I remember reading the harrowing ending to The House of the Spirits on a bus from Medellin to Cartagena (Colombia). I couldn't stop weeping, it was so sad and so powerful. And while I was somewhat embarrassed being a grown man crying in public in a culture known for machismo, I also knew that my politics and the way I see the world and go my way through it had changed forever.

It's still a story because the information is not widely known and the same horror continues to this day. Members of my family would never believe it happened. The story needs to be told because in this dangerous period many too many want to whitewash history, one of the latest attempts now happening in FL as to teaching that slavery benefitted the slaves, etc. That's why it needs to be told.

    • @Rick_Riff
      @Rick_Riff ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@jellybean6778 yeah but we don't hear the story how American parents are forcefully separated from their kids everyday. Everyone knows about America's slavery, we hear it constantly. We never hear how the British navy forced countries in Africa and the middle east to end slavery. If we are going to learn about it, how about learning different aspects instead of being told the same exact things over and over again.

What a horrific world… when it’s so bad that you voluntarily place your children on a train too… ? Knowing you will probably never see them again! Hoping beyond all prayers, that they will be safe. The family separation at our southern border was the risk the parents were forced to take, in the hope against all odds to make it to the “other side”! They were tracking women’s periods, but forgot to keep track of babies!

omg a hundred million refugees in the world. And our country, so wealthy, with so many resources still cannot open its doors to desperate refugees and migrants fleeing from the most horrible circumstances. And of course the US has had its part in making the lives of so many poor people so desperate - the CIA in Central America, the military in Africa, the Middle East and … We have a responsibility to make right what we’ve done in the world. And don’t we need these people to reinvigorate our labor force, enrich our culture and infuse our educational system.

Gmornin I must say we as American citizens should also realize that children born here are also being separated by their families under COUNTY DCFS under child abuse and neglect and knowingly its abuse or neglect them terminate your rights under false accusations then there starts the race to get your kids back... please know this is happening here.... my family iui s also victims of this unusual system that needs to be shut down. Warsaw Shire
    Home
    No one leaves home unless
home is the mouth of a shark
you only run for the border
when you see the whole city running as well
your neighbors running faster than you
    breath bloody in their throats
the boy you went to school with
who kissed you dizzy behind the old tin factory
is holding a gun bigger than his body
    you only leave home
when home won’t let you stay.

There's no other female authors in Latin America to interview?
There's nobody else besides Isbel Allende?
This is the only one Democracy Now can give a platform to ?
I wanna see and hear more female Latin American authors, especially Black and Indigenous ones, not just the ones who are already famous.

Slavery is a disgusting comparison to children at the Border. The slaves had no choice. People who violate American Law for economic purposes get no sympathy. Reparations Now‼️

These Americans walking up the continent to the US also don't have a choice. When your people came from Europe to this continent they didn't come because they had it good over there. They came because they were starving, no work, injustice etc. In American countries the US has imposed governments for the sake of US corporations exploiting resources. By doing that they've created extreme poverty and these Americans walking up the continent have "no choice", if you don't take action you starve, die or get murdered. Just like your European ancestors wanted a better future in a different continent that wasn't their these people are actually Americans from this continent also want opportunity for their children and grandchildren.

I often feel I’m not strong enough to hear the truths on DN. I’m still glad they are telling those truths. We don’t have to be strong all the time, as long as we don’t stop caring.
