This scene really is a masterclass in writing, directing and especially acting. JT Walsh was one of the best character actors ever. Everything he did felt so natural and memorable. This performance is no exception. His timing, line delivery, pauses, hand gestures, facial expressions etc. make you feel like you’re watching an actual textbook narcissistic psychopath who you would never want to meet in real life. Brilliant performance. BBT also gives one of, if not the best performances of his career. Just a brilliant movie all around.

Proud to have been in this movie as the crayon man, i'm the long haired guy at the end of the table coloring. Had lunch inside in the a/c with JT, while everybody else ate outside in the heat. So cool that JT came and sat with me and one other person inside a room in the old state mental hospital, we talked and told stories and jokes.

I remember watching the 1998 Academy Awards, they did a tribute to film industry people who had died.. These big name stars and even directors and writers were getting big applause, when they showed the photo of JT Walsh, it was like 10 people in that audience clapped....like they didn't even know who he was. I felt a big hole in my heart. JT was such an under rated actor.

JT Walsh plays the part of complete psycho sssooo well. The way he seemed to draw out & play into certain memories of what he did, the way he pulled the car up beside her, the way he pulls the car down into a secluded spot.
These are things that real psychos relive over and over. He gets over looked for such a short role, be he does it better than 99% of actors could.

When I was fairly young, I worked at a psychiatric hospital in the food services department. One day My assignment was at meal time to take the food cart into the locked unit. “Residents” were served, we waited for dinnerware and utensils counting all before leaving. I unlocked the door with the keys, but forgot to take them with me as I exited. When I realized they were still in the lock - inside, this patient pushed the door shut, locked it and pulled the keys out and waved them at me from inside. That half smile he gave me scared the bejesus out of me, just as when they told me don’t let them get behind you.

Couldn’t say as patient confidentiality was King. However I can say Hollywood and the rich did use it regularly as it was in the rural southwest at that time a former tuberculosis asylum run by an order of nuns. A beautiful place with a grotto, chapel, Swimming pool, bowling alley very serene and secluded. Even had a huge tree located in the atrium of the lock unit. Patients would climb up and stay for a while and the would be aloft and visible as you drove up the entrance. Ah good times.@@patrickc3419

in real life-Thorton grew up in tar paper shack in huge family with no running water or plumbing in which the mother was bringing men over and doing them right out in the open as they do in areas like that. however at his age if kids hear or see stuff like that they view it as someone is molesting or raping their mother. For that reason kids that grow up in those conditions have alot of anger and later on will do movies and such showing the anger such as this one where Thorton then makes movie where he kills the lover and then the the mother finding out she was "in on it and part of it". so the movie was made simply to show his true anger and pain while growing up. notice how the movie flirts with prostitution since the huge family being so poor the mother likely was getting extra money so Thortons childhood did not associate sex as a loving thing with a father but an act of drunken violence with multiple partners that hurt his feelings growing up and likely everyone else in the family. so he made the movie to show what he truly wished he could have done. The kid of course represents Thorton at that age in which the drunken abuser represents the men coming over and the nicely mother taking part in terrible affair with abuser--therefore Thorton also KILLS HIM with lawnmower blade. there is my opinion and Thorton agrees in interviews he is doing movies and stuff related to his life and growing up. many great movies are actual secret stories from the actors or producers lives.

JT Walsh was an amazing actor. He genuinely scared the shit out of me in this movie. In Breakdown he was just incredible too. I've yet to find an actor who makes me feel the tension like he did.

The thing about JT Walsh, he's got lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eyes. When he comes at you he doesn't seem to be livin'... until he bites you, and those black eyes roll over white.

I agree, I also feel it has a weird, timeless or maybe primordial sense to it also. Really interesting choice, its perfectly fitting here but also very different than a lot of composers would have probably done for the movie. But it works so well I couldn't imagine anything else being better fit.
