- Hi guys! In today’s video we will be discussing the VAT (value added tax) refund and the process of how to navigate the Detaxe process. I will be starting from collecting forms from the store to the scanning process at the airport. I’m sorry I’m confused, I am going to Paris but I can’t bring back more than $800 worth of items? And it’s tax free but when you get back to the U.S you have to pay taxes?
Thanks so much for this info! When you went to the VAT person, was your Birkin still inside its box? Been reading about this and apparently items need to be new and unused for you to get the VAT refund? Also, curious as to how you brought home your items, boxes and all! I’m glad it was helpful I was so lost! And when I showed my Birkin it wasn’t in the Box but I was careful not to take off any of the packaging (because I heard the same about it being new and unused). I got all of it home with two checked bags and one carry on. I had my bags in the carry on and boxes I put on the bottom of the luggage and then stacked clothes and stuff inside. Thank you for sharing your Paris shopping experience! For your appointment, do you have to make it while you are at store or you can make it ahead of time?
Hi! You can make the appointment before you go through the online system but you don’t know if it will be accepted until that evening and you would have to be at the store the next day. So if you plan on flying in I would try to make the appointment starting the day before you are set to arrive. Hope this helps

You did not mention how much you had to pay in taxes for your Birkin when entering the US! Would you please help me with that information?
I believe that it was around 9% so about $675 for the Birkin. Hope this helps

Was the Birkin your first purchase at Hermes? I was told you must first establish yourself as a customer with Hermes before you're allowed to purchase one.
Hi! This was my second purchase in the Paris store. The first purchase was a pair of shoes. Check out my videos on unboxing my birkin and information on the hermes appointment . It has a few more of these facts.

Do stores (luxury stores) still ask for physical passport when they help fill out the paperwork? Or can a passport photo work nowadays.
I had to show my actual passport. Hope this helps in your travels

I’m not sure about DETAXE in London but I did try to research this response for you and it looks like if you purchase in store and have shipped to an overseas address may be the best way to claim VAT refund. Hope this helps

If I paid in cash, can I still get the tax back on my card? Do credit cards charge fee for it?
Hi! From what I understood the card you wanted it to go back on would have had to be presented to them at check out that’s the information they use to return the tax. I was not charged any credit card fees for the process. Hope this helps

Do you need to pay custom taxes when you get back to USA ?
Yes you do. When you get back you will go through customs and you will have to pay taxes on the bag. I believe I gave some examples on those numbers in this video
