I agree with you completely that the process should never be this complicated. Shame on Sony for not caring enough about its customers to make the process simple.

Can I kindly suggest to call Sony Camera support if this doesn’t work. I read and watched all the steps on TH-cam and via Sony and I could not get this to update with MAC. I spent a day on this and finally called Sony and they walked me through in about 8 minutes. There is minutia in the steps that vary with each version of the Mac OS and you will save TIME by having Sony hold your hand. Thanks!
