This is a fair demo from a regular dude. It represents 99% of drivers that would need to use that tool if necessary. Now imagine if your car is sinking in the lake and you have to pull out the seat belt cutter before you even start to cut. Too much stress before you realize your seatbelt cutter is worthless. I personally never understood why someone would ever want a seatbelt cutter if your blade has a lot more real estate, to begin with. Just keep it sharp and it won't fail you should you need it.
I think it is so if you fall emediately after cutting the belt you have less chance of stabbing yourself. Hell he almost stabbed himself a couple of times it looks like and it was a zero stress situation. I admit the seat belt cutter sucks ass and there should be a better solution, but an open blade isn't anymore safe.
Get a 12 dollar swiss tool, it cuts through the belt in 1/2 a second. I own one. I've tested it on a throw away belt. It goes through like nothing, just make sure you don't have slack in the belt or it will ball up.
Can confirm. Looks cool in theory but in practice it's garbage. I recently had to cut two seat belts at work and decided to try out my Smith and Wesson pocket knife. It took like 5 minutes to cut them. The second one I gave up and used the knife blade which worked instantly. While the first belt I cut was done only with the belt cutter, it took about 2 minutes with some elbow grease. If you were in a situation where you needed to use it you'd probably be dead before you could cut the belt.
Things like Resqme work much better than any cheap pocket knife. I'm glad I saw videos like this so I know that my cheap pocket knife's "seatbelt cutter" (and probably the "window breaker" too) is not worth risking using.
To cut the belt with a knife grab the belt where it comes out the bottom by the door and poke the knife through the center and then cut in a upside down r shape (driver side left hip area) as you pull three slack out the belt.
The seat belt is much more rigged after a car accident. I’ve never used one but I imagine it might make it easier to cut through than a loose seat belt.
Ha! Thank you! I just purchased a knife with a seat belt cutter and tried it out unsuccessfully...which brought me to this page. The knife does have a serrated edge, so thanks to you, I'll be using that in an emergency 👍
Appreciate the tries. I'd like to see you try one of those seatbelt cutters that you buy special for just that purpose, and that go on your keychain. I wonder if they work.
I’d recommend to get a Gerber or Ontario seat belt cutter, they cut amazingly and are the easiest to use, but yes a sharp knife or serenaded blade works good
I have a Kershaw Barricade and I tried using the belt cutter to cut off part off a belt from a baby car seat to convert it to booster...it didn't work no matter what I tried. I then used the actual blade and it cut through easily on the first try.
Try the RescieMe tool. It's costs about $10 a piece and can be carried on your key ring. Is two pieces, a blade protector with keychain connector and a seat belt cutter/ spring loaded carbide window breaker. I'd you get trapped in your behicle you reach up to your keys in the ignition switch and pull on the cutter/breaker part and it separates from the other part attached to the keychain. It's also sharp enough to cut clothing without accidently cutting someone who is injured if you need to remove it to access their injuries or make tourniquets .
ch0k3 p01nt I like the idea of a keychain one (me personally I don’t liken to put stuff on my key chain) I will go on to buy a Gerber seat belt cutter Mollie panel so it’s always by my hand. Watch that video I think you’d enjoy that accessory however they only make it for Jeep Cherokees
Try using an actually seatbelt cutter instead of a POS gas station knife with a slot and cheap blade. A real seat belt cutter has a U-shaped blade with a surface area of about 3/4 inch. I work in corrections and we use them to sever nooses when an inmate attempts suicide. I’ve cut through a 1.5 inch braided bedsheet in a single stroke, so they’ll go through a seatbelt like butter if you know how to use it.
The point of the video is the cheap gas station ones don’t work, I said in the video and description that dedicated ones work amazing, like the Gerber and ontario ones
Thank you, I have always guessed that no way in #### would these dedicated belt cutters work. I wouldn't go with a 'sharp' knife either, I'd go with a decent knife with a good portion of it being serrated. If you/we need to cut our seatbelt loose, it is likely that we only have a few seconds, like an RNC 4 or 5 seconds and its over....
Lolol xD yeap... thats it. Thats what he did xD he used the window/glass breaker to break in... and THEN the belt cutter and knife blade to cut the seatbelt ;) xD lolol
That’s a good question, i do not know. I have some industrial scissors that cut just about anything,I would assume a good pair of scissors would work. Now some medical shears/“penny cutters” I would bet money that would work.
@@blueindigo3237 go to amazon search life hammer, it’s the second one down, 2 hammers for $10.97-- that thing rips through a seatbelt faster than you can blink
It's a shame the seatbelt cutters (at least cheap ones) don't work. It looks as if the first seatbelt cutter you used sorta worked. It went through half the belt. I wonder how long it would take to cut it all the way through with a seatbelt cutter.
Do it with opposite hands from how you demonstrated. On driver side, hold belt with right hand, cut with belt cutter using left hand. On passenger side, hold belt with left hand, cut with right hand. You had too much slack doing it the opposite way.
Perhaps taking a few minutes to research how to use a tool before fumbling around with it would help. You took the time to do a video to debunk something - you could have learned how & why these are created and used. Just owning a tool doesn't mean you suddenly by osmosis have even the teensy skill required to use a tool. Properly used, they go through seatbelts like a hot knife through butter, much faster than wrestling with the blade.
Thanks man. Also, I appreciate the video, like, jeez.. I had no idea most of these things were so weak and poor at ACTUALLY cutting seatbelts. Lol thats why my reaction is so confused-like. Lol
@@levidavis1093 I honestly thought they’d cut better but glad I know now, I mention in the description the real belt cutters work best there are also other videos on TH-cam about them

The Gerber seat belt cutter does work for this kind of thing, the way its made means it’s compliant with UK knife laws as well
