Lone Peak 5 - After 100 Miles

  • With the introduction of Ego foam in the Lone Peak for 2021, I thought that the Lone Peak 5 would be a perfect trail shoe for me. And in some ways, it very much is. It's comfortable, grippy, and can handle long days on feet. But over the last 100 miles, I've realized that there are certain situations where I might not reach for the Lone Peak 5

    I had identical experiences with the LP 4.5. Too roomy for downhill and taking on curves, causing my feet to slide around inside them, but the shoes certainly had great grip on the trail surface, no problems there. I don't run in my LP's, I just use them for walking trails because they have such good traction on the sandy/loose gravel tracks I walk on and they are so very comfortable. Best hiking shoes for me.

    love this shoe. Did a 50k in them back in June. Held up wonderfully. Feet felt great. However, if I were to go 50 miles, I'd probably opt for something with more cushion like the Speedgoat. Or maybe I'd start with the LP and switch shoes along the way.

    Great review, I feel the same way; step-in comfort is great, the upper is durable, but I worry about the compression of the midsole. Outsole is wearing in the usual spots but the wide fit is perfect for those of us with wider toebox areas... it can be a little loose going downslope just because of that weak heel area and the lack of secure wrap but it's a shoe I keep reaching for...

    I've been running in Altra's for a few years and always used the superior for trail runs, in the last year I started using the lone peak and I love it now. Ran my first (and second...) 50 miler in the 4.5.

    Use the top lace hole and do a runners knot ! Then the shoe will feel much more stable for downhills.

    i’ve probably put around 1000+ miles into these shoes. doing daily 4.5 miles runs on very rocky and sharp mountain trails and they’ve held up nicely they just look brown inside of that bright yellow.

    • @firestarter8202
      @firestarter8202 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Then this is by far, the only athletic shoe in the world that a person could put 1000 miles on before its uppers and soles lose stability and support through material breakdown. I’ve never heard of any shoe being good after more than 600 miles. They may still be together but it’s hard to imagine they’re really doing their job.

    • @eternitygoldo9373
      @eternitygoldo9373 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@firestarter8202 what stability? the shoe cuts off before the ankle, it does a good job of helping me not slip on loose gravel when running down mountains. i have a pair of old 4.5 and those are starting to break up only after 400 miles.

      I've run a bit on the roads with them, though never more than a couple of miles at a time, when running from the front door to the trail. They feel really comfortable to be honest - probably as comfortable as something that claims to be a genuine all-terrain shoe, like a Hoka Challenger. Despite the fairly sparse spacing of the lugs, you really don't notice anything unpleasant. I try and avoid running on roads too much with them, as it will obviously wear them out faster - but from a comfort point of view, they're great and really could be sold as a multi-terrain shoe.

    Great review as always. Question, can I put in insole inserts to create some drop? I love the idea of the food shaped toe box, but I’m not sure about zero drop

    • @opusmax8171

      Look into Topo shoes ! Drop with footshaped toebox!

    • @iosifkovalenko8364

      I use the altra for walking and light jogs. It’s a lot more naturally then walking with a drop.

    • @kofuzi
      @kofuzi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      this shoe is roomy, so you might be able to put an insole (although I'm not familiar with insoles that create drop). depending on how big the insole is, you may need to size up.
      or go with a Topo. I haven't tried that brand yet, but it seems to be what you're looking for.

    Are they waterproof? If not any ideas on what’s a good foot shaped / waterproof / cold weather shoe for the streets of Chicago?

    • @O1sson
      @O1sson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The ALL-WTHR version of this shoe is waterproof in my experience; I stood in a puddle with the toebox completely submerged for probably 20 seconds and still had dry feet. It comes at the cost of the upper being stiffer; particularly a firm toe bumper in my opinion, but I am generally sensitive to that. Also the heel is just as wide as the regular LP 5 but with an internal plastic heel counter so it doesn't mould around the heel bone, hence providing a worse heel hold.
