Through the Lens: Raccoon Island

- The BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico contaminated several large colonies of birds nesting on Louisiana's barrier islands.
On July 11, 2010 members of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology multimedia team documented an oiling event that occurred on Raccoon Island - one of the largest nesting colonies for pelicans and terns in the region.
Cornell Lab photographer and cinematographer Gerrit Vyn shares video and photographs from the island and describes the scene as he saw it.

@osprey02 I was referring to the brief moments of carelessness that initiates a disaster of such magnitude...and obviously by the video, it is far from being over.

deeply heartbreaking. No one has the right to do this kind of damage. This is equivalent to a genocide. Humans are a real danger to this planet, everyone of us.
oh god we have to do something don't we I don't want these poor babies dying because of oil
I know this is an old video, but did you do anything about it? You know, like catch some of the birds, clean them and return them to the wild?
It used to be that they'd wash birds with Dove Dish Soap to rid them of the oil, unfortunately it does nothing for their oil damaged lungs....

So very sad the damage man can do to Nature in the blink of an eye. It is now April 2011 ~ is there any oil left in the water, on the shores to still further poison these wonderful creatures? :(
