hand well so I do now know the Mark Vl Hunter is for me. I have many other hi quality.22,s we love to shoot however I feel a Mark lV Hunter will complete my collection and shooting fun with my kids.
Josh Brekke the Hogue grips are really nice for it too! You can find it here: amzn.to/3t9huPj Also I've tricked mine out wth a LOT of Tandem Kross accessories. THe trigger kit is amazing! Yup, upgrading my Mark III went through and act of Congress with it and Nancy wanted to buy it.....once ruger introduce a threaded barrel on the Mark Series I will jump in again!
Rody Outdoors Well they have had threaded Barrels for a while now on the MKIVs, just not the hunter model. Look at the ones with the 1911 style grip shape. :-) Thank you for watching! @@scottnra I did the upgrades to my Mark III, now it has a 0.6 pound trigger pull, got to see how that works in the range yet, but it is fair to say that I have fallen in love with it again; albeit its horrible mechanism to take it apart, I do not think I will sell it any more; I inquired and the person I spoke with would pay less than what I paid when it was new so no deal...yeah it could use a threaded barrel but it is what it is; all said, they are not really a bad pistol at all :)
Awesome video! We're LOVING this gun and look forward to trying it out in rimfire competition this spring. have you tried any upgrades and modifications for it yet? We've added our flat-faced trigger, charging handle and some internal parts and it's SO fun to shoot! Can't wait for more aftermarket accessories for this pistol!
Same Here TC. I looked at the flat trigger but it did not seem to include anything but the trigger itself and this gun NEEDED a trigger job right out of the box. Ruger should be ashamed to let it leave the factory with a trigger as bad as it was. I went with a Volquartsen trigger kit that solved the problem. (If you had had the full trigger kit, I would have most likely bought it.) Did a little polishing of the bolt and firing pin. I would LOVE a set of wrap rubber grips for it like all the other models have available. The factory wood ones are slick and pretty but worthless for handling the gun. I really don't get the giant charging handle things personally but I did drop a Vortex Venom on it. I really like the gun a lot. I'd love to hear more as you guys come out with more accessories for it. I shoots very well. No here is what is REALLY missing! A decent holster! Not ONE manufacturer makes a holster for the hunter model other than the Kydex one that provides minimal protection for the gun. I have yet to buy a holster, but need one badly. I would prefer one that covers most of it while carrying instead of having barrels stick out of the bottom and an an open top half. I use a 1980's Uncle Mikes Flap on my old MKII and it has been great. UM product quality has gone to crap though and they no longer offer a flap at all. The MKII has been on my side for thousands of hours over the years while hunting, cutting grass, or working on the property. I have no problem with Kydex but would like to have at least more than one option for a carry holster. NOBODY has anything else.
Thanks for all the great feedback! It's always useful to hear what kind of upgrades people are looking for. We always say that the answers are not in our building - they're with the gun owners themselves! Definitely stay tuned - we're hard at work on new upgrades :)

I'm with you on the sights. DIdn't like the Hunter ones that came with it. I've now gone through this one and turned it into more of a match gun. Thanks. I'm liking it a lot. Still need to get used to the hi viz sights. Not sure about those. I like the target sights better and can shoot better groups with them...for now. A few hundred more rounds through it will help me figure it out.

Agree that was not very smart. THey want to make sure Volquartsen doesn't make to much money on them. But, I'll bet now VQ will make some really great lowers!

