I think you're at a point of transition in your artstyle but you're not quite there yet so it looks "worse" than the previous one. This is always kinda rough but this is where growth comes from, keep at it !

I definetly see it now that you've mentioned it, thank you for pointing it out! Definetly will put more work in to get through it!

I myself am an artist who has been drawing dragons for years. About 5 years now. I started when I was 9. Honestly, even though I'm still young, I've improved a lot! Although I know the struggle of thinking the art is "bad", even if it's just progressing into a better skill or way of drawing. It's pretty frustrating when all you see is a "messed up" drawing, but it's only transitioning into a better skill of your art. I'm going through that at the moment, the dragons I draw are now a bit.. Pointy in some areas, like the neck, and the spines ending into the tailbone, as well as the shoulders, elbows, and wrists of the wings. They didn't used to be pointy in my drawings 😅 but I think I like it, and don't at the same time, so it's honestly relatable and frustrating TuT'
But, then again, it's satisfying seeing how much you've improved over the years..

@Sazz_Creation Thank you! It's always encouraging when someone shares a similar journey! Sometimes you have to remember that progress is an up and down business, and so is art, and the result will always fluctuate! Just gotta keep at it ^ .^

From an improvement standpoint I don’t think your skill has decreased at all!
I think you leaned into the earlier design and that made it much more true to the original!! Of course it will look more simplistic and “beginner “ but in this redraw I see your execution of the dragon’s anatomy is super cool!!!
The only thing, I think, could have elevated this piece even more is giving yourself more excluded scales, you really harness your full talent in the small details and it gets drowned out by the other segments!!! For drawing an animal that has no concrete/realistic anatomy, you did GREAT!!!

Thank you! Yeah picking a different style for it felt so strange, because now instead of thinking how to one up the previous design, it's all down to the execution of the basics which puts you more on the spot! The scales definetly were fun to draw, but there's so many way of executing them, worth looking into. Thanks again!

I think this looks excellent! I wonder if as the other commenter mentioned this is a transition for you? The language of the color feels "cartoony", not inna bad way but just bold. My own art mirrors the same, and for me it's begging for harsher outlines, bold striking brush strokes, and instead it feels like the transition is kind of soft? Which leaves it... Idk, feeling a little flat? You do it so well in the eye, darker darks, lighter highlights, and hard lines.
You could go the other way, more realistic, less harsh colors and tons more textures maybe? Take references, decrease the opacity, and paint over them to emphasize certain parts maybe?
Overall, it's fantastic and I think you're improving leaps and bounds! Definitely the right choice to go less "cluttered" vs last years design.
Take what you will from all that, leave what doesn't fit.

I think you're on it! I for sure get the same feeling that they look cartoon-ish while I try to lean towards realism, so the two styles are fighting it out. Thank you for the compliments as well, I think your advice is great too, definetly applies here!

I think it’s really good, but the shadow for the scales should be transitioned with a scale texture, as you’re using a lighting, or a smooth brush to detail a rough texture ❤ but, overall it’s so Beutifull, and I believe a great improvement.
