- We review a lot of knives... most of them are expensive. Most of the times expensive is better right? It's true but you often pay 100% more for 10% more performance. So the question that remains is.... do you need an expensive knife to do bushcrafting, camping or simple enjoy the outdoors?

That was some of the best acting I have ever seen in my life. I don’t know who else could make knives come alive like that! Very moving and inspiring. It was a better little guy overcome the odds piece than Rocky. Time to buy another Mora.
I'd never even buy a $1600 knife unless it literally never dulled and was unbreakable. Even then, I'd be paranoid about losing it. Lost the Mora? Well, shit. Good thing I've got 2 more in my pack, and can buy 10 more when I get home. Lost the Cowry X? Be right back, gotta go drink myself to death for losing a knife that costs as much as a good rifle.
I think that's why most people end up putting it in a glass case haha
Mora would make a really good case study for Product Designers at University. Brilliant blend of good design, mass production cost savings and still being a great performer when compared to knives at least 10-100x times its price.
Reminds me of an experiment that I heard about as a kid. A group of people were given two glasses of wine to taste. All they knew was that one glass came from a bottle worth $10, the other from a $100 bottle. All of the tasters unanimously agreed that the $100 wine was better. After the results were in, it was revealed to the tasters that every single glass in the experiment was poured from the same bottle. The result? Dollar value creates the perception of actual value, either positively or negatively.
I'm no stranger to display knives and that Fallkniven sure would be. Breaking will only happen if you do crazy stuff with the knife but losing a knife is more common. Most construction workers and carpenters I saw in Sweden use Hultafors but of course Mora is used a lot also. And breaking or losing them only sucks if it's your only knife out in the bush. Sure if you have money enough get the Fallkniven but for that money you can also book a 10 day basic and intermediate course in Argentina and bring your Mora that will do just fine.

I'm a "Mora-Maniac" so to speak, among my modest collection of nine Moras, three of them are various forms of the Companion. Great design and feel in the hand for use. Best bang for the buck in the Mora line of knives.

Mora will always be my favorite. I have carried the very same knife on camping trips, scouts, military training, bbq trips and fishing trips ever since I was 6 years old. Never failed me and only costs about 30 bucks. Ngl it is very beat up and covered in dirt, but I have never needed another knife.
When you threw the Fallkniven at the board I felt some fiscal pain, I can't imagine how you felt by doing it irl

My go to knife is a mora classic no 1, just combine it with a small granfors bruks axe and you have a combo that can beat most expensive knives.
Well, I use my more expensive knives the most. For me, even one cent is too much for a tool I don't use. (My most expensive knife was about 200 Euros with sheath though.)
For sure, I look at my cheaper knives as a waste of money. my good knives go with me everywhere😁 I guess I’ll just hook up my nephew! Lol

How about Ganzo FH-805 ?
It has a decent small blade made of good steel (9cr18MoV), with a nice handle and sheat. It looks and feels not that plastic fantastic as Mora does.
@@peerx7866 The Ganzo is definitely a good knife. But unfortunately it doesn't suit my taste.
The swedge is too pronounced for me. The handle on a Mora may not be beautiful, but it is very comfortable. I see problems with the handle of the Ganzo, when I must work with it for a long time.
A budget knife that I can recommend is the Sanrenmu S708.
@@jmknives I have a SOG Field knive as well. Also a budget friendly knife, which is comfortable to work with.
@@peerx7866 That's nice too. Or from CS the Pendleton Hunter or the Bushman. But you just have to say one thing ... in Germany you can buy the Mora 511 in a certain hardware store for € 5.00. A knife like that would be sufficient for me rationally. But I am not a rational person😂😉.
@@jmknives Ah, the 511 costs approx. 8 euro here in the Netherlands. Nice knife, no remarks. Also no remarks about the CS Finn Bear. Have also a SOG mini pentagon, a SOG NW Ranger and a SOG X-42 Recondo, which is very rare to find .... :P

Mora knives are the best bang for the buck for bushcrafting knives.I bought my father in law one for hunting and he said he'd never buy another buck knife.
You guys really need to review the new bps knives... full tang, wood handle, included leather sheath,carbon steel, all for like 10 bucks more than a mora.. the hk1s or the bp3 (which looks like a mora) are amazing for the price

