    Gorge the gorgeous man, I play with my friends and we would play gorge all day everyday if we could, so many fun teams comps we get to do and lots of fun

    what you mentioned about pickable spawns in team games really wrinkled my smoothies! i feel like if civs were more picked to fill certain roles, like heroes are picked in moba, it would add so much dynamism to team games. especially from a casting/viewer perspective. i think besides game length, the lack of structure is what keeps team games from being as appealing to watch as 1v1s. (nomad megarandom being the exception. thats always great to watch if casted nicely)
    having dedicated pocket, flank and frontline roles could really open up the possibilities of strategizing for team players and id love to see it.
    thanks for the great video!

    I play QM more than ranked cos I like the larger pool of maps. One map that has really really grown on me since I learned build orders for fish openings is actually Danube River. It's such a fun map to play in a 4v4. The area in the middle of the river is always hotly contested, but it's hard to push *right* into the enemy bases because they're on the other side of a shallows choke point. Meanwhile, there's this wider flank route off to the left side that's harder to wall, especially since it's further away from the spawn positions, meaning while backline trade is *possible* it's incredibly risky unless your team has managed to take control of the flank side. Plus, even though the bridge in the middle prevents aggression from home docks, there's a lot of opportunities to make sneaky docks on your opponent's side of the river and aggress from there if you take control of the middle area
    Kind of a boring 1v1 map. Surprisingly fun 4v4 map imo

      I get what you're saying. Ngl Danube River is another one of those maps where there's just too much going on in every direction imo. But it's on the higher end for sure.
      In general, maps where it's really easy to wall up and trade is unfun because when the final bout happens, one team simply boomed harder, and the other team will have no idea. It'll take a 20 minute slog simply because of pop constraints to then decide the winner when the game really ended a long time ago.

      Long slogs like that are generally the exception rather than the rule on Danube River in my experience. Typically what happens is some players go for a small fish boom into either fast castle or small trade boom (like one or two markets, rather than 5 or 6), some other players go for early feudal aggression or 2TC into feudal aggression, and then the teams have to fight over both the middle island and the left flank, and balancing what units and how much to commit to either side is an interesting strategic problem. The map's weird quirks that lead to "too much going on" only really come into play if you're already heavily winning or losing. Like sneak docks only come into play if one team just has no military on the middle island, and uncontested trade booms only come into play if one team let the opponents completely stone wall the flank route

    My speculation: people like Hidden Valley precisely so they can macro and play the late game as opposed to non-stop aggression maps like Dry Arabia. It's the game play variety people want.

    • @ChillyEmpire
      @ChillyEmpire  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Probably. I guess for players who want to guarantee that late game slog experience it's nice...
      but the slog is so painful. It's like bashing your head in to a wall repeatedly. Less opportunity for skill expression and outplay when every army is maxed out and every economy is maxed out.

    Water maps is so much fun, it becomes more intensive but the options of what you can do increases. And maybe not ballanced for team games but cant you synergise your civ choises?

      I find that Hidden Valley often seperates into two 1v1s. It's the least team-based map for me

    also hybrid maps have ~5% chance to crash at any point units move near shore
    which is amazing if one team is 1700elo and the other team is, say 1400elo... then the high elo team loses 40elo points instantly (or gains +2 for a win)

    Funny, I love Himeyama, and I HATE hideout. Hideout just feels predictable and inconvenient at the same time. Position choices would make most of these team maps amazing. Golden Heights and Cliffside would be so fun if you could choose.
    Also I wish Canal was in it. I love river maps where both ships and land units attack and defend each other, not when water is a separate side game usually. But yeah Gorge is also my favorite team map atm.

    • @ChillyEmpire
      @ChillyEmpire  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Mm I get what you're saying. Hideout can definitely feel predictable at times. I don't like Canal personally, I feel like the players are too far apart in a 4x4 context.

    • @ChillyEmpire
      @ChillyEmpire  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Oh the guide is simple. If you go for a dark age barracks on that map and make 1-2 spears, you'll be able to stop enemy tower rushes while even potentially pulling off your own.
      How teammates should respond is...your closest ally needs to start making military asap to help pull you out of that situation.

    As a DOTA player I don't really get why AOE has so many maps. I'd rather rotate between 2-3 really good maps every game. As a new player, learning each map is a daunting and frustrating experience, as you usually learn the gimmick of the map by getting stomped by another player who knows the gimmick.
    EDIT: Also as a noob I really like Hidden Valley, it's a slow map and it creates interesting games at lower levels where players don't have great map awareness and games drag regardless of what you do. They do really need to sort out the sheep spawns though...
