The fact that they didn’t need to cheat is the main reason they get so much public backlash. They were a likable team that was easy to root for. I’ve been a ranger fan for 40 years, and even I was rooting for them in 2017. The general public was behind them, and when the news broke that they cheated, a lot of people felt stabbed in the back. Astro fans can complain all day about being hated, but it was a purely self inflicted wound.
Bro Astros were a scapegoat. We weren’t the only ones. Obviously there were other teams doing it before and after the stros. They just wanted to blame a non coastal elite team
@@wesleyantrim6648why? If other teams are cheating and you beat other cheating teams while cheating who cares?why don’t the 2018 redsox get more flak? We won in 2022 so it really doesn’t matter. Kiss the rings
@@elijahcraig7976 because the Red Sox and Yankees have been around for a century and pretty much everybody had already formed an opinion on them. They either love them or hate them. No cheating scandal was gonna drastically alter how the general public viewed them. The Astros were virtually a clean slate. There was no reason for anyone to hate them on a national level. So when the 2017 team came along with what was an incredibly likable team, basically everybody outside of Southern California was rooting for them to kick the dodger’s ass. And people felt betrayed. I’m not saying it’s fair that Houston caught the lion’s share of the scrutiny, but it is what it is.
He prides himself as a man of faith, as there's a drive into deep left field by Castellanos and that'll be a home run. And so that'll make it a 4-0 ballgame.
Yeah, and that's probably what makes it such a Greek tragedy: we won't ever know because, even though they likely would have won, they still brought the questions upon themselves by cheating.
Broke: The Dodgers would've won the World Series Broke: The Yankees would've won the World Series Broke: The Red Sox would've won the World Series Woke: The Angels would've won the World Series
I agree with this 100%. If they didn't cheat, they would've still had a successful season. Would they still have won the WS? I'm not sure. Everyone wants to criticise the offense for cheating but forget just how elite their pitching was that year. It's debatable that the Yankees were robbed of a WS appearance, but they only scored 3 runs on the road against the Astros with no multi run games. The Dodgers, on the other hand, I feel less bad for because they still lost 2 games at home where the Astros were not able to steal signs which is another point to drive on why they didn't need to cheat. Both teams were robbed to a degree, but I think the Yankees were robbed harder (because they held a 3-2 ALCS lead after game 5).
I'm an Astros fan and I was so happy that I was able to see them win their first championship unaware of how long they struggled to do anything for most of their history. I was devastated when the scandal broke but I held faith because they were still a great team despite the cheating. they proved me right because they won legit in 2022 with what I think was an even better roster thank 2017.
2017 Astro's pitchers had military grade magnets in their baseballs and catchers mitt. This clearly affected pitch speed, spin rates, and pitch locations and you completely overlooked this fact.
The fact that they didn’t need to cheat makes it even worse that they did. Also I’m a Yankees fan, yeah they didn’t score but it’s so frustrating that they got so close despite the team they were facing cheating. Did they deserve to win? Probably not. Is it frustrating? Absolutely.
Im a lifelong Stros fan. I remember as a child my bedtime was when Brad Lidge came up to pitch. The fact that the Stros are used as a scapegoat for cheating in the MLB is wild. So many teams cheated and “got away with it” over the years such as the Yankees/Reds/Giants/Jankees. I love baseball but Good Lord, so many teams want every advantage they get and some scrape by and some get caught red handed. That’s how it works.
Gaylord Perry admitted to cheating and got in the HoF. We had that whole spidertack incident. I don't like the Astros, but it's not because of the cheating, cause who cares that much about that? So many teams benefitted from the steroid era, it'd be kinda hypocritical. They got their punishment, it probably should have been more than it was, but anyone up in arms about serious moral complications obviously hasn't watched this sport for very long, it's not something I'm gonna spend that much time dwelling on.
I agree with the title of this video. However, before watching the full video, I think it's important we should all agree that regardless of the effect, cheating is wrong and we should put the * next to their world series win because they knew they were doing wrong. It's sad that they probably could have never used a single trash can bang and still won. Corked bats have virtually no effect on distance and power, and until we have AI stealing signs to make sign stealing more effective, sign stealing probably has very little, if any, advantage for knowing a pitch a quarter of a second before it's thrown. Spider tack and steroids however should be met with much serious punishments. I'm curious what the pitchers were using on their balls in 2017-2019, considering Trevor Bauer earned the scorn of MLB for calling them out for it. I bet Verlander has been loading the ball with tack for most of his career. Umps should be testing the balls way more often, and give them half a season suspension for their first offense. Yeah, I'm mad that Zack Greinke has pitched better than all these other pitchers of the past 20 years, but hasn't gotten the credit because he's one of the very, very, very, few in MLB not using tack.
The problem with sticky stuff and steroids is that everyone was using it so you can't say that cheating is a unfair dissadvantage. That said the numbers show that sign stealing isn't very effective which is likely why the team stpoed doing it
7:56 It's almost like...something changed....maybe his spin rate went up a little bit? He got better sticky stuff I bet. Someone in the Astro's organization probably created a great substance to up all their pitchers' spin rates.
That's definitely one of my theories about the Astros. There was a lot of guys that came in that were meh and became good all of a sudden. I do think they had better sticky stuff than everyone else
@silentstorm5439 you're probably right, doesn't mean they cheated tho as there were no guidelines for that in mlb at the time. Reminds me of another time so many still grumble over even tho what those hitters did was perfectly legal at the time as well😂😂😂😂
@@thecaveman3503 oh yeah lol i ain't saying they cheated by it. It took the MLB a couple of years to finally ban the substances. All teams were using it at the time, but the Astros definitely seem like they created the best one