Scott Gregg I have a mark III that's been disassembled for s few years now sitting in my safe because I got tired of trying to put the dang thing back together and .22lr has been hard to find. I guess now that I found a "bucket-o-bullets" on the shelf I have no more excuses. Wife liked shooting .22s so I think this will be on top of the wish list.
I hate Ruger, I had 3 10-22s back in the '80s and all 3 were jamming machines, I dislike the feel of my friend's Pre-MarkII and couldn't get rid of my Red Hawk fast enough for *less* than I paid. Now, after seeing this pistol in your video, I want one!
HAHA! That made me laugh. I've had a pretty different experience with my 10/22. As far as feel goes, I am really looking forward to the TandemKross rubber hive grips or hogue finder groove for this one. I really don't care for the wood stocks at all that it comes with and the front strap is very slick for me. Overall, this is easily my favorite handgun to shoot now. Thanks for watching. You can check out & follow the FB page for updates, suggestions, etc: facebook.com/scottgreggoutdoors/
It was never about holding your mouth right to get it reassembled.. It was about how far out and which direction your tongue needed to be in order to get it done right. About half way out, tongue curled down, like if you were cleaning that ketchup out of your beard.
I'm teetering between the Mark IV Hunter and the Mark IV Tactical. Thoughts, experiences, or comparisons from anyone? Thanks! Great video and review, Scott!
Ron Thomson Thanks Man. I guess it depends on what you are going to do with it. If you are wanting brakes or suppressor, you'll want a threaded barrel of course. Either way, the trigger is going to SUCK! Plan on $100 for VQ upgrade there. (Ruger really should be ashamed of themselves for that trigger after making us wait 30 years for this platform...) There's links below the video to the red dot I used. I've really liked the hunter after getting it modified up a bit. I've been using this one and like it. Adjustable tension, works with my Vortex Venom red dot well too. I'm going to have another shooting video coming showing it. amzn.to/2HO2Ebq
These are a lot more expensive than the Smith & Wesson Victory. Couldn't Ruger have made at least one model with a threaded barrel? Is there a drop in accuracy with a threaded barrel? Is it a lot more expensive to manufacture?
Yes they are. I can't tell you why that is but I can tell you that I love my Rugers. They have never let em down even when I shot them without cleaning them for a long time. Ruger makes a threaded BBL model in the "light" configuration. If you really want something custom, there will soon be a bunch of uppers for the the new MKIV and of course there are people out there that sell just about everything to make a Ruger into a rimfire race gun.
Scott, Bought a Hunter 4wks ago, shot about 800rds. Love the gun but had a few questions for you now that you have had yours for couple years. First my sights are continuously loosening up. I can't adjust the gun as they won't stay tight, looks like Loctite Blue is what is recommended. But I was thinking of changing sights out, any suggestions? Saw your Vortex video, are you still happy with that? Also, I have shot CCI ammo with no issues but then bought bulk Winchester M-22 ammo and about every 15th shot jams. It usually jams to the point of having to drop the mag, can't just clear by pulling slide. What ammo are you happy with, CCI is pretty expensive in comparison to Winchester M-22.
First, YES Still love the gun but have modified it to fix things like the crappy trigger that ruger should be ashamed of on a $600+ gun. THe Vortex Venom red dot is a BEAST! Absolutely love it. And yes, you need to use Loctite blue on any site on a ruger Mark series pistol. (THey will always shoot loose on my MKII and the MKIV if you don't. As for ammo, mines east pretty much anything. I have done some mag slicking work to tune them up and that might have something to do with it. There are some videos out there on how to do that. I just put a set of Hogue wrap around grips from Wirthwein guns on it and will be doing another shooting review showing them in the next week or so as well as a new set of ear muffs I have coming. Drop a VQ trigger kit in it and consider the Tandlem Kross flat face trigger. The checkering is really sharp and it reduces my trigger pull (from geometry near the bottom 1/2 of the trigger) to under 2#! Thank you for watching. I've got some really cool stuff coming too! You can check out & follow the FB page for updates, suggestions, etc: facebook.com/scottgreggoutdoors/ I usually post what's coming up there as well.
@@scottnra, do you have video links on the mag slicking which is something I'm not familiar with. I was actually going to ask if you had thoughts on upgraded mags or at least suggest where to buy additional. I have shot my father's and uncle's MKII many times which made me fall in love with that series. Then I saw the Hunter last year and put it on my list. Thankfully it's $100 less now than it was 9mos ago. Also any links on the trigger upgrade? I read where some people like the Fire Sights for open sights. Is the Vortex 1x or is it a 2x? I don't recall that being mentioned. I thought about using this for squirrel and rabbit, read where the Leupold makes a really nice scope that matches but is expensive. I feel like I would use it more just with something like Vortex because I love plinking and Target. I would hate to have to buy 2, haha!

After tax you'll be pushing it. I got it out the door for $630 using gunbroker and a local shop for the transfer. Really with the sights and the trigger needing "fixed", you might be better off to wait until TacSol makes one with all that done and pay around a grand for it. I like it better with the dot. But the trigger is still crap and I'm not liking the grips either. Too slick and "pretty" doesn't help it shoot. Ruger should be upset at whoever lest them leave the shop with that bad a trigger on them. I'd fire that guy.