Here's hoping BPS knives comes out with a Chopper knife in the future. Right now I think the "closest" knife they have to a chopper is the Adventurer which isn't really a chopper.
BPS 1066 holds a edge better than Condors 1075 not sure how, it must bw because of a better heat treatment process.
In fact I can't tell a difference in Edge retention between BPS 1066 steel and some of my 1095 steel knifes.
@@flipflat4814 I actually prefer bps 1066 to all my 1095 knives , and even more than moras carbon (which I heard is around a 1080-1090 carbon) I think it has to do with the extra toughness that the slightly less carbon does to the blade.. these puppies can really bend and spring back into shape, and I have yet to chip one ... I had a bps that was bent from the factory (they replaced it for free and let me keep the bent one) and I spent 2 hours with a vice and no matter how much I bent the blade , it would always go right back the the original slightly bent shape... was almost certain I was going to snap it in half, so I just left the bend in it and gave it to my nephew as his first belt knife... he can’t tell, and the thing still cuts like a laser

Love your vid! I think the whole experiment boiled down the subjectivity of a cutting tool. Of course the cowry steel recipe cant be matched by the Companion. When it comes to being pragmatic about it, you said it well- its what one is after that will decide which one to purchase.

That is the point, wich knife is for use, and wich knife is for collecting..on the fishtrawlers are Moraknifes used for processing the cought fish, not an expensive chefknife ...they fishers know why...same to bushcraft...Mora or Jakarripukko are great sturdy knifes for the hard job... Nice video
I can't tell you how many nails, staples, screws, etc I've pried out of wood with a mora working as a carpenter.
And this is exactly what it boils down to. Buy a knife that can do what you need it to but not feel bad abusing the hell out of it

I did too, but the newer colour version handles, don't feel like the old ones and the edges are not perfect as they used to be, but that's the last thing I care because we always have to sharpen new knives. I care about the handle ergos and feel though...just a bit different. So, go for older stock Moras, if you go to buy any Mora again.

I have only one knife that I use everyday Terävä Jääkäripuukko 110, it has been in use for 1,5 years, it is still razor sharp and most of the blade is still there after all the sharpening, and that sheath will probably outlast me after all those bee wax treatments that I have give to it xD

Processing and making this steel is very expensive. Fallkniven themselves have to pay alot to get this knife made with all the materials!

If its about style points points in the woods, the Fällkniven would win. Hands down. Not otherwise against a Morakniv.
This is how I like to roll play with mine knives
Its why i love my garberg so much.
Its stupid solid, easy to sharpen and has decent retention. I mistreat it without a care in the world and baton through knots and it honestly powers through.
Yeah its 10x the price of the companion, but with how i use my garberg im pretty sure ibwould have gone through multiple companions so far.
Its still 16x less expensive than that ultra knife... but honestly it holds up as well as i need it to hold and "extra performance".... really isnt needed.
I would be afraid to sharpen a 1600$ knife on a rock. IF it CAN even be sharpened on one.
The Garberg CAN be sharpened on a rock and will still work and do its job without making you cry for ruining an overpriced piece of steel.

Mora companion all day every day a great knife a great price point at £10 here in the uk ideal for everyday tasks easy to sharpen nice lightweight carry
I own many knives, including custom knives now. I think if you look at a knife as a tool it’s hard to argue that most people need anything more than a companion. I love my nice knives, including customs in magna-cut and laminated K390, and the DBK knife but realistically it’s just because I enjoy them (sharpening, looks, geometry, ect) not that they are meaningly more useful than something like a mora companion for the most of the things that I use knives for.

I've yet to find a better knife for field dressing through boning-out game ,than the Mora Companion Carbon. It's thinner blade stock makes work out even better than the stainless version. For what it's worth, up until recently, didn't even know battoning and feather sticking was a thing you do with a knife.I wouldn't spend 1600$ on a gun, let alone a knife.

WELL the solution is a Mora and a DBK sharpener PS my favourite knife is not a fixed blade and they don't make them anymore its a Kershaw Tilt, I'm sure the guys at blade Hq have them in their personal collection.
