What an amazing experience you both went through! I have only seen these snow owls in national geography videos !! I love them as they look so out of this world !!!

The high Arctic is a unique place. I had the opportunity to go there in 2014. Heading along the coast from Iqaluit to Resolute . One day the sea was as calm as a mirror. We observed a pair of Snowy Owls feasting on Lemmings. It was a wonderful trip with a lot of wildlife (walrus, whales, different kinds of seals, polar bears, birds). Not good for us but good for nature the sea ice blocked our way into the Northwest Passage so we had to return to Frobisher Bay, stopping at the cliffs of Akpait, a big bird colony its pinnacles towering the coast like some fairytale castle. I know, I'll return some day, if not to Nunavut than perhaps to Greenland or northern Norway or Svalbard.

Wonderful video. Very interesting to see the landscape, hear how you found the birds and hear the different vocalizations.

These are the kinds of things that I want to do. It's the whole reason I chose to go into wildlife ecology; to have the chance to go places, see things, and do things very few people get to do.

I appreciate your astute observations about the remoteness and vastness up there. LIke any personal/intense experience, it can't be described nearly as well as we'd like...you just have to go there to get it fully. Your stills, video and audio recordings are just excellent. I wish I could have been up there with you both. Really a great job, Gerrit and Martha. Thanks and Happy New Year!

I am really curious, why do birds migrate to a very cold place to twitterpat like the sandpipers that are from warm sunny beaches?
Nature truly amazes me. I am learning a lot from watching the animal behavior (birds). These videos help a lot. Thank you for a wonderful Video.

WOW! This is so amazing. Thank you so much for sharing this. I've never ever seen a snowy owl. I've seen a few photos, but nothing as exquisite as this.
The photos and videos are amazing. Really excellent.
I know y'all went for the sanderling, but the owls are my favorite part of this fantastic video.
So, Thank You Thank You Thank You!
ps.. what is the difference between sanderling and sandpiper?
    Thanks, --Deborah Flowers

Excellent recordings and photography of the North American Continent's avian fauna. And yet, in almost all instances (except those involved in activist preservation and protection), Man today, is unquestionably the sworn enemy of God's creation! Bird specie populations (and other fauna and flora) are rapidly declining throughout the world, as the human population bomb continues to explode, wreaking havoc on ecosystems and habitats in the biosphere. Overdevelopment (too much industrialization and urbanization) may be rapidly fulfilling Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring" prophecy?