Just finished disassembling my 1982 Mk II Target, thoroughly cleaning and inspecting each part. The pistol is stock and after the cleaning looked like new. Yep it was a challenge pulling every pin, especially after the last time I think was about 9 years ago. Just put ona Dot on this one. Can't wait to try that out.
There are a couple more Ruger MKIV vids on here as well you might like here: th-cam.com/play/PLYKMXAVLid5UrvbfU-2jMZrAPmfKMswtx.html

LateNite Yes they are! I can hit out to 100 yards with this rig no problem and split playing cards up close even with cheap bulk ammo!

I know this video is 3 years old and here it is 20/20 and I bought me the Ruger 22/45 Lite here about a month ago and mounted me a rail and a fire field optic on it and once I got it sighted in it is a really fun gun to shoot.
James HerefordYes sir gun review are fairly timeless as models don't change that often and these things last for generations.

THanks man. My MKII Target is still my favorite. And you're right, I can't recall the last time it jammed with any ammo.
I upgraded mine with a Volquartsen trigger kit. Absolute blast to shoot.
Greg Garmin Me too, totally agree. Shame you have to drop another $120 after dropping $650+ on a pistol but it is a great gun otherwise.

I have another video on this pistol coming to show how it's working all "Tandemised" out and after a couple years of shooting.

I have learnend so much, thanks to you!! I will follow your channel

Well if you guys need a beta tester... :-) I replaced the rear sight with the venom, and would LOVE to have a holster that would fit that just right.
hi scott, thanks for the great review!!
You're welcome Mike!
Just bought the same gun but with the wrap around target grips. liked it better than the Buckmark; all stainless!

I have this gun, it's a great gun and fun to shoot. I did change the sights to Williams Fire sights, I didn't like the V rear on the original.
I'm with you on the sights. DIdn't like the Hunter ones that came with it. I've now gone through this one and turned it into more of a match gun. Nice Shooting. Thinking about getting that Mark 4
Thanks. I'm liking it a lot. Still need to get used to the hi viz sights. Not sure about those. I like the target sights better and can shoot better groups with them...for now. A few hundred more rounds through it will help me figure it out.
Waiting for my licence and this is the piece I am going for..

I wish they would have moved the serial number to the "lower" so I don't need a dealer to buy a new "upper"
Agree that was not very smart. THey want to make sure Volquartsen doesn't make to much money on them. But, I'll bet now VQ will make some really great lowers!
Just put one on order! Wish they came in 22 mag.
That would be cool.
Volquartsen makes a 22 mag pistol!
My friend is selling his for $300 is that a good price but it's the first one you showed not the hunter and his has a red Dot scope can't miss with that thing.

i'm so excited about this!
Man, me too! Still fiddlin' with dot sights for it.
They hit a home run with the new take down mechanism; but do they not still offer the integral rings for mounting optics???
No, It's drilled and tapped for a rail though, ready to go. I've dotted mine. There will be some more videos(s) coming with it as we go. Stay tuned...
HAHA, That's about right. Not the new one though. It's very well thought out.
Mad Dawg 🤣🤣🤣
(You know TH-cam demonetized this and almost EVERY shooting related video I've ever done?!)

WHERE CAN ONE BUY A HOLSTER FOR THE MARK IV MOD 40160 HUNTER?
Heck of a .22 plinker. I gotta get one.
The Volquartsen trigger made a BIG difference! I'll have a review on that coming soon.
@@scottnra oh, and thanks for quick reply, not sure I said that in my other reply.

Try this, Buy a case of 5lb (for 100yds) & 10lb (for 200yds) sacks of flour, then paint with white primer, then DayGlo Orange/Yellow/Hot Pink and you'll (hopefully) know the satisfaction of making white clouds at *200yds with a .22 pistol.*
Oh that sounds very cool! But will a 22lr really make that big a poof on a 5# bag of flour?

Let me think about it...NO haha
you got my humor thanks great gun and looks like my old ruger 22 45 might grow legs to purchase this one. I hope its not like 700.00...
