honestly i use carbon steel mostly because you can strike a flint o n the back of it and get sparks for making a flint and steel fire if you do not have a striker with you and also it is easier to sharpen out in the field. but with stainless you have a better edge retention and is better for long use.

Usually carbon steel is better for edge retention than stainless.
And you can use other rocks instead of flint if they are hard enough

Yeah a fire steel harms the edge of course - i modified a lot of my knives on their back that i can use the firesteel as it should be used... but i also used the edge a few times netter 1cm dulled edge than no fire but of course its a shame to use the edge... but lime i said: better 1cm dull edge for a week or something lige that and then go home and resharpen it and maybe modify the back so you dont have to do that again than have no fire but you're right of course and i get your point...i know that doing this harms the edge of every steel a lot and it shouldn't be done but i know more people which don't use their knives - cause of resale value my ones getting no "original edge" they get a mirror polished if i use them for light tasks a few days - so the edge gets better not worse during unde and abuse

fucking bloody brilliant video, you see carbons make a spark and that gives a survival
    situation an advantage

  • @graham765
    @graham765 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Carbon is more durable than stainless. Carbon is easier to sharpen than the stainless knives that equal it in edge retention. A carbon knife will not rust if you just keep crap off the blade when you are done. If you use it, it won’t rust. A coating helps too. Batoning with many stainless blades is a bad idea due to the fact that it can snap if you hit a bad area in the wood. Carbon is more likely to flex.

    • @graham765
      @graham765 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Forgot to add: carbon usually throws sparks better.

That fallkniven modern bowie looked pretty cool, even though I don't really use large knives or like bowie usually. But then I looked it up and saw the price..... That's just way too overpriced! I thought maybe $300 would be fair. It's $650! No thanks. Guess I'll stick with my bravo 2 when I feel like a big knife is needed. Which is almost never, but it's fun.

Like a hammer right? A hammer is a weapon too? And a broom handle? And a sickle? All weapons right?
You demonstrated another annoying misconception. You are confusing two definitions of weapons - weapons conextually, as in "this icecicle is the murder weapon" - and weapons as objects, as in "A longsword is a weapon". In the first definition, knives are weapons, but then, everything is a weapon, including a brick, branch, keys, pillow etc. In the second definition, knives are like hammers, they are tools, which are better than most tools as weapons according to the first definition. But so are showels... So yeah.

With batoning, I think people initially think that it's the beating action that's hard on the knife. Hitting the blade's spine with a wood baton isn't that damaging to the knife, except perhaps to the pivot of a folder. The damaging stresses are in how the grain of the wood can impart serious twisting and shearing forces to the blade. You can baton hard on a thin-ish knife blade to crosscut wood grain with little risk of cracking the blade. . Drive that same blade to rip along the grain in oak, and see how a thin blade can really sharply distort as it approaches a knot in oak. That's the thing that cracks a good blade.

I don't think a survival knife needs to be stainless. You mentioned convex grinds being among the first knives. Well carbon steel knives were used successfully for hundreds of years, and are still adequate choices. I still prefer 5160 for my survival knife. But yes, the batoning stigma gets old. To think a high carbon spring steel or other modern steel is going to be damaged hammering it through wood with wood is absurd. I won't say a little knife can't do a big knife job, but I will say a big knife is better at doing small knife jobs than a small knife is at doing big knife jobs. If you've ever tried to field dress an elk with a Leatherman, you know this. Stainless steel is called stainless steel because it "stains less," not because it doesn't stain at all. Never heard the "knife people are serious," and if I did, I think I would bitch slap the person. I just had a flashback to "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels," "We need knives, big fuck off shiny ones..."

here in Yakutia where i live, we have our national knive called "Yakut knife", and they're always have a stiffebing rib on the blade, and ones who don't know (and there's a 95% of people who don't know) ALWAYS say that it's actually a groove to flow blood from victim or prey. And an animal should die from bleeding if you stab it and leave your knife. Man it's so stupid to hear, and they so convinced in this. I actually don't know how 95% of people don't know why smiths use stiffening ribs, but they KNOW for sure that it's a freaking bleeding groove. In russia this problem is exists too.

