  • @LeeOades

    In fairness, the 220 miles of the Cupra Born is still more than enough for most people! Non-EV drivers are convinced they need at least 300+ miles of range before taking the plunge and yet almost never drive anywhere near that far. Just look and see how far 200 miles is from your house, and consider driving all the way there without stopping, having a 10 minute break to fill up with petrol and cracking on for another 200 miles. You just wouldn't.

      What you say is mostly true except the problem at the moment isn't so much the range but the charge time and having to make sure you can find a compatible charger, and when you do there isn't some moron that's left the cable plugged in when their car is fully charged. BTW they could have easily dealt with that problem by fining morons for every minute they hog the charger.
      Having said that, in the summer I do about 280 mile round trips so a 300+ range for me is useful.
      Of course if you can get all your driving done for free then it makes no sense to want to pay for petrol.

    • @LeeOades
      @LeeOades ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ninelaivz4334 Obviously finding chargers at the moment can be a bit painful but the infrastructure is improving all the time. Whenever I've planned my long journeys, I head for areas with lots of chargers so I have plenty of options.
      A 280 mile round trip I assume means that you're stopped at 140 miles for a while - so probably an opportunity to charge at or near the destination.

      This is a real(ish) world test though. The figure gained from an all 70mph test would only be relevant for a journey of say 5-600 miles, with 2 stops, where the middle stint would then all be on a motorway/highway. Not many doing those trips in the UK - but plenty of channels do 1000km tests in Europe, although Bjorn recommends to charge to about 80% and only take it down to about 30 to 40% to gain the minimum charge time advantage!

I can drive in a Highway, use a national or even a B-road. It’s incredible how people need to believe their options…I experienced both of these worlds (still have my 2017 MX100D) and now that besides city driving I will not go for electric as long I have other options available….but that’s the point….I don’t tell you what to drive nor anyone tells me what to drive as well.

      Aerodynamics, lightweight (for an EV), thorough optimisation of drivetrain and ancillaries (where other cars use ICE legacy systems that may not be as efficient).
      There are downsides, though. The aerodynamic shape is not exactly pretty. Weight reduction means a lack of refinement and noisy interior.
      I also wonder if Whatcar get their efficiency numbers straight from the car's reporting, or if they measure the energy used against distance driven. ICE cars are often optimistic about the efficiency reported by the car's computer, and I wonder if that may be part of what's happening.

    The Issue with EVs is (usable Miles )
    1 - You are not supposed to charge it to 100% often
    2- you are not supposed to discharge to less than 20℅
    And expect to lose miles in the cold winter
    Thats close to 100 miles lost

    • @PeterChinkin
      @PeterChinkin ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, you're only supposed to charge to 100% (and discharge below 20%) when needed; not never, just with discretion. The truth is that most people will rarely need to use the full battery.
      When you can charge at home each night it's trivial to operate in the middle 50% of the battery if you want to slightly reduce the long term degradation (many people don't worry at all). Then, when you're going long distance, you just charge to full.

    • @DavidKent0407
      @DavidKent0407 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Tesla actually advise charging their standard base RWD Model 3 and RWD Model Y with LFP batteries to 100% once a week. LFP batteries are much more resistant to degradation than lithium ternary batteries. LFP batteries are used in the standard range MG ZS EV and all BYD EVs.

    • @markgwilt5180
      @markgwilt5180 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LFP batteries which is the newer tech in teslas and starting to see in others can be charged to 100% and discharge as much as you like as they are much much less effected by thermal deg to the point it drops a battery range over approx 1,000,000 miles just 1% faster than if you kept it at a constant 70% (optimum)

      You're not supposed to let an ICE car run empty, depending on vehicle can require effort to bleed or manually prime the fuel system again. Plus the fuel pumps are cooled by submersion. Always filling when you don't need to means you're carrying extra weight which reduces efficiency. (But I do understand your original point)

    Just run a 100km trip and your there with the consumption value.

    • @whatcar
      @whatcar  ปีที่แล้ว

      We used to do exactly this, before charging through a kWh meter and extrapolating out to get a theoretical range. It's certainly easier (and less time consuming) but also less robust. In some cars you'd be using a much greater proportion of the energy stored in the battery than in others, and efficiency varies depending on charge level. So, the cars with larger batteries that only use, say, 20% of their battery capacity would be at a relative disadvantage.

    Such a misleading results table! You have to ask yourself, 'why do most people select a particular car?' and, leaving aside those for whom money is no object, it usually comes down to cost and what the neighbours will think to a lesser extent! So, if you are trying to measure efficiency in a way that is relevant to most people, perhaps you should be looking at how much each mile of range is costing you? On that basis, for the cars that you have selected here (and where it isn't clear which trim I've selected the What Car? Pick) the results would be quite different: 1 = MG, 2 = Kia Niro, 3 = Cupra, 4 = Kia EV6, 5 = BMW i4, 6 = Tesla Model 3, 7 = VW iD5, 8 = Tesla Model Y, 9 = Volvo XC40, 10 = BMW iX3 ........... but still interesting?

    This isn't a little bit different... literally every car channel has done the 'drive EV till it's flat' test. It's not really very informative. The poor state of the charging network and how a new owner should use the '80/20' rule is more important than the cars themselves.

    • @Ben.Royals
      @Ben.Royals ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree teaching new consumers who aren't from the early adoption phase (so interested in how it all works) is more key now. Telling them to use a charger for the range they need or to only, at busy chargers, charge to 80% so they dont block a charger for longer than needs be is important. People buying EVs now aren't necessarily going to learn the ins and outs before their car arrives. Some luckily join EV groups and get info there, people like my parents have me to inform them, but many wont have this benefit. So education on EV usage is key.
