  • I restore an antique Kukri knife (Khukuri) that was old and extremely rusted. I got to use some different restoration tools to cast some brass handle pieces to pull this project together. This old rusty Kukri knife turned out really well. I hope you enjoy watching this lost tool get restored.

      Even if the handle was missing, it should have been replaced with a single piece of wood & burnt in!
      Although, I can see the reasons behind the replacement. The "India" version the I have, has a really short handle & is horible to hold. I only bought it because it was going cheap at a sale somewhere. 👍

    I have exactly the same Kukri. I had to make a whole scabbard for my Kukri - I made one from two joined pieces of plywood hollowed out to the shape of the Kukri. I measured the skin for the upholstery, stitched it on a forging machine a size smaller than the scabbard, then soaked it in warm water and stretched it over the wood. After drying and shrinking - it holds better than the glued one and the seam runs on the inside back of the scabbard.

    My folks brought back some of these Khukri from Nepal years ago - gave one to each of us kids. Now they probably look at lot like what you started with - rust and all (grandkids playing with them). I did find a slightly larger Khukri - circa mid-1600s AD - in a pawn shop near a Ghurka base in England - for roughly $15.00. No comparison. Not a 'fancy' knife - but the craftsmanship is amazing.

    I read one comment that you added more metal to the KUKRI or GURKHA 😀, that’s exactly what should have been done, the tang was so small it would broken easily. And as far as the wood goes, you did the right thing again by replacing it. Love your work, you don’t destroy items you restore and improve on them. 👍🏻

    • @solomonpachowiak106
      @solomonpachowiak106 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The tang was small because it was a ceremonial knife, genius. It didn't need to be large. These blades are special to the Kiratis and the Gurkhas. This dude just cleaned it up, he didn't restore it. A ceremonial blade used at Hindi ceremony like weddings doesn't need to be "improved", it's meant to be treated like a piece of art.

      I would hate to see your knives. This wasn't a restoration, this was just cleaning it up. These knives were used by the Kiratis and the Gurkhas for hundreds of years. These blades have a major significance; it's been used in war but also Hindi ceremonies and all sorts of shit. I mean this blade is on national flags. The decorative parts make it look like a ceremonial blade instead of a combat blade, but still. Just bringing it back to functional life isn't the same as restoring an artisan piece.

    These knifes are ornamental ones, cheap as chips, I used to buy them on car boot sales in the late 80s early 90s for pence. They came in different sizes but always the same style and design with the lions face on the pommel and the same punched patterns on the blades, very poorly made, cheap steel. I still have a couple knocking about in my shed, all rusty and knocked up. Me and my brother used to have play sword fights with them until I nearly took his fingers off one day. Ah, the good old days.