ANY time someone tells you that you should never baton with a knife, ask them, well then, should you baton with a froe? They invariably will say yes because they are morons. A froe, in essence, is a KNIFE with a 90 degree handle. WHAT?? Say it is not so! Oh, and I renamed this video. It should be 10 things people say about knives that makes Mikie B mad!

It should be called rust ressistant. Not stainless. There are diff types of stainless. You have rust resistant that is resistant to rust but will rust if u leave it in ex salt water or in regular water. Elmax is a stainless steel but it rusts after a while. Then u have acidproof steel. A4 and so on. This steel is used for maritime use. Screws and bolts is usualy made of these. Then u have the semisteel. It have some kind of rustressistance but yes. Alla steel rust. With time and missuse . :) so the term stainless is a false term but a knife that say stainless on will have a hard time to rust. :)

4:46 Batoning with a knife: however, why baton a thick 5 inch log, when it can be split with simple wedges (and not risking your knife)? To baton thick, dry sticks, say 2-3 inches thick is fine with a decent camp knife (mine is a Cold Steel Trail Master San Mai III ). Of course my knife COULD do it, but that's not the point. It's not necessary.
    5:52 Glad you agree!
7:07 What you say is just common sense! I would not dream of whittling things with my Trail Master! A Pukko, or an Izula might be much better!
8:41 The word "stainless" is actually spelled incorrectly - it should be "stain less steel"!
    10:05 A common fallacy.
11:02 Should be stated as "Knives are serious tools" ! One can, however, have a great deal of fun with them!!
Good one guys! Thanks, you idiots! 😉😉🤣🤣

Stainless steel that is in most reasonably priced knives is not the supersteel $200++ knives that you insist are not brittle. Technically you are right, but the rule still applies. Even 3v was broken by Esee themselves doing things that their 1095 did not break from. Kudos to them for showing it. Everything being equal, like price, stainless is very brittle. Do a test with a stainless vs carbon Mora. You all already know this is true, but you're used to having very expensive knives that most people don't have. For example, Mickey held up an Elmax steel knife. You really think that's a legit example? Your bias is showing. Regular stainless knives WILL break before carbon. Carbon will bend long before it breaks.

So, scraping a firesteel with the knife edge makes you sick?
Aren't you two the same guys who baton BRICKS and METAL POTS with your knives!?
But seriously, any time I see a video with someone scraping a firesteel with the edge of their knife, it makes my eyes roll back in disgust and I scream obscenities at the screen.** The only time this is justifiable is if you are in an emergency situation, have no other striker, and the back of your knife is not sharp enough to get a spark.
Also, if Maarten's family hates Mikkie, how does Mikkie's family feel about Maarten? Do they like him better than Mikkie?
** I mostly know obscenities in English, but a few in Spanish, German, Greek, and Russian. If I could actually speak any of those languages, I would probably know even MORE of their obscenities.
I don't know any Dutch obscenities. You guys want to teach me some?

Oh my brothers. You need to always carry a Little Knife in your Pocket.
And a Big-ass Knife for "survival", in your "Bug-out Bag", or whatever.
I always have a Gerber Paraframe clipped to my pocket for everyday.

    Nice video. Entertaining.

You guys... are amazing really like your videos, I prefer to see your videos instead of "serious people" because:
First: you two know and have way more experience on this a lot seriously A LOT of this.
Second: Someone who test and make things is more than someone that just talks and talks and talks and talks... and don't know who the fuck gokú is, seriuosly is offensive XD.
Thirth: You guys are having fun on this, because you enjoy and really love knives just as I has been having a really sharp knife since i was a 8 old years kid and never been a serious guy or has a cardboard face or has fear but not respect of a blade.
Respect and keep it up, thanks for sharing your passion and knowledge with us and please don't change anything on your vids, are part of the good things on the internets XD

Stainless steel "can" rust. I had a folding pocket knife for 25 years and used it plenty it more recently got a very slight thin layer of rust on the surface mixed with dirt, but was easy to just scrape it off and the knife still good. And I wasn't exactly the best at always keeping it real clean. So yes it _"can"_ but it does take long, as long as you don't keep it wet all and dirty all the time. I have seen a stainless Steel knife rust much faster being kept wet. Was left outdoors long and had rainfalls and morning dew, so it did rust faster than my pocket knife.
