    This scene really is a masterclass in writing, directing and especially acting. JT Walsh was one of the best character actors ever. Everything he did felt so natural and memorable. This performance is no exception. His timing, line delivery, pauses, hand gestures, facial expressions etc. make you feel like you’re watching an actual textbook narcissistic psychopath who you would never want to meet in real life. Brilliant performance. BBT also gives one of, if not the best performances of his career. Just a brilliant movie all around.

    the dragging of the chair and stare for anyone to challenge him...crossing karl’s line in the sand and invading his solitude...the depth of this short bit of dialogue...karl’s wincing at the crassness of it all until the corners of his mouth tremble....it’s all A+.

      @Paul Gardner it's not even remotely based on Lucas, but yes, he did lie about a lot his crimes to get more fame. He'd confess to many crimes he couldn't have possibly been there to commit. His false confessions had cost the courts so much money and time because of the sheer number of cases that had to be reopened. The person that Dexter is based on is Pedro Filho, who wiped out several gangs and then further added 47 kills while he was incarcerated.

    I worked in a mental institution years ago as a maintenance man. When i first started, the veteran maintenance men gave me a set of rules on day one.
    "Guard your tool belt." Your screwdrivers, prybars, certainly my utility knife and above all my hammer, the preferred choice of the psychopathic schizophrenics favorite tool of attempted theft from your belt.
    We had to guard our tools like they were sidearms.
    For obvious reasons. It was an unnerving job at times. But the orderlies helped to keep an eye on the most mental cases. The orderlies also forewarned us of the most violent offenders. Mmmhumm.

    The writing is fantastic. The bit about JT's charactor being infatuated with the way he rolled up and lowered the window using "electric power" perfectly falls in line with the kind of psychosis his character apparently has. Although they couldn't resist giving the character the unspoken last name of Bushman.

    There is something that sets Thornton apart from other "disabled" performances. It's gotta be the poster, he looks like a typical American working man in the south, and then he starts talking and you see what the catch is. But aside from how he talks, him being hunched over and dressed like a farmer everywhere he goes, his portrayal still entails a guy that looks and acts kind of the same as most people would. In other words, he doesn't gloss over or over do the part, he plays it as naturally as it comes. I could see Karl Childers as a real person because of this.

    J.T. Walsh was definitely a great actor during his short-lived career. He definitely started in a lot of films during the 90s that were exceptionally good along with his performances. It’s too bad he’s gone because he would have definitely become more famous if he didn’t die early on.

    • @theonemodifier
      @theonemodifier หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, as a matter of fact. It was one take! I played the Crayon Man, the long haired guy at the end of the table. After that incredible one shot scene, Billy Bob and others watched the playback in the other room and everybody applauded. Then they set up the camera for the next shot, when he leaves the room to go do his interview. Then they set up for the very last shot, when Billy Bob tells JT to leave him alone. JT walks away and comes and starts playing with my hair on my arm. He was that brilliant, he was not directed to do that. Unfortunately the camera zooms in on Billy Bob staring out the window for the very last shot, and it didn't catch what JT did.

    JT Walsh plays the part of complete psycho sssooo well. The way he seemed to draw out & play into certain memories of what he did, the way he pulled the car up beside her, the way he pulls the car down into a secluded spot.
    These are things that real psychos relive over and over. He gets over looked for such a short role, be he does it better than 99% of actors could.
